2 February 2017 – A Month Later...

"To hurt is as human as to breathe."

Sadie's POV

It had been a month since the Log Cabin, and now I was back at university. As I left campus after a long lecture about Literature, I tried to decide whether I would be a better Literature teacher than an English teacher. I haled over a cab and waited for him to pull over; there was no way I was going to walk home in this weather.

"Afternoon, ma'am. Where to?" he asked as I closed the door behind me.

I smiled at him.

"38 Pinewood Drive, Mason's Place, please." I asked.

The cab driver nodded, changing gears and pulling out into the road. I smiled and looked out of the window as the white snow drifted downwards from the sky. It had been a long day. The cab finally pulled over to the curb and I paid the driver.

"Thanks Ray," I said, reading his name that was embroidered into his uniform.

He smiled and at me and nodded.

I wrapped my arms around myself as I made my way up to my apartment. The elevator ride up was quiet, besides the music playing softly. I unlocked my door and shuffled inside. I placed my bag and phone onto the table and walked into the kitchen, to make myself a cup of coffee. After I did that, I checked the home phone to check for any messages. My breath caught in my throat in when I found one from Connor. I immediately listening to it.

"Uh, hi Sadie. Listen, you need to get over here. It's Finely. Something happened and it doesn't look good. So, uh, please come. Bye."

I took a shaky breath and put the phone down. I rushed into the kitchen and grabbed my cell. I texted him to let him know that I was on my way and rushed to the door.

~&~

Finley wasn't in her bed when I entered their room. My eyes shot to Connor, who looked at me and tried to smile, but it faltered.

"Connor, what's happened?" I asked.

He sighed shakily and shook his head, pulling on his hair.

"She's leaving soon," he said quietly in a monotone, trying to hide his hurt.

I looked at him and ran up to him, I embraced him. He held tightly onto me and buried his head into the crook of my neck. It was dead silent, the only thing to be heard was our breathing.

"How long?" I asked, trying to stay strong for my big brother, who wasn't feeling so strong.

"A week at most," he said shakily, running a hand through his hair, for the countless time by the looks of it's messiness.

I remained silent as I looked at him, but then cupped his cheek.

"I'm not going to tell you that everything will be okay, because it won't be and you won't be." I said gently.

He looked up to me, puzzled by my words.

"Are you trying to make me feel worse?" he asked, pulling away from me.

I shook my head and gesturing for him to listen.

"But, she will be okay. She will be at peace, and isn't that what you want the most?" I asked.

He looked straight ahead of him and stayed silent. I watched as the muscle in his jaw ticked over and over again as he continued to burn holes into the wall. I had counted to 80 before he spoke up.

"Yes," he whispered, barely audible.

The door squeaked open and Dr Green walked into the room. There was no sign of Finley.

"Is she okay?" Connor called out, not thinking about greeting the doctor.

Dr Green smiled at him.

"She's alright, but she's not going to last for long." he said.

Connor turned away and pulled on his hair.

"Finley asked for you, Sadie. Would you come and see her?" Dr Green asked me.

My eyebrows creased in confusion.

"Me? Why me?" I asked, standing on my feet and slowly walking towards the doctor.

He shrugged.

"I'm not sure, she just asked for you the minute we finished with the tests." he said, gesturing we leave the room.

I nodded and looked back to Connor one last time. He was in same position as before, sitting on his bed in a slouching position and pulling on his hair like it was the only thing that kept him in control. I sighed and walked through the door.

Dr Green directed me to Finley's room, upstairs and the third door to the right. Dr Green gave me an encouraging smile before he turned and left, leaving me to walk into her room alone. I took a deep breath and tightened my grip on the door handle. I pushed open the door and froze.

Finley looked awful.

She looked lifeless, she looked dead, lying there motionless. I tried to move my legs, to walk to her, but I couldn't move. She had a nasal tube in her nose and IV's connected to her fragile body. The sight brought tears to my eyes. I felt a lump begin to form in my throat. I cleared it and blinked to get rid of the tears. Finley looked up at me and gave me a half-hearted smile.

"Hey Sads," she whispered, that being the loudest she could bare to speak.

"Hi," I said, forcing myself to move in her direction.

"Are you in any pain?" I asked her, sitting in the chair beside her bed.

She smiled and shook her head.

"No, if anything I'm the most peaceful I've been in months." I nodded and looked at her.

I felt my heart breaking for the two men that would be crushed if she died. I smiled at her and nodded my head.

"That's good. Um, you asked for me? Is there something you need?" I asked her, trying to keep my voice sounding strong and sure.

She smiled and nodded.

"There are two things I want you to do. First, I wanted to ask whether you could finish the lists of things I wanted to do before I died. I'm not going to have the chance to complete them and I want you to finish them for me, with anyone you want." she said with the most serious expression I've ever seen on her.

"Secondly, I want you to take care of Connor until he dies. I know you will, considering you are his only sister, but please make sure he knows that I'm happy. I don't want him to cry for me, I want him to smile and know that I made it. I found peace." she said.

Right then and there, I knew that the if that we were all holding onto had just turned into a when.

If she died was no longer a reality, it was now when she was going to die.

There was no going back, we were staring death in the face.

I gulped, trying to keep the tears from flowing, and nodded.

"I promise I will, I'll do anything." I said.

She smiled, tears gathering in her eyes. She looked to her hand, and then back up at me. I looked down and saw a piece of paper, folded up neatly.

"Take it, it's my bucket list." she said.

I reached for it and took it out of her hand, but instead of pulling away, she took my hand in hers. Her hand was cold in my warm one.

"Be there for Logan when I go – please." she said.

I sniffed and nodded, a tear rolling down my cheek against my will. She chuckled and shook her head.

"You'll be okay, and so will Logan and Connor. I don't want Connor to see me like this, so please just tell him I love him for me." she said, her tears now rolling down her cheeks and she didn't try to stop them.

I shook my head.

"That I can't do, because you are going to. He needs to see you, Finley, you can't keep him away from you until it's time, you can't. It'll break him beyond repair." I pleaded.

She smiled sadly.

"You can't break something that wasn't whole in the first place." she said.

I sighed and squeezed my eyes shut tightly.

"Please let him see you before you go. I can't bear seeing him walk in on you gone." I cried, not knowing how to stop this.

I was breaking for my poor brother. She looked at me and started crying as well. We both cried for a while, my with my face resting on her bed beside her body and her with her hand over her mouth to silence her sobs. When we both sobered up, she nodded.

"Okay," she said then smiled.

"I'm not dead yet. I still have a few good days, at most." she said with a giggle.

I smiled at her and chuckled.

"Yeah, and we're going to spend it together with the gang. We'll send you off in the right way." I said.

She smiled and sniffed.

"Yes," she said when my phone rang.

I broke eye contact with her and reached into my pocket. I pulled out my phone and looked at the caller ID.

It was Isaac.

I sighed and looked to Finley.

"It's Isaac," I said.

"Answer it, are you crazy?" she asked me.

I chuckled at her question. She smiled and nodded her head, biting her lip, looking like an excited little girl in a candy store. I giggled and cleared my throat before I answered the call.

"Hey," I said.

I heard a deep chuckle on the other end.

"Hey Sads, where are you?" he asked me.

I squinted at looked at Finley.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

I suddenly bit my lip, trying not to laugh as Finley started singing What Do You Mean.

"I mean, where are you? Faye, Logan and I have been waiting for you at The Pizza Hut for about half an hour now." he said.

I gasped, covering my mouth my hand.

"I'm so sorry, I got caught up in time. I'll be there in a few." I said, getting up and grabbing my bag.

"Okay, see you soon." he said and hung up.

I shoved my phone into my pocket and looked to Finley.

"Don't you dare even try to ask me for permission to go, I'm not your mother. Go!" she laughed.

I laughed and shook my head, giving her a quick hug before jogging out of the room. I ran down to Connor's room, to see him fast asleep. This emotional stuff takes a toll on a person. I smiled and sprinted down to the parking lot.

~&~

I got to The Pizza Hut in record time, for someone who ran all the way there. I panted as I walked into the restaurant. I searched all the booths for the gang and when I found them, I literally let out a relieved sigh.

Thank Goodness.

I walked toward them and collapsed into the seat next to Isaac, it being the only seat open.

"Sadie? Nice of you to join us!" Faye said sarcastically.

I chuckled and rested my head against the back of the booth.

"Did you run here?" Logan asked me, looking quite alarmed.

I shrugged and noticed that the waitress had returned with their drinks.

"3 hot chocolates and 1 coffee," she said, before placing them in front of us.

A hot chocolate was placed in front of Isaac, Logan and I, while Faye had coffee.

"And which pizzas will you be having this evening?" she asked us.

The boys ordered for the group and sent the waitress on her way.

"You're crazy, Sadie Elaine Thomas." Logan said, chuckling at me.

I smirked at him.

"Thanks," I ate a spoonful of whipped cream from the top of my drink.

Logan chuckled, but stopped once Isaac wrapped his arm around me.

"Eh, that's what we love about you, Sads." he said, looking at me.

I blushed and looked down into my lap. Isaac's arm remained slung around my shoulders for the rest of the night, and Logan remained quiet for the rest of the night. I couldn't understand why.

I mean – they're buddies, why was he so quiet all of a sudden?

After we finished our pizza, we decided it was a good idea to hit the sack.

"I'll lift you home," Isaac offered.

I kindly smiled and shook my head.

"That's okay, Logan's taking me back." I said and gave him a quick hug, trying to ignore the disappointed look on his face.

"Okay, see you soon." he said, smiled at me, then walked toward Faye, offering her a lift.

I smiled and walked toward Logan, who was already starting his car. I sprinted to his car and tapped on his window.

"Hey!" I said.

The window slowly rolled down to reveal a balding man with a tattoo covering his whole shoulder.

"Hey," he said back, his voice rough.

My eyes widened.

This wasn't Logan's car...

"Sadie?" someone asked from behind me.

I turned to see Logan standing there, his hands in his pockets. I chuckled awkwardly.

"Nice chat," I mumbled to the balding guy and rushed to Logan, grabbing his arm and dragging him away.

"That was so embarrassing!" I exclaimed, rubbing my face with my hands.

Logan chuckled and nudged me in the side.

"You'll survive, come on." he said, picking up the pace toward his car.

I jogged after him and to the passenger side. We got into the car and headed home.

"So, where were you before you met up with us?" he asked as he turned into a lonely street, a short cut since the main road was overflowing with traffic.

"I was at the hospital." I stated.

I sensed Logan stiffening beside me. I looked to him concerned, his face had hardened and his knuckles were white from gripping the wheel so tightly. He quickly switched lanes and pulled over.

This really confused me.

Why was he so effected by me being at the hospital? We both literally lived there.

We sat there in silence for a while, the only sound being our breathing and the zooming of the occasional motor vehicle speeding past. I was about to say something when Logan spoke up.

"I got a call today," he said, turning to face me.

His face held pain and grief, by that I knew enough.

"It was Dr Green, he filled me in." he said, his tone of voice somewhat bored.

I sighed through my nose and looked away.

"She has less than a week left," he said, shakily.

I nodded numbly.

"I know, I was with her today." I said.

"Finley told me not to come in today, she said she didn't want to see anyone." Logan said.

I turned to look at him. The hurt vivid on his face made my stomach drop and my heart stop. He looked like the ultimate lack of hopefulness. He looked distraught, betrayed.

"Why did she want to see you, and not me? Her brother?" he asked, his voice becoming more and more broken after each word.

I sighed and looked him in the eye.

"I don't know, Logan. But I'm sure she'll call on you soon." I said.

Logan turned away and looked straight forward, staring hopelessly. I leaned toward him and took his hand into mine.

"Look at me," I said, using two of my fingers to turn his head towards mine.

"No matter what happens, the most important thing is that she will have found peace. That's what she wants the most." I whispered.

He looked at me, tears glistening in his deep brown eyes. He sniffed and fell into my arms, his seatbelt holding him back slightly. I carefully reached over, unbuckling him and then myself.

I let Logan silently cry into my shoulder, while I played with his soft, brown hair at the base of his neck. Logan suddenly pulled me onto him, so I was sitting on his lap with my legs resting on the passenger seat.

He buried his head into the crook of my neck as I held him close to me.

"We'll be okay, Logan." I whispered in his ear.

He sniffed and pulled away, leaving a small gap between our faces.

"How can you be so sure?" he asked.

I looked at him and smiled.

"Because we have each other to hold onto." I said simply.

He looked me in the eyes, until they shifted to my lips. My breath hitched as he leaned in slightly, his eyes never leaving my lips. I surprised myself when I felt myself wanting to get closer to him, to close to gap between our lips.

Just as I felt his warm breath fanning my lips, we heard police sirens from beside the car. We pulled away from each other and looked to the police officer, who didn't look too happy. I quickly slipped off Logan's lap and back into the passenger seat. Logan rolled down the window and chuckled awkwardly.

"Evening, Officer." he said.

And that's where it got interesting...
