Kai was seated behind Hiccup on Toothless as they flew in the air. The riders were all training with their dragons, decimating rocks on cliffs with their blasts. It felt weird to Kai flying in the air without actually flying herself. But she couldn't really reveal her wings, and Hiccup was kind enough to offer a ride.
She caught sight of the twins mucking around and making statues of themselves on the cliff.
Snotlout flew over to them, a really annoyed expression on his face. "Will you guys do something that is actually important?"
Tuffnut turned to him. "What could possibly be more important than this?"
Snotlout glared at them. "I'm sick of this! If these clowns aren't gonna pull their weight-"
Ruffnut cut him off indignantly. "Hey, Boyo! Never talk to a girl about her weight!"
Tuffnut nodded. "No wonder he can't land a girlfriend. Am I right?"
Kai let out a chuckle while Hiccup sighed. "Uh, guys? Let's get all these catapults loaded before the sun goes down."
A rumble suddenly occurred, gaining everyone's attention.
Astrid furrowed her eyebrows. "What was that?"
"I don't know, but it's crumbling my eyelid," Ruffnut stated in annoyance as she stared at her statue.
All the dragons grew uneasy as the rumbling got closer.
"Something's coming towards us," Hiccup warned.
Kai narrowed her eyes, sensing it as well. "Something big."
"Let's get out of here," Hiccup said as all the riders began to retreat.
It began to get closer, and Astrid and Snotlout tried to cut their boulders to stop the threat, but the latter got caught in the mess, sending both him and Hookfang skidding to the ground.
The threat soon revealed to be a dragon, halting in front of Hookfang and Snotlout.
Hiccup's eyes widened in surprise. "The Fireworm Queen?"
The dragon was squawking grievously at the monstrous nightmare.
Fishlegs turned to Hiccup and Kai, who were flying beside him. "Hiccup, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
Hiccup nodded. "Yeah, something's off."
Kai frowned at the dragon. "She's in distress."
"What is she doing way out here, away from her island?" Fishlegs questioned.
"I'm not sure," Hiccup replied before flying down in front of the dragon, trying to calm her. "Woah, take it easy, girl. Just trying to figure out what's going on."
The Fireworm Queen screeched, gesturing towards the way she came from before turning back towards them.
"Being a dragon expert, I can tell that she wants Hookfang to follow her," Snotlout stated.
"Follow her?" Fishlegs asked. "Where? Why?"
"Maybe it has some to do with those." Kai gestured towards the scratch marks under the dragon's chin.
"Dragon hunters?" Astrid asked.
"If I had to guess," Hiccup began. "She needs help defending herself."
"And, since the Fireworm Queen and Hookfang have a history, he is the only dragon she trusts," Fishlegs added in realisation.
"Well, if she's looking for back-up, she came to the right dragon," Snotlout stated. "Those hunters want to mess with the Queen? They're gonna have to go through me and Hookfang! Come on, your highness, lead the way."
The rest of the riders trailed after Hookfang and Snotlout who followed the Fireworm Queen, soon being led to the caves.
"Uh ... you guys feel that?" Hiccup asked.
Kai furrowed her eyebrows. "Feel what?"
"I don't feel anything," Fishlegs answered.
"Why must he speak in riddles?" Tuffnut said in confusion.
"It's too calm," Hiccup stated. "No sign of any Dragon Hunters ships."
"Whatever she wants help with is in there," Snotlout said, gesturing towards the caves. "Let's go, Hookfang."
"Everyone be on alert," Hiccup warned. "We have no idea what could be waiting for us in those caves."
"Says Hiccup the Obvious," Tuffnut rolled his eyes.
Ruffnut nodded in agreement. "Sometimes I feel we're the normal ones."
They all ignored the twins. Kai grabbed on Hiccup's waist for support as they flew in the dark cave, scanning around cautiously for anything.
"No arrows, no footprints, no sign of Viggo or Ryker," Astrid listed. "I don't get it."
"She didn't do all that damage to herself," Snotlout pointed out. "So if it's not hunters, then it's something else."
"Guys, I have a sneaking suspicion we may not be alone," Fishlegs stated, gulping.
The Fireworm Queen roared and gestured ahead as Snotlout and Hookfang came to a stop. "What is it, your majesty?"
Their attention turned to a huge dark scaly dragon that was trying to scratch through the walls.
"What is that?" Astrid asked in surprise.
Kai scrunched her eyebrows and nose in slight disgust. "Ew, that looks like a weird huge slimy lizard."
"A what?" Hiccup asked in confusion.
"Nevermind."
"What are those?" Tuffnut asked Fishlegs, regarding his cards.
"These are my dragon-cards. I've been working on them for months," Fishlegs replied excitedly.
Hiccup stared at them in awe. "Fishlegs, these are incredible."
The two then began to geek out, rambling amongst one another.
"You two need a hobby," Snotlout stated, and Kai couldn't agree more.
"I knew it! It's a Cavern Crasher! I've never seen one in the flesh. Uh-huh, Mystery Class. Woah! The Cavern Crasher is a scavenging Mystery Class dragon. It's known for pushing dragons out of their homes and taking over," Fishlegs informed excitedly.
"Why would it do that?" Astrid asked.
Fishlegs shrugged. "I'm not entirely sure. Warmth, shelter, protection?"
"I find it hard to believe a dragon that big would need protection," Kai voiced.
"That's why the Queen came to us for help," Hiccup said in realisation. "She couldn't get it out of here all by herself."
"Bla bla bla! We find the culprit, now let's get to work and am-scray this agon-dray," Snotlout said, flying towards the Cavern Crasher.
Fishlegs tried to stop him. "Snotlout, I wouldn't-"
The Cavern Crasher fired a blast at Hookfang, steering them away before disappearing quickly, reappearing behind Astrid, almost catching her by surprise.
"Are there two of them?!"
"Nope, extremely fast!" Fishlegs answered. "Especially for a dragon that big."
Kai focused on the huge lizard dragon, being able to see it crawl insanely fast thanks to her enhanced eyesight, even in the slight darkness. It began to excrete green slime out of its skin which weirded her out even more.
The winged hero was the only one that saw its slime blast coming their way. She gracefully jumped off of Toothless in reflex to dodge it just in time. But the rest of the riders weren't lucky, covered with his disgusting slimy mucus from head to toe.
"Ughhh!" Displeasant groans were echoed, and Kai was really glad not to get it on her clothes.
"Kai, you okay?" Hiccup asked, surprised by her incredibly fast reflex.
Kai nodded, giving him a thumbs up. "Yeah, fine."
"Oh, no, you don't!" Snotlout grumbled as he flew towards the Cavern Crasher which secreted green slime everywhere on the ground it crawled. "What is that stuff?"
"Ew, ew," Kai grumbled under her breath as she tried to avoid all the slimy mucus on the ground and the dragon itself. "Disgusting."
Snotlout tried to fire another blast at the Cavern Crasher but hit the slime instead, causing all the slime on the ground to light up on fire, surprising everyone, especially Kai, who was on the ground and very much vulnerable to it.
But thanks to her part fire powers, it didn't seem to bother her as much. Yet, Astrid and Stormfly quickly flew to the ground in front of the winged hero in a protective manner.
"We can't get through these flames!" Astrid yelled.
Hiccup's faint voice came through. "Be careful!"
All the riders were forced on the ground and dismounted their dragons, seeing as there was no space for them to fly in the limited space and through the smoke, finding themselves being split apart from one another in the fire.
And there was no sign of the Cavern Crasher anywhere.
The cavern then began to rumble dangerously again as did the concrete roof above their heads. Kai cautiously scanned around through the flames for the huge lizard, soon catching sight of it out of the corner of her eye, heading straight towards Astrid.
Kai's eyes widened. "Astrid, look out!"
Before Astrid could react to her words, Kai was in front of her in a blink of an eye and shoved her aside in harm's way, and the blonde was certainly sure it was impossible for her to be that fast, but disregarded it in the moment, believing that the smoke was probably playing with her eyes.
The dragon then suddenly emerged through the flames and smacked Kai aside, sending her flying back into a wave of dangerous flames that no doubt would've burnt an ordinary human to crisp.
Astrid's eyes widened in horror as she scrambled to her feet. "Kai!"
Stormfly roared at the slimy lizard dragon, who disappeared once again in the raging flames, apparently changing its course to where the Fireworm Queen was, leaving the riders.
"Kai!" Astrid coughed through the flames which slowly began to die out as she tried to search for Kai, a glint of worry evident in her eyes. "Kai!"
The blonde caught sight of the dark-gold haired female, who appeared to be perfectly fine and chill, looking compleetely unbothered despite being thrown into the burning fire moments ago, no signs of any burns at all on her.
Kai found herself smirking at the blonde. "Aw, were you worried about me?"
Astrid's suspicion was temporarily substituted by her annoyance, scoffing. "Yeah, as if."
Kai's smirk only grew, and the blonde restrained herself from punching that smile off her face. "Don't worry, Astrid. I'm perfectly fine."
"Unfortunately," Astrid grumbled, ignoring her before walking away towards Stormfly, and Kai failed to catch the relief in her eyes.
The smoke soon dispersed and the riders could begin to see clearly, managing to regroup once again. The blonde reluctantly allowed Kai to ride with her on Stormfly before flying after Hiccup towards Snotlout and Hookfang.
They all lent them and the Fireworm Queen a hand in finally defeating the Cavern Crasher for good, and returning the cavern back to the fire dragon before soon making their way back to the edge.
Yet, in the back of Astrid's mind, all that she could think of was how Kai was completely fine from the fire, and her suspicions of Kai only began to grow.
