Chapter 9: The King Who Listens

Your P.O.V.:

Everything was fine. Most if not every part of your life went back to normal when Despair's presence wasn't in it. The thing is, you felt him lingering. It was as if he was there, always reminding you to listen to the tape. To pick it up off of the chipped wooden table in your apartment, and listen to whatever sounds it had to offer. You didn't want to do that though. Knowing Despair, whatever he so desperately wanted you to hear probably had the capability to change life as you knew it within a matter of minutes.

Beep beep, beep beep.

Your phone was crying out for your attention, and you were hesitant to check whatever notification it wanted so badly for you to see.

Ugh.

You succumbed to the urge and stretched over to your coffee table to pacify its constant ringing.

Your eyes widened once you had concluded that this notification was definitely worth checking.

Incoming Call: Will <3

Thick, placid letters were displayed brightly across our screen, and you wasted no time eagerly pressing the 'answer' button.

"H-hey Will..!" You said nervously, pressing your phone against your ear with the uttermost pressure.

"Hey.." He replied a bit blandly, his breathing a bit rushed.

"Uh.. what's up..?" You said a bit less enthusiastically.

There was an awkward aura surrounding the entire conversation, as you had just gotten into a fight with him a few days ago.

"Listen, I.. I'm sorry. For all those things I said a few days ago. I believe you. I know that you still love me, and everything you said was true. I was just.. in the heat of the moment, and-"

"It's fine." You interrupted him, a relieving smile appearing on your face.

"(Y/n).. I love you. I'm sorry you've gone through so much in these past few days, and.. you even got rid of Despair for me..I-"

You cut off his sentimental speech once again with a giggle.

"Black, just shut up and come over to watch movies with me."

He chuckled in response, seemingly breathing a sigh of relief.

"Okay.. I'll be right there."

You hung up the phone happily, placing in back on your bedside table. For a moment in time, every aspect of your life wasn't out to get you.

You decided you should get dressed for the fledgling planned occasion, swiftly getting out of your bed and heading towards your bathroom.

After a quick steam-filled shower, you brushed your damp hair into a neat bun and put on a t-shirt and some sweatpants.

You set out a few snacks, and collapsed in a heap on your couch patiently awaiting Black's arrival.

Out of the corner of your eye, the tape that Despair gave you had given off a strange aura. It was if it was saying, "Go ahead, just play me.."

Your eyes squeezed shut in nervousness.

"No.. no I just won't play it!" You exclaimed, grabbing tufts of your hair.

Though, against your wishes, your hand was already reaching for the tape, your fingers barely grazing the edge of it.

Your mind was screaming "No! No! Put it down!" But your body was making its own decisions against your brain's orders.

You reached for a tape cassete, hastily inserting the tape inside. You then dug your nail roughly into the 'play' button with no hesitations.

There were a few muffled sounds and high pitched frequencies before a dainty child-like voice came flowing out.

"Despairr..! I don't think it's recording. Is it recording..?!" The young girl impatiently questioned Despair.

"Yeah.. it sure is. Are you sure you want to do this..?" His voice sounded a bit lighter and a lot less frighful.

"Yup! Hi older (Y/n)! Its me, younger (Y/n)! I'm recording this, because well... I want you to.. to believe me." What was revealed to be a younger version of yourself, had changed her deameanor to one of seriousness.

"Everyone I know doesn't believe me when I say that there are voices in my head. They think that Femt, Aligura, and worst of all, Despair don't exist. But I know they do. When mommy and daddy put me in the crazy hospital, Despair was the only one who would talk to me. He said that I was his one and only princess, and that I would one day be his queen.." Your young voice fell off for a bit, sounding a bit sparse.

Your eyebrows creased, but continued to listen on despite your increasing intuitions.

"I haven't been able to talk to Black, or even White.. I just want everyone to know that.. that I'm not crazy..! I'm normal! Even Despair could tell you that..!" The little girl in the small cassette began to sob, the near silent comforting of Despair barely audible in the background.

"So don't you forget, older me. You're normal. There's nothing wrong with you.. and please.. don't forget about the others. Don't forget about Femt and Aligura. And best of all.. don't forget my King. He's the only one left." You whimpered, before the tape cut off in an instant, the silent whirring of the tape rewinding itself filling the soundless landscape of the room.

You hadn't noticed that warm tears had drifted down your cheeks or that your knees had given out and that you were on the ground.

You gave soft hiccups here and there, carefully pushing the cassette away from you.

"...I.. I just.. I pushed him away, when he was the only one there.." You choked, your cries choked away within your throat.

Ding dong!!

Your doorbell suddenly rang, signaling that Black had arrived. You quickly wiped your tears away, and pushed the cassette away from open sight.

You opened the door to see Willaim who held an adornment of flowers in his arms and a smile gleaming upon his face.

"Hey.. are you alright? Your eyes are watering and your cheeks are red.." He questioned, walking in and setting the flowers done.

"Y-yeah I'm fine. Thanks for these.. uh.. they smell nice." You said with a faux smile and a sniffle.

Willaim sat down on your couch as you placed the flowers in a small vase.
You then turned on the movie, and turned off the lights, sitting close to Willaim.

"I missed you," Willaim whispered into your ear, as you snuggled even closer into the warmth his body gave off.

Your eyes shut tight in guilt, as your hands began to shake in anxiety.

You looked into his sky blue eyes, placing your palm against his pale cheek.

You could never tell the difference between your feelings for Despair, but there was always a hint of love. All this time you pushed him away, when really... you wanted him.

"Willaim... I missed you too, but I.. can't push him away, anymore.." You began to cry again, his near silver eyebrows creasing in confusion.

"I need my King back." You uttered those very words, and Willaim was immediately shocked. He tensed up, his teeth gritted in disapproval.

Before he could even say a word, his aquatic irises became tainted by blood, their capacity filled to the limit. For that moment, he too was crying, enveloping you in his arms and digging his head into your shoulder.
"....Thank you for keeping your promise, my queen.."
