Chapter Thirty-Five: Ask

“Looks like you and Lucas hit it off last night,” Jazzy giggled to her little sister who sat at the kitchen island next to me.

She pressed her lips together as she tried to fight back a blush and I resisted the urge to pinch her cheek. I didn’t know why I hesitated in meeting her, she was shy and adorable.

At first, I was bitter about her, I practically didn’t want to see her face. When I did get to know her, she was actually pretty sweet which a surprise considering Jazzy’s outgoing personality. She did say that she moved on from Drew but I knew she still harbored a tiny bit of feelings for him. The minute Drew arrived to my house, her eyes glossed with happiness.

I felt quite guilty when he didn’t greet her first. He went straight to my side before I actually pointed her out and that’s the first time he actually recognized her. To say the least, the meeting was awkward.

“T-that’s not it,” Yasmin stammered, keeping her head down.

I laughed at her expense and bit down on my toast, “So you’re leaving tomorrow?”

She nodded before speaking, “I still have my own school to worry about.”

She had found a wonderful apartment near her college over the weekend. Being the hospitable household that we are, we allowed her to stay here during her visit. My mom and dad barely gave her the time of day but she said it was alright, as long as she had a roof over her head.

“Celeste!” little footsteps sounded and from the doorway emerged Savannah.

Her brown hair was pulled into pigtails and her eyes were gleaming with joy. I could see why, we were finally taking her back home to her mother.

The doctors finally wrapped Ariel’s leg into a metal walker boot so she could now freely walk without crutches around the house. Even though I knew she would still have difficulty, she insisted that she missed her daughter too much.

I picked her up and placed her into one of the chairs. Jazzy whipped her up some pancakes which she drizzled with a ton of maple syrups and a bit of whip cream on top.

“She’s a sweetheart,” Yasmin muttered, running her fingers through Savannah’s hair, “The last time I saw her, she was just a little baby who cried at the sight of Drew.”

As middle school sweethearts, she called the dibs in seeing Savannah first. On the other, Savannah didn’t recognize her on their first official meeting. Which is pretty obvious considering she was still a baby.

I looked at Yasmin and saw the longing in her eyes. She missed Drew, it was plain as day. A part of her still liked him and I could only imagine how she felt when Drew moved away.

“Want to come with me?” I asked, “I’m dropping her at the Everett’s.”

She quickly smiled and nodded her head, “I’ll go get dressed,” she ran off as she still in her pajamas.

I turned to Jazzy who had a thoughtful look on her face. She turned off the stove and joined me on the kitchen island.

“You’re happy for her,” I stated and she nodded.

“I miss her so much,” she breathed out, looking out the doorway where Yasmin went out, “But I had to do something to supply the both of us.”

“What about your parents?”

She fiddled with her thumbs on the table and sighed, “She lives with her foster parents.”

My mouth slightly drops at her revelation. So if Yasmin lives with her foster parents then that means…

“My parents died a long time ago,” Jazzy clarified, “At eighteen, she’s leaving their care and I took the liberty of earning money for her college fund.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“You didn’t ask,” even though she meant it to be teasing, grief was present in her features.

Yasmin came skipping back into the kitchen, her hair was still wet which meant she took a quick shower.

“Ready!”

I looked at Jazzy and she gave me a small smile, “See you girls when you get home.”

I sighed and decided not press anymore questions. Savannah finished up her glass of milk and grabbed on to the hand I reached out for her.

“Say goodbye to Jazzy,” I told her.

Savannah turned to her and gave her a toothy grin, “Bye!”

Jazzy laughed and pressed a kiss onto her temple, “Be good to your mother, alright?”

“Alright,” she answered enthusiastically.

I gave Jazzy one more glance before dragging Savannah to the living and grabbed her bag of clothes on the couch.

“Want me to take that?” Yasmin offered and I handed it to her.

The drive to Drew’s house was quiet except for Savannah’s random question like why is the sky blue or why is the grass green. All of which I made Yasmin answer as I laughed while she tries to formulate for a reply.

The familiar house came into view and I pulled up at their driveway, “We’re here.”

Yasmin focused out of the windows, absorbing the sight of Everett’s house. It was her first time to see it and just like me, she was at awe with the simplicity.

“I’m home!” Savannah squealed from the backseat.

I pulled out my keys and got out. I picked up Savannah from the back along with her bag as Yasmin slowly got out of my car.

“Ariel, Drew!” I called out while ringing the doorbell.

Savannah gripped on the hem of my dress, waiting for the wooden door to swing open to reveal any of her family members.

We heard a few clicks from the other side before the door finally opened. The minute it did, Savannah lunged for her mother who welcomed her with open arms.

“Mommy,” she giggled, hugging Ariel tightly.

“I miss you,” Ariel said, kissing the top of Savannah’s head.

Nothing’s more beautiful than seeing the reunion of a mother and child.

Yasmin and I allowed the two of them have their moment and we went to the living room where Drew was currently munching on Ariel’s famous homemade cookies while watching the TV.

“Not even a hello?”

“Hi,” he lazily greeted, leaning in to take another cookie from the plate on the coffee table but I took it right from his hands and took a big bite of it.

“Hey!” he protested and I grinned, sitting next to him.

“Hey to you too,” I casually said.

Yasmin awkwardly cleared her throat as she still stood awkwardly at the side.

“Come on,” I encouraged, patting the space next to me. She slowly sat on it and I gave her a pat on the shoulder, “Better than just standing there, right?”

I offered her a cookie and she gratefully took it. She focused her eyes on the television screen just as my phone went on inside my pocket. I dug it up before answering the call and pressing the device to my ear, “Hello?”

“Hey,” Lucas’ voice greeted, “Is Yasmin with you by any chance?”

A smirk slowly crept its way onto my lips and Drew took notice of this.

Who’s on the phone? he mouthed and I shushed him up, pointing at Yasmin.

“Yeah,” I grinned. I guess inviting Yasmin to the Smith Brothers’ party wasn’t such a horrid idea. Jazzy was completely against it but I convinced her, saying it’s an essential part of being a teenager.

“Can you hand her the phone?” he asked – no, pleaded.

I held back an ‘aww’ and gave Yasmin my phone. She asked who was it but I gestured for her to answer it.

“Lucas?” Drew whispered into my ear causing shivers to travel up my spine.

“Yeah,” I croaked out.

Seeing the obvious effect he has on my, he kissed my cheek, the area near my ear.

I’m doomed.

I felt somebody poke my side and I jolted up, turning my attention to Yasmin. She handed back my phone before she stood up.

“Lucas wanted to meet me at the mall.”

“Want me to drive you?” I offered.

Her eyes snapped from me to Drew before shaking her head, “I’ll call a cab, I guess you two still have something to talk about.”

I was about to deny her but Drew wrapped an arm around my waist and smiled at her, “Have fun.”

I gave him a dry look as Yasmin sauntered off to her little date.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I groaned but I was instantly shut up by the feel of his lips on mine.

Something was up, the girls were smiling ninety-percent of the day. They kept stealing glances at me before bursting into giggles.

“Tell me what’s going on!” I pressed, I hated it when I was kept in the dark.

“Whatever do you mean, my dear Celeste?” Jessica asked which made Blake slap his forehead at his girlfriend’s antics.

I narrowed my eyes at her but her smile never faltered. We’re just boarding the line of creepy right now.

“By the way, have you guys seen Drew?” I asked them as I noticed his absence from our lunch table.

Lucas shrugged, “No idea, but…” he trailed off, searching his bag before producing up a folded note, “He wanted me to give you this.”

I took it from between his fingers and carefully unfolded it, revealing his printed handwriting.

Go to OUR classroom after prom preparations.

Looking from any hints from my friends, they averted my gaze and looked at anything but me. I sighed and stuffed the note into my pocket.

I couldn’t concentrate on anything and what made things worse, Drew was clearly avoiding me. The moment I caught his eye down the hallway, he ran to the opposite direction.

Please don’t tell me he wants to break up with me.

“You alright?” Rebecca asked, tying up a balloon as she approached me.

I blinked once, then twice, before my eyes regained focus. I plastered a smile and nodded, “Yeah.”

She let go of the balloon and allowed it float up to the ceiling, “Have you noticed anything different with Lucas lately, he’s been acting up?”

I knew the reason, it was Yasmin. The worrying look on Rebecca’s face made me tear into pieces. I wanted to tell her straight that Lucas didn’t like her that way but it wasn’t also in my position to tell.

So taking a deep breath, I lied through my teeth, “I have no idea, why don’t you talk to him?”

She frowned before plopping down on the bleachers, “That would be easy if he wasn’t avoiding me.”

Oh Lucas, you need to clear this up. Don’t follow my footsteps.

“What do you suggest?” she asked suddenly, “I mean, what do you think may be the reason why Lucas is steering clear from me?”

That would be a lot easier to answer if my own boyfriend wasn’t avoiding me.

I gave her an encouraging smile, “Just go and approach him. Corner him up if you have, you just need to clear things up.”

Her eyes gleamed in determination, “You’re right!”

I looked at the time and held back my anxiousness. It was already dark outside and it was time to make everybody go home, “Good job today, everybody! Time to head on out!” I announced.

People tidied up a few props and pieces before saying their goodbyes to each other. I waited not-so-patiently until the last person left the gym.

I grabbed my bag and quickly head upstairs to our classroom. I opened the door but when I looked around, Drew was nowhere in sight.

“Drew?” I called out, looking around the room, “Where are you?”

My phone beeped and I looked at the screen, it flashed a text from Drew.

Look out of the window

I walked to the glass window and looked out. Another thing that I loved about this room is the view from the inside. It looked over the whole football field.

But I wasn’t admiring the field, I was admiring what was put up there.

Lighted candles were positioned carefully and formed the four letter question that I was waiting to be asked.

PROM?

Squinting my eyes, I saw Drew next to the figure, waving his arms up for me to see. I grinned and ran out of the classroom to the back door leading to the field.

“Drew!” I squealed, jumping into his arms.

Oh how cliché does this look.

“So I’ll take that as I yes?” he chuckled.

“How did you do this?” I asked, looking at the candles.

“Let’s just say that your friends aren’t as horrible as I initially thought.”

I smiled as I imagined Jessica, Lillian, Annabelle, Lucas and Blake as they helped form up the message on the grassy field.

Not to brag but, I’m extremely lucky.

I leaned up to my tiptoes and pressed my lips against his, “Yes,” I pulled back for second to say it before I continued to kiss him.
