Chapter Fourteen: Stop Glaring

Chapter Fourteen

When morning came, I was in such a chirpy mood. I brushed off the fact that I barely got an hour of sleep but I was so happy that Drew and I were talking again.

As the usual routine, Jazzy greeted me with a joyful good morning before serving me my breakfast.

“I’m guessing you finally got along with Drew again,” she teased as she handed me my coffee.

How did she know?

“Other than the fact I heard you two screaming the other day, you were practically a zombie for the past week,” she explained.

“I asked that out loud, didn’t I?” I asked and she nodded with an amused smile on her face.

“Are you mad?”

“Why in the world would I be mad?”

“Because,” I started out, “Your sister is Drew’s ex.”

She looked at me warmly before going behind my chair and hugging me from behind, “You’re like a sister to me, Celeste. You may be somewhat my boss but you’ve been more of a little sister to me than my real one was.”

“And I feel like you’re my only family,” I mumbled under my breath. I miss my parents, it’s been a long time since I last saw them in person.

“Your parents love you so much,” she reassured me.

I shrugged and started digging into my breakfast. For the first time since my fight with Drew, I finally grew an appetite. The big grin on Jazzy’s face was an indication of how pleased she was that I was finally getting some food into my system. I didn’t blame her though; I’ve lost a lot of weight in the past week.

A familiar buzz snapped our attention; it was a call from the front desk signaling that there was somebody to see us.

Jazzy pressed a button from the receiver and we were greeted by the familiar voice of the man handling the front desk, “Good Morning, Miss Graham.”

“It’s Celeste,” I corrected. That man has been working at this building for five years, and every time I told him to call me by my first name, he ignores the idea completely.

“There’s this boy named Lucas Smith who is claiming that he wants to see you,” he told me, and I internally groaned.

“I’ll be there in a few minutes,” I said to him before ending our conversation.

I gave Jazzy my goodbye before grabbing my bag and heading to the elevator. I pressed the button going to the lobby and waited patiently for the elevator to descend through the floors.

The metal doors opened, and I saw Gregory, the man who I talked to earlier, typing on his computer while talking to a guest.

“Hey Greg,” I greeted, and he returned it with a curt nod before pointing to the sitting area where Lucas was contentedly looking at the fake fireplace.

“Celeste.” He instantly jumped out of his seat when he saw me approaching.

“What are you doing here?” I asked as he reached to take my bag from me.

“I’m driving you to school.”

“I have my own car,” I deadpanned, but he ignored my statement and proceeded to walk past me with my bag in his clutches.

“Lucas!” I groaned but followed him nonetheless.

We entered the parking lot and parked there was his slick black Honda. He opened the passenger seat for me, and as much as I hated him, I couldn’t help but smile at him for he was acting like a gentleman.

Once I was inside he handed me my bag before closing my door, and went around to get inside the driver’s seat. He started the car and pulled out of the underground parking lot of my apartment complex.

The nice Lucas is totally new to me, but he’s acting so sweet that I might actually get used to this.

When we both got out of the car at the same time, the students looked at us with awe. They were like a bunch of fan-girls who were jumping around because their OTP finally got together.

“They’re staring,” I whispered to Lucas as we started walking to the school entrance.

“How could they not?” he smirked and I rolled my eyes. Same old cocky Lucas Smith.

Once we entered the school, I looked around for Drew. My stomach was still a little queasy from that mayonnaise cake that he gave me from yesterday, but I was still filled with glee by the fact we were back to being friends.

When I spotted the familiar head of brown hair, I turned to Lucas, “Thanks for the ride, see you later.”

“Wait—“he said in an attempt to stop me but I didn’t hear anything else because I made a run for Drew.

When I was close enough, I yelled, “Everett!”

Let’s just say that somebody waxed the floor because it was so slippery my shoes couldn’t stop even though my feet weren’t moving anymore.

You could only guess what’s next; I crashed into Drew and he lost his balance causing the both of us to go falling to the ground.

Thankfully, he caught my fall. Though from his groans of pain he wasn’t much of a happy camper.

“Sorry,” I muttered sheepishly.

“Just get off of me,” he breathed out, and I couldn’t help but giggle.

“Celeste!” Another voice boomed through the hallways, and the next thing I knew, I was being pulled off of Drew and into a hard chest. A pair of arms circled around my waist and held me possessively.

I blinked once, then twice before finally turning my head to see that it was Lucas, and he was glaring at Drew with jealousy.

“Smith,” Drew greeted casually as I realized that he had finally got back on his feet, and composed himself.

“Everett,” Lucas gritted out.

I squirmed in his hold before jotting my elbow to the side, effectively freeing me from his grasp.

“Lucas,” I scolded him, “Don’t you dare look at Drew like you’re about to kill him.”

Even after my words, his glare didn’t once falter. I sighed before grabbing Drew’s arm. “We’ll see you at lunch.”

I started pulling Drew away from Lucas, ignoring all the stares the students were giving us.

“He likes you,” he stated the obvious.

“I know.”

“Do you like him back?” he pressed further, making me stop in my tracks.

Well, that was a question I didn’t bother on thinking about before. I’ve known Lucas since third grade when the Smiths moved to town. He has been torturing me non-stop, which made me think about his confession. He apologized and he proved this morning that he’s willing to change just to make me see him in a different light.

He’s doing a pretty good job on convincing me, but did I harbor any feelings for him?

“I don’t know,” I replied quietly. I felt Drew stiffen, and I sighed.

I dropped my hand from his arm and looked at him, “He’s been my bully for the longest time, and I hate him for it, but he said that he’s willing to change,” I breathed out. “And he even asked me to the dance but I said no.”

“Could you promise me one thing?” Drew asked, and I nodded.

“What?”

“If you ever like him the way he wants, please tell me,” he pleaded.

Was he saying this as a friend? Does he want to protect me? The hopeful look in his eyes was the hardest thing to say no to.

“I promise.”

The bell rang which signaled the start of classes, and the end of our conversation. We bid our goodbyes before heading to our different classrooms.

The hours passed by, and my teachers even complimented me for getting my groove back. So a lot of people noticed my depression stage.

When I entered the cafeteria, there was already a long queue. I blame my History Teacher, if he didn’t continue to babble for the next ten minutes after the bell rung, I could have already been enjoying my lunch right now.

With a huff, I grabbed a tray and started my journey to the end of the line. I didn’t reach far though, because I was pulled into the middle, which meant I was cutting.

Normally, I despise the idea of cutting in line, but right now, my stomach was begging for food.

“Her majesty shouldn’t be waiting in line,” Lucas’ deep voice chuckled from behind me, making me shiver.

I ignored him and waited patiently for my turn. Lucas and I had another argument because he insisted that he pay for my food.

We both headed to our usual table where all of our friends were already seated. I noticed that Jessica and Blake were sitting next to each other, rather closer than normal. Another thing I noticed was the lack of Drew at the table.

“If you’re looking for lover boy, he’s over there,” Lillian piped, lifting one manicured nail and pointing it at the direction of the dumpsters. There he is again, sitting at his usual smelly table.

“I’ll be right back,” I said to them, placing down my tray, and making my way to where Drew is sitting.

He looked up to me and groaned, “I expected this.”

I smirked, and gestured to the direction of my table. He shook his head, and raised a brow, are we going to have this argument again?

After a long stare down, he sighed in defeat and I grinned in victory. We both headed back to my table and I plopped down on the chair next to him.

“Nice to see you again, Drew,” Annabelle smiled as she saw my grinning face.

Everything was finally back to normal. Well, except for the fact that Lucas Smith likes me.

“I can’t wait for the winter formal, can we just fast forward to Friday already?” Jessica pouted as she popped a fry into her mouth.

“Speaking of the dance…” Lucas trailed off, giving me a subtle hint but I did my best not look at him. I turned to Drew and gave him a mischievous smile.

“Remember our deal, Drew.”

“Don’t even say it,” he groaned, stuffing his face with a forkful of pasta.

“What deal?” Lucas hissed but I proceeded to ignore him.

I giggled at Drew’s response before I started to eat my salad. I could see Lucas openly glaring at Drew but the latter seems to be carelessly eating his lunch. Looking at my friends, they kept on looking from Lucas to Drew with extreme interest. Jessica, my oh-so-dramatic best friend, lifted a hand and fanned herself.

If they were feeling heavy under the tension, imagine what I’m feeling when I was in the middle of the two boys.

If Lucas keeps on glaring at Drew, he could kiss his chances with me goodbye. We have three days left before the winter formal, and if he even wants a decent reply to me, he should really stop glaring.

Drew is much more important to me.
