~Day of the Coronation~
[ Normal POV ]
Ever since Asriel payed the skeleton brothers a visit; claiming that he'd be taking his sister as his date, whatever gap had created itself between Frisk and Sans only grew wider as the remaining days till the coronation dwindled down to one.
Over the past two days, Sans went to his post on the lookout for humans; not that he necessarily wanted to, he just couldn't bare being in the same room as Frisk.
It wasn't worth the heartache when he knew Asriel would do anything to keep her away from him. No matter how hard Sans would fight for her love or attention, Asriel would always be her top priority. It didn't matter how much he wanted to deny it, he knew he'd have to come to terms with it sooner or later.
This is what he got for raising his expectations. Jealousy and disappointment.
He'd have to watch the two be joined at the hip all night because he wasn't brave enough to make a move on her. Although, the thought of her rejecting him was almost as bad as seeing her with another man.
. . .
Meanwhile, Frisk hadn't been coping as well as she thought she would be. Sans was avoiding her; and while she could tell he wasn't trying to make it obvious, his facade was see through. His smile looked rather forced and his eyes held some sort of vacancy. He started to look... broken.
He hadn't spoken to her since she'd been asked to the coronation by her brother, Asriel. Even Papyrus began to notice an obvious difference in Sans' behavior. Either way, she knew she needed to speak with him to resolve whatever he was concerned about. All week, he'd been right by her side, dealing with her bothersome fever. The least she could do was consult his worries.
There was still plenty of time until the coronation started; but that didn't change the fact that Sans' location was unknown to her. He could've been at his post or Waterfall or Grillby's... tracking him down was nearly impossible since he could teleport as he pleased.
Just as her hope began fade from finding her friend, the door to the skeleton brother's house and a relatively short skeleton walked through. The sight of him caused Frisk to sit up straight on their little green couch and Sans to jump in surprise.
The two stared at each other for a minute, Sans being the first to break eye contact.
He didn't need this right now... his soul was broken enough already.
As he was about to go up to his room, Frisk caught the sleeve of his jacket, causing him to stop in his tracks.
"what is it, kiddo?" Sans asked, forcing himself to act confident.
Frisk paused and bit her lip, she didn't know exactly what she wanted from him. She just wanted to hear his voice again.
"Uh...mmm... D-Do you have a date for tonight?" She asked innocently.
A pained smile fell onto the skeleton's face and he let out a low chuckle. If only she knew how much this was hurting him. Swallowing his pride, he knew he needed to answer before she got suspicious.
"afraid not. the girl i like is going with someone else." Even just saying the words made his insides burn.
As much as he didn't want to, he knew lying was the only way out of this. He despised making things troublesome for her because he knew Frisk didn't like being treated above anyone else. Things were tough enough for the kid already, but then again... being with Asriel would only draw more unwanted attention to her.
As Sans was contemplating about how Frisk would feel if Asriel were to court her, the girl's mind was racing a hundred miles per hour at what her friend has just said.'He liked someone? So all these feelings that had accumulated in her heart... were worthless? But who could ever accept another date when Sans was so great?!'
Either way, she was too late, and now Sans's heart belonged to another. Was this the point where she was just supposed to give up on him? If she didn't want to get hurt when she finally did see him with a different girl, she'd have to; whether she loved him or not.
"you feeling alright kiddo? you're not looking too good."
His calm, gentle voice shook her from her vacant state. A voice that had saved her from countless nightmares. A voice that held so much concern despite his feelings for this other girl. Concern exclusively for her.
"I-I'm fine. I just need some fresh air."
Frisk shakily stood to her feet, feeling a little nauseous from the cold she was still fighting off. Upon seeing this, Sans knew he'd be an idiot to let her go alone.
"i should come with you. it's really cold out there."
The girl wanted to think it was because he cared, but everything else was telling her that he just didn't want to get in trouble by Toriel.
Either way, it was clear that Sans wouldn't allow her to go alone. So, she just gave him a half-hearted nod and began walking out the door.
. . .
The air was filled with a thick layer of silence and tension. Neither of them spoke a word as they walked through the woods of Snowdin, afraid of how the other would respond. There was a wall between them, one that neither of them knew how to fix. It felt like constant thorns were driving themselves into the two's souls. If only they knew the yearning they shared for each other.
As Sans was about to speak up, saying that they should go return home to prepare, a small yelp and quick movement alerted his attention. Frisk had a sickly expression on her face and her body was shaking violently.
The skeleton hurriedly moved in front of her, grabbing onto her shoulders to halt her fall.
You are desperate for determination.
A/N: It wasn't intended to be a semi-cliffhanger for the next chapter, I just seriously needed to get another chapter out. There should only be a few more chapters before I finish this thing off so look forward to it! Thank you guys! <3
