Yesterday was too tiring since Mr Knight was away. I had to do all his work and mine. I had to answer all the phone calls he received and I had to still run around for the monthly review. Today was a fresh day and yet I was really tired. I was looking forward to the weekend so that I could finally have some time to myself, with Vi of course.
I was sitting in my cabin waiting for my lovely boss to arrive. I couldn't believe he was late today and that too for a whole hour. His coffee was cold so I had just made him a new one. I hope he comes before even this gets cold. Suzane peeped inside my room. "He is here, not in a good mood though," she said, warning me.
His mood was never great or he was just good at hiding whatever it was. I grabbed my things and his coffee and walked into his room after knocking. "Good morning, Sir," I said, handing him the coffee.
I told him his schedule and when I finally looked at him, that's when I noticed him looking blankly at the wall. "Mr Knight?" I asked. "Yes?" he said looking at me, making me look at him in confusion. "Do you want me to repeat the schedule?" I asked. "No," he said. That was his way of saying leave so I did. I went back to my cabin and put everything back in there and grabbing my phone I went downstairs to get all my monthly sheets that were remaining.
Taking the stairs I effortlessly walked in my heels. My mom would be proud of me, the girl who spent her whole life in sneakers walking and skipping in heels was a great sign. As soon as I reached the finance department which was just two floors down from ours. Everybody greeted me. I went in to see Mr James get the sheets from him.
"Hello, Mr James, are the sheets ready?" I asked. "Hello, Isabella! Here you go dear," he said, handing me the sheets. "Is everything okay?" I asked, looking at him as he furiously typed on his computer. "Yeah... I am just... so my wife and I have our 20th anniversary and I don't know where to take her!" he said. "Can I suggest something?" I asked. "Please do!" he said.
"What was more memorable for you guys' first date or first anniversary?" I asked. "Date!" he said immediately. "Awesome! You can recreate the entire thing and probably give her a ring or something proposing again!" I said. He smiled widely. "You are such a sweetheart! Thank you so much!" he said, giving him a fatherly hug. "You're always welcome!" I said walking away. I walked downstairs to the other departments to collect the sheets and when I finally reached the last floor my phone started ringing.
Mr Knight.
I immediately picked up. "Ms Kingston? In my office, now!" he said, ending the call right to my face. I sighed, getting in the elevator and going back to the top. I walked by Suzane who gave me an apologetic smile. "Yes sir?" I asked politely. "Do you have the reports of the monthly review ready?" he asked. "It will be ready in an hour," I said. "Good, it better be and I need you to reschedule all my meetings after 5," he said. "Yes Sir. Anything else?" I asked. "Get me a coffee," he said.
I ran out to the pantry to get him a coffee and by the time it was done, I had rescheduled all his meetings. I placed the coffee on his desk and I was about to walk away when he called. "Yes Sir?" I asked. "We have a meeting this weekend," he said. Oh No! Not this SUNDAY! "Umm Saturday or Sunday Sir?" I asked. "I don't know yet. Do you have a problem?" he asked.
"No..." I said walking away. That Sunday was the Sunday which was my holiday... I hated that Sunday. It was the day I lost someone very close to me so I usually spent that day going to him. I sighed as I reached my cabin and sat down to do my work again.
By the time I was done with everything I was beyond tired and I didn't want to go home but tomorrow was a Saturday. So I smiled while packing everything up. There was a knock on my door, "Come in?" I said I was confused. "The meeting is on Sunday at 11 am," he said. Great. "Yes Sir, the venue?" I asked. "I will send it over to you when I receive it," he said. He looked like he was leaving for home. And with that, he closed the door. I grabbed all my stuff and walked out. He was waiting for his elevator which immediately came and I waited for the normal one.
He got in and left. After a minute even I got in leaving as I booked the cab. "Good Night Fred!" I said walking out of the office. He smiled and waved at me. I got into the cab heading home.
To Vi: I will come to pick you up tomorrow at 11 am. Be ready. Also, I have a meeting at 11 am on Sunday.
I immediately got a reply.
Vi: This SUNDAY? Does he not know you don't work on that day? He is very rude!
To Vi: Just be ready.
Vi: Okayyyyyyyy
I smiled going back to looking out the window.
The next day I woke up at 9! The only days I get to sleep in. Getting ready in my jeans and sweater I got out locking the door behind me. I rented a car for today so I could go pick up Vi. The drive wasn't long enough. She was at NYU which was like an hour away from where I lived. Jamming to music I reached the campus building where she lived. I parked the car and was about to call Vi when I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"You are the one!" said a boy who looked familiar. Dark hair, grey eyes, chiselled face. "I'm sorry, what?" I asked. "You work for my brother, don't you?" he asked. Huh? I don't work for anybody's brother. "I think you have the wrong person," I said when I saw Vi approaching I waved her over.
"No, I know you!" he said. "You idiot, can you leave my sister alone?" Vi snapped getting closer. "Violet Kingston." "Xavier Knight," she said, matching his tone. Wait, Xavier Knight? Nicholas had a brother? The two children were glaring at each other like they wanted to kill each other. "Okay, that's enough," I said standing between them. "Vi put your stuff in the car. And you- How do you know I work for Mr Knight?" I asked him. "I see you every year at the annual function," he said, smirking. Okay, he is his brother.
"But I don't see you! And I check the guest list," I said. "You think I need to be on the guestlist?" he asked. Okay, that made sense. "It was nice meeting you Xavier," I said, trying to go back. "You are going back to NYC right?" he asked. "Yeah..." I trailed off. "Could you drop me at my house?" he asked. "No!" Vi said. "Sure, get in," I said. He got in the back seat as Vi scowled.
"Violet, be nice," I said starting the car. "Yes Violet, listen to your sister," he smirked. "I will break your face," she threatened. "I would like to see you try, love," he smirked again. Violet just ignored him, not looking at him anymore as he smiled in victory. I just laughed it off. Idiots.
During the ride, I got to know Xavier a little bit better. I mean speaking, I got to know him a lot better than I got to know his brother in the past three years. He was also into medicine but minoring in business. Then he was the same age as Vi. He was a football player. He also told me that he and Nicholas or Nick, as he called him, spent very little time together so he wanted to go see him.
I knew Mr Knight didn't have any idea about him coming over even if he tried to tell me otherwise. I finally stopped in front of a huge mansion. According to Xavier, he lived there. Well, I wasn't doubting this. "You wanna come inside?" he asked. "No Thanks, I will pass," I said. He looked at Vi who replied with a "Just go!" he laughed and waved at us before turning around and leaving. After I knew he was safely inside I left to drive home.
Vi and I jammed to music back and then just sat eating some popcorn and binge-watching Netflix till we fell asleep. I woke early that morning not being able to sleep as I remembered all those memories of me and Grandpa. I sat there on my bed tears flowing down my cheeks as I closed my eyes.
Violet was asleep. She didn't know Grandpa that much. She wasn't old enough to remember. But I did. I sighed as I saw my phone screen light up.
Mr Knight: I will pick you up Ms Kingston be ready at 10:30
I looked at the clock to see it was 10. I got up trying to make myself look presentable. By the time it was 10:25, I was ready and even Vi was up, watching TV. "You are not staying for tomorrow. You are not missing classes," I warned her. "But!-" she protested. I walked to the door where the doorbell rang. I was in my professional attire, my hair was up in a bun and I wore my heels with my pants, shirt and blazer.
"Not, Vi." I opened the door still facing her, "I don't care. It's not a big deal anyways I am going to drop you off today!" I said. "You are heartless," she muttered as she looked past me, her eyes wide. I turned around to be met by none other than Mr Knight. "Good morning Sir," I said, giving him a small smile that was just fake. Because today I didn't want to go anywhere and he was dragging me with him.
"Are you ready Ms Kingston?" he asked, looking at me and then at Vi, who just glared at him. "Vi, after the meeting I have places to be but I will be back before 3 pm. Please have your lunch and be ready. I am not taking no for an answer," I said. She rolled her eyes. "Whatever, be safe," she said, hugging me. She knew how much this day meant to me.
"I will. Now go shower," I said she waved at Mr Knight, before going into the house and I closed the door behind me. We both walked down without any words. Even though I was used to the silence, every day I wanted to break it. But today I was glad it was there. We went downstairs and got into the car speeding off to god knows where.
Not only God but Mr Knight knew where it was. We were meeting with some Italian people for brunch. And God did I want to be anywhere but here. I stared at the food in front of me not wanting to eat anything right now. I just blankly took notes on my Ipad.
A few minutes into the meeting the client excused himself to go to the washroom and I drank some water. I turned to look at Mr Knight who was already looking at me. I raised my eyebrows but he just had the same blank expression. I turned and focused on work again.
The meeting was finally over and the clients had left, leaving me and Mr Knight alone. "Should I drop you home?" said his deep voice. "No thanks," I said when I booked the cab to go to the cemetery. He looked at me for a while before getting into his car. "Go!" I said as he drove off.
He is such a pain in the butt. I got into the cab when it arrived and drove to the cemetery I always went to. Stopping by the flower shop nearby to pick up some roses. 350 to be exact. I opened the gates and got in as I placed a rose at each of the tombstones tears flowed down my cheeks.
I miss you, Grandpa.
I opened the doors with my keys only to find Violet playing video games and she was not alone. "I didn't know you guys were friends?" I asked. "I was bored and he just bribed me with food and games," she said, not taking her eyes off the screen.
"Xavier you are welcomed here anytime but does your brother or any family member know you are here?" I asked sitting down. "Nope, and they don't need to. I am a responsible adult, Isabella," he said. "Sure... So I am dropping both of you, today?" I asked them to go into the kitchen to clear up the mess they had made.
"That would be very nice of you, thank you," he said, continuing to play. "Since when are you this nice? You are supposed to be the bad boy!" Vi said. "You believe all the rumours at college?" he said, finally looking at her. She nodded, still looking at the screen. He cringed and then just went back to the game in a different mood. I am never going to understand Knight men.
"Bella, can I please stay?" Vi asked. "Not, you have lectures tomorrow," I said as I started doing the dishes. "One to be exact!" she shouted back. "Vi, you know it is not a big deal anyways I will be fine!" I said. After a few hours, I drove them back to their college.
Coming back home it was almost 10 pm. I took a shower and went back to bed ready to get up early for a Monday morning.
I opened my closet to get ready where I found a box with a note on it.
Happy Birthday, Sis! Please wear this today and call me as soon as you are ready! You deserve to treat yourself today!
-Vi.
I smiled at the note and opened the box to find a beige skirt and black top with black stockings and black heels and a rose gold bracelet. I looked at it again... Should I wear this? I mean... It's not promiscuous... So, I guess. I started dressing up and then looked at myself in the mirror. I felt different, But a good difference. I put on some makeup, putting in a little more effort this time. Before giving Vi, a video call.
It was 6:15 and I was doubtful of her answering but she did. I looked at her in bed, squinting her eyes. "You look gorgeous! Happy Birthday," she said, smiling at me. "Now please don't put your hair up in a regular bun. You have been doing it for three years! Please let your hair down!" she said.
"Not! Thank you for all this but I give you an allowance to spend on yourself and not me," I said. "Bye! Please let your hair down and send me a pick!" she said, ending the call. I laughed. I looked at myself before finally giving in and leaving my hair in my natural waves and styling my bangs with the straightener a little.
After eating my breakfast and getting everything ready. I got into the lift and rushed downstairs. I was ready but I was in a hurry. I walked into Starbucks to pick up the coffee. "Good morning, Alex!" I said smiling. "Woah! Wow, you look...Wow!" he stammered. "Thank you so much! But I am running late," I said, leaving the money and grabbing the coffee.
I hurried the driver and we were finally on time. I walked in greeting Fred and he smiled at me. "Good morning, Maria!" I said to her, "Wow, Isabella!" she said, giving me a thumbs up before she straightened up. "Good morning Sir," she said. I immediately turned around to find Mr Knight walking towards me. I smiled at him handing him his coffee.
"Good morning, Sir," I said. He looked at me once then closed his eyes and opened them again to look at me. I raised my eyebrows before walking to the lift. I started receiving texts and so I just put my phone on silent. I looked at the private elevator to find a 'CLOSED' sign on it. I turned around to find Mr Knight standing behind me. I gulped and turned around again.
"Is there something wrong today, Ms Kingston?" Mr Knight asked. "What? No?" I said. "Then something special?" he asked. I looked at him, is he seriously asking about me? "No, Sir," I said as he nodded. Getting into the elevator a few other people walked in including Mr James and Suzane.
"Good morning Mr James, Suzane," I said smiling at them and they smiled, greeting me in return. "Wow, Isabella you look different, a beautiful different," Mrs Suzane said. I smiled at her in return. "Agreed," Mr James said. "How was the anniversary?" I asked him. "Oh, she loved it! Thank you so much for the idea! It worked, she had tears!" he said, smiling widely. "I am glad. And how are the little munchkins, Mrs Suzane?" I asked, referring to her grandkids who came to her on the weekend. "They are great! They miss you though!" she smiled. "I would stop by this weekend then," I smiled.
The elevator fell silent again until a voice spoke up that I didn't even notice was in there. "Isabella?" I turned around to come face-to-face with Eric. Oh Great. So Eric Matthews. He was in the financial department and let's just say he had a crush on me. He had made it very... um... obvious. "Hi Eric," I said, trying to smile. "You look wow!" he said. I smiled at him before turning around and frowning rubbing my temples.
"Would you like to go out today?" he asked. How many times do I have to politely decline him? The elevator opened and I was happy it was his floor. But before I could answer a voice spoke that had been silent all this while. "I pay you to work here Mr Matthews, not flirt with people, get out, this is your floor," Mr Knight snapped. All eyes turned to him wide, but I tried not to laugh. Eric left the elevator dejected.
Mrs Suzane let out a laugh. "How many times has he asked you out and you have declined?" she asked. "Too many," I said, frowning. "You should get a boyfriend," Mr James' suggestion snapped my eyes to him. "Sorry, what?" I asked. "You haven't had any boyfriends for your entire life, I presume? I mean not in the last few years I have known you," he said. "Yeah?" I said more like a question not understanding anything going on right now.
"Leave her alone James! Poor girl," she said as the elevator dinged on their floor. "Oh and Isabella?" I looked up when Mrs Suzane called standing outside the lift. "Happy Birthday," she smiled as the lift door closed leaving me alone with Mr Mysterious.
