Chapter Seven: Balloon War

Chapter Seven

All eyes were currently on our table and it was so quiet that you can probably hear a pin drop. There were a few reasons why everybody’s attention was directed to our small group at the middle of the cafeteria.

First, the all and mighty Smith Brothers was seated here. Their reputation never faded even being absent for the last four years. I heard that Blake was trying out for the football team and I think nobody would be surprised if he was offered as the position of quarterback the moment he say a word to the coach.

Lucas, well, was being your usual bad boy. It was pretty obvious that girls were giving him a lustful eye since this morning and he did nothing but bask in the attention.

Second, Drew was also here in what they call as the popular table. Students barely knew the guy so it was only natural to be curious why a complete nobody sat on the table where all of the popular people sat in.

And lastly, the so called perfect role model student cussed loud enough for Mexico to hear.

Jessica shot up and glared at everybody, “Why don’t you just go back to your pathetic lives?” she snapped and the students quickly removed their attention from us once my best friend’s threat was heard.

You just got to love her.

I glanced at Drew and he looked so uncomfortable while both Blake and Lucas gave him hard stares. I shot my friends a pleading look and they nodded in understanding.

“So guys, how was Canada?” Lillian piped in to avert the Smith Brothers’ attention away from Drew and it works because both of them turned to my blonde friend. I saw Drew’s shoulders relaxed when he was aware that their eyes were no longer on him.

“It was great,” Lucas shrugged, “The Canadian girls were wild.”

“But we have a question, who’s this dork?” Blake asked, jotting a thumb over to Drew’s direction.

My eyes twitched and I had the sudden urge to go overprotective mode over Drew, “Don’t call him a dork,” I hissed.

“Loser if that what you prefer,” he corrected himself and that made my blood boil.

Before I could even snap at the guy, I felt a warm hand wrap around my wrist. I turned my head to the side and saw Drew gave me a look that was telling me to just let it go.

I couldn’t quite focus on this since I was internally panicking because he was touching me. If I was hyperventilating over my wrist imagine if he was going to hold my hand, I’ll surely faint.

When Drew let go of my wrist, my breathing slowly came back to normal.

Lucas was still sending glares to Drew and so did Blake but his were little calmer than his twin’s. Without a moment of hesitation, I shot up from my seat and pulled Drew out of his.

“We’re going,” I announced, dragging Drew along with me as I exited the cafeteria with my head held high.

“I’m still hungry, you know,” Drew said when I finally let him go. I looked back at the cafeteria doors; I didn’t want to go back there. I felt a little guilty though, I can’t allow Drew to starve because of me.

I looked down on my wrist watch and felt relief when I realized we had enough time to grab some food off campus.

“Let’s go to the nearby diner, my treat,” he seems to perk up when I suggested this and I can’t help but giggle at his reaction.

He offered drive us there using his motorcycle but I refused to go near that metal deathtrap so we ended up using my car.

We entered the diner and I was immediately invited by the smell of greasy fat foods. We sat in the booth and an elderly waiter approached, “May I take your order?”

“I’ll have a regular burger with fries and a diet coke,” I told her and she jotted is down on her notepad. She turned her attention to Drew who just lifted his eyes up from the menu.

“Double patty cheeseburger with a side of onion rings along with some fries,” he recited and I stared at him with amazement, “Plus a chocolate milkshake and a hot fudge sundae.”

The waiter only nodded as if his huge order didn’t faze her one bit, before spinning on her heel and returning to place our orders.

“Are you going to eat all of those alone?” I asked and he only smirked.

“I’m a growing boy.”

I shook my head with an amused smile etched on my lips when the waiter came back with a huge tray filled with our orders. She placed our orders on our table and Drew rubbed his hands together while licking his lips.

Boy that was attractive.

Wait, did you just call him attractive?

I stared at him as he chow down on his burger while occasionally popping some fries and onion rings in his mouth.

I guess when he said that he was hungry earlier he meant he was starving.

He was already moving on to his dessert which was the hot fudge when I only got to eat half of my burger.

“Done,” he informed after sipping the last of his milkshake. I hurriedly ate the remainder of my fries and gulped down my diet coke before shooting out of my seat.

“We’re going to be late for class if we don’t hurry,” I told him before placing some cash on the table and walked out of the diner with Drew following behind me.

The drive back to school was quiet maybe because we were both so full. I parked at my usual spot and we both got out, rushing back to the building.

“What class do you have next?” he asked as we were about part ways.

“Math,” I frowned. It wasn’t a particular hard subject for me but it doesn’t mean that it pisses me off other than that, my teacher Mrs. Brown seems to hate me. I don’t know why though, I tried my best to behave in her class and I got good grades.

The both of us said our goodbyes and I headed down to my classroom. I took my usual seat at the front and watched as students filed into the room.

When Mrs. Brown came in, I was in shock of who was trailing right behind her.

That’s right people, Lucas Smith.

Lucas quickly spotted me and a huge smirk made its way onto his lips. As Mrs. Brown quickly introduced Lucas to the whole class, I saw girls visibly swoon at the sight of him while I rolled my eyes.

“You may take a seat wherever you want,” Mrs. Brown told him quickly before turning her attention to the thick math book resting on her desk.

The girls in the class were slowly hinting to take the seat next to them or anywhere near them. Some were batting their eyelashes and a few daring ones even went to lean down to give him a good view of their cleavage.

Talk about desperate.

My annoyance grew when he plopped down on the desk next to mine and I all but glare at him while he had this evil glint in his eyes.

Yup, math is now my most hated subject.

I could barely focus on what Mrs. Brown was saying because Lucas was constantly teasing me up to the point where I almost yelled at the middle of the class.

“How come you’re a new student if you attended school yesterday?” I whispered to him.

With that smirk that I so desperately want to slap out of his face he answered me, “I ditched.”

I gave him a menacing look as he continued to frustrate me for the rest of the class.

“Miss Graham, could you please answer the equation on the board,” Mrs. Brown says snapping my attention off of Lucas.

I scanned what was written on the board and I started panicking because I wasn’t listening to her due to the one-half of the notorious Smith brothers.

I don’t want Mrs. Brown to give me more of a reason to hate me so I tried my best to think of a way to solve it. I extremely hate it when they mix letters with numbers.

“Four?” I half-asked-half-stated. She eyed skeptically but nodded.

“Correct.”

With a victorious smirk I looked back down at my notebook. Normally it would be filled with notes from the class but today, it remained empty.

I closed my notebook and tucked it in my bag just when the bell rung. Without much of a goodbye to anybody, I stood up and marched out of the classroom. Lucas called out my name but I ignored him, I don’t have the patience to deal with him any longer.

All I have to do is survive the rest of the day with the Smith brothers then I have to supervise the decorating of the gym.

“You look tired,” Drew chuckled when I dropped down on the space next to him.

“Thanks,” I said dryly before looking around the gym.

The theme to the winter formal was blue so practically everything was decorated with blue and silver. They hung pieces of cloths on the ceiling that had those theme colors and even the balloons that Drew was inflating were colored blue and silver.

“I want to get a drink,” I muttered standing up and looking at him expectantly. He also stood up and the both of us climbed down the bleachers where we were sitting on.

“The last time I let you go alone to get a drink, you got so angry at me,” Drew reminded.

I felt a little guilty though. I jumped to conclusions too quickly causing us to fight and it was all because of miss runway. Speaking of miss runway, I saw her giving me a dirty look when Drew and I got out of the gym.

“Hey Celeste.”

I gritted my teeth once I heard that voice and I turned to my side to catch a view of Blake jogging up to us.

“Hey Blake,” I replied with a sarcastically sweet voice.

“Hey…” he trailed off when he looked at Drew. I remember that the Smith brothers still doesn’t know who Drew is.

“Blake this is Drew,” I introduced.

“Nice to meet you,” Drew politely say as he stuck his hand out for Blake to shake. The blonde boy reached out and gripped his hand and Drew visibly winced which made me conclude that Blake was holding Drew’s hand too tightly.

“Moving on,” I quickly mutter before taking a hold of their wrists to separate their grips on each other, “Drew and I was just about to get a drink so bye,” I took Drew’s arms and I pulled him to the end of the hall where the vending machine was located.

“He hates me,” Drew mumbled loud enough for me to hear which caused my expressions to soften.

I want to march right back to where Blake was standing and pull his fingernails one by one and start kicking him until he apologizes to Drew.

Too harsh?

“Just ignore him and his brother,” I waved off before slotting in my money and buying an energy drink. Drew bought the same thing as me and we headed back to the gym.

“You look like you aren’t too fond of them too,” he pointed out and I nodded.

“They used to torture me when I was a kid.”

“What?!” anger flashed across his face and I started to panic. His jaw was clenched and his hands were balled up into fists so I reached out and held them in mine, prying them open.  I did my best to ignore this tingling feeling running through my body.

Remember earlier when I said that I’ll faint when we hold hands? Yeah, I’m hyperventilating inside my head right now.

Even if I was panicking inside, he visibly relaxed and I couldn’t help but smile. He opened his hands and I took my cue to retrieve my hands from his while continue to blush as we speak.

When we entered the gym, I can feel miss runway practically drilling holes on the back of my head but I Ignored her. She wasn’t worth my time.

We returned back to our spot on the bleachers and Drew proceeded to pump air back into the blue and silver balloons while I just watched around the gym.

Miss runway was standing on top of a ladder to hang the banner by the doors and she lost her footing causing her to topple over and land on top of the guy who was holding the ladder. He was laying flat on the floor while she was sitting on the back.

The moment I saw what happened, I burst into laughter while Drew gave me a weird look. I pointed at their direction before he started laughing too only a little bit calmer than me.

You just got to love karma.

After miss runway stood up with a huff and proceeded to yell at the poor guy she landed on saying he wasn’t holding the ladder steady enough, she marched out of our view while the guy seems to head out of the gym; maybe to the nurse’s office.

Half an hour later, nothing interesting was happening. I didn’t bring a book a long with me and Drew continued to inflate balloons.

How many balloons do we need?

One silver balloon rolled to my feet and I reached out to grab it. With a bored sigh I swung it to the side and hit Drew right on his arm. He stopped tying the balloon he was holding and gave me a mischievous grin.

He directed the opening of the balloon he was holding and released his tight hold of it, causing the air inside to blow right into my face.

Oh it’s on!

I hit him again with the silver balloon and Drew took a hold of a weapon of his own. We started hitting each other childishly and even popped a few ones in the process.

My hair was getting messy because of the static these rubber things have causing my hair to stand up and so was Drew’s.

People were staring at us but in all honesty, I didn’t care because this is the happiest I felt all day.
