"Bex?" Nick said, smiling and getting up. She hugged him. Bex? Kevin did the same. "Rebecca! It's been such a long time!" Kevin said. "I know you guys drifted away from the group after college. I haven't seen you since forever!" she said. She then looked at all of us smiling gently and waving. I immediately stood up out of respect.
Always stand up when the other person does. Basic manners. "Oh right this is Isabella, a very good friend of mine, this is Xavier, Nick's brother and Violet Isabella's sister and Xavier's friend," Kevin introduced. She gave us those air-cheek kisses.
"Brother? I didn't know you had one!" she said, smiling at Mr Knight. Xavier just rolled his eyes to which I glared at him to behave. "Yeah you never talked about family," she said smiling. "How are you?" Mr. Knight asked, giving her a small smile. I was shocked to see him talking so nicely with someone.
"I have been good," she said, smiling back. "Guys, this is Rebecca, she is a fashion designer and a former model," Kevin said. Okay. Wow. "It's nice to meet you, Also Nick we need to catch up!" she said. "Of course," he replied. "Tomorrow at lunch?" she asked. "Sure," he smiled. "It's a date. I'll see you tomorrow. It was nice to see you, Izzie. Bye!" she said, hugging Mr. Knight again and waving at us. I stood there shocked. What?
We all sat down. "Izzie? Really?" Vi snapped. "It's okay," I said trying to smile at her but she gave me a look that said 'Keep your fake smile to yourself'. "She is a bit of a handful," Mr Knight said. I looked at him as he defended her. Why did it feel weird seeing him talking like that? He smiled. "Wow Nick, your charm works for everyone," Kevin laughed. "Not on Bella," Xavier said, finally breaking his silence.
My phone started vibrating and I looked at the caller id. "I am sorry I have to take this," I said, getting up and walking out without waiting for an answer. "Hi Dad," I smiled. "How are you doing darling?" he asked. "I am great. How are you and mom?" I asked. "We are doing good. I hope you are happy, my child," he said. "I am a dad. Is everything okay?" I asked if his voice sounded so low.
"Yes. I just miss you. Can't you come back home?" he asked. "I miss you too Dad. I will on Christmas," I said. "I am waiting for that darling. Be safe. And please keep calling your old parents," he laughed. "I will," I smiled. "Take care of yourself and your sister," he said. "I will, bye dad, I will call you soon," I said. "Good night," he said. I did too and hung up walking back in. Everyone was ordering and I sat back down. "Madame?" the waiter said in french. "j'aurai un pain aux pâtes et à l'ail," I said, closing the menu and handing it back to the shocked waiter. (I will have Pasta and garlic bread)
Everyone looked at me shocked. "What? I grew up in England. You didn't expect me to know just one language," I said. "You just spoke like Nick," Xavier said. I knew Mr. Knight knew other languages. I just shrugged. "So what's up with your lives," I asked Xavier and Violet sitting back in my chair. They both started talking about their school and friends while Kevin and Mr Knight just talked about business.
The food was served and we ate as everyone talked. "You think Bex fits the description of my perfect lady?" Mr Knight asked his voice low so others couldn't hear. I didn't want to talk about her. I don't know why but I just didn't. "I think so," I said without looking at him. "I don't know, I never felt attracted towards her. She was always a good friend," he said. Why are you telling me this?
"Well, you should make that clear to her. I mean leading women on, is not a good thing," I said quickly covering up how rude it sounded. He looked at me for a moment and nodded. I finished my food and wiped my mouth. "You know you eat like a very fancy woman?" Xavier said, looking at me. "Really?" I asked, chuckling. "Yeah, I know right? She is always wearing those high heels and has the perfect outfit, she is very -umm- elegant," Vi said, stuffing her face with fries. "And you are not, Eat like a human, Vi," I said. She just rolled her eyes and Xavier smiled looking at her.
I looked to my side to see Mr. Knight looking at me very curiously. I raised my eyebrows, mouthing a 'what' to him. He shook his head going back to eating. After eating some dessert, I pulled my card out when Mr Knight did his. It was out of instinct to pay. "I think I have enough to pay for everyone," he said. "I am sorry I didn't mean to offend you. It's just a habit," I said, putting it back in.
"You always pay?" he asked. "Yeah?" I said I was confused. He nodded. We all got up. "You both are going back?" I asked. "Yeah," Vi said, yawning a little. "I ate a lot," she mumbled. "You think?" Xavier asked. She hit him with her arms but he just wrapped it around her shoulder. Cute. "Okay, drive safe and text me when you get to your rooms," I said. "She will probably sleep on the way home," Xavier chuckled. "No funny business, drop her to her room," Mr Knight warned. "I know what to do with my best friend," Xavier snapped as they both hugged me and waved at Kevin and Mr Knight.
"Peace out Virgins," Kevin said but Mr Knight pulled him back with his collar. "What the fuck did you just say?" Mr Knight snapped. "Sorry, that came out wrong. Peace out boring people," he said. "Just leave," he snapped. "Bye," I chuckled, hugging him. He smiled as the valet brought in his car. Mr Knight's car came in soon after and we both got in. I closed my eyes after the car started.
"Clear my lunch tomorrow," he said. "hmm," I replied. My eyes felt heavy as I closed them, drifting off to sleep. "I don't know what to do!" I heard a whisper. "You woke me up for this? Nick, you are strong, she is light, be a man and pick her the fuck up and drop her at her apartment," I heard another voice. I stirred rubbing my eyes and opening them to come face to face with Mr Knight. Close. Very Close.
Very very close. I pressed myself away from him. "Umm. Ms Kingston, we are at your apartment," he said ending the call. I came back to my senses. "Yeah, right," I said, getting up as he moved away from the door letting me out. "Was that Kevin you called?" I asked. "I didn't know what to do. You were sleeping so peacefully and I didn't think you would approve of me touching you," he said.
"Right. But we are friends, Mr. Knight, I wouldn't have minded anyway," I smiled. He looked taken aback. "It's okay," I smiled. "Good night," I said. "Good night," he muttered, still confused. I wanted to say I didn't know why I said that to him. But then that would be a lie.
I knew why I didn't mind anything he did. I had a crush on Mr Knight.
The next day was going by just fine until a knock on my door interrupted me. "Hi! Izzie?" I looked up from my files to see a very beautiful-looking Rebecca standing there. "The receptionist said you would know where Nick is?" she said, confused.
"Of course Ms Rebecca, Please," I said, getting up and guiding her. "You work for him?" she asked. "I am his assistant," I said. "Oh you guys seemed like good friends," she smiled back. "Not exactly," I said, trying to be nice. It was not her fault. She was super nice.
I opened the door and walked in. "Ms Kingston I am very busy and I don't have any time," he said. "Umm, Mr. Knight?" I said. "Isabe-" he looked up. "Hi Nick, Is it the wrong time?" she smiled. "Absolutely not," he said, asking her to come in as he hugged her. "Ms. Kingston, two coffees, please. Mine is regular and she would have a hot coffee with milk and two cubes of sugar," he said. I was shocked. "You remember?" she laughed. "Yes, sir, Clear the schedule?" I asked. "You should know better," he said as he looked at Rebecca.
Wow. That was rude. I walked out before I could feel bad. I walked into my room and called the cafeteria. "Please send two coffees to Mr Knight's cabin. One Black coffee with no sugar and no milk and the other hot coffee with milk and two cubes of sugar," I said. I was not making one. I sat down clearing the schedule. There was a knock on my door. "Not in my room go into his," I snapped.
"I didn't know you were bossy." I looked up to find Ryder Christino standing there. "Who let you in?" I was ready to call the security. "Do you think the receptionist will stop me?" he asked. "What do you want?" I asked. "A meeting," he snapped. "Fine. In three months," I said, writing it down in my book. "I want it today," he said. "He is busy for the next three months," I said. "You will regret this Ms Kingston," he snapped. "I don't think so," I snapped back calling the security.
"Hi this is Isabella speaking, could you plea-" the call ended. "I am leaving now, you both better watch your back," he said walking out. Asshole.
I sighed and went back to work.
It was almost 7 and I packed my stuff and was about to walk out when I found Mr Knight still working. I walked into his room to tell him he had nothing for the day when I found him laughing with Rebecca. She was still here? "Oh, I am sorry I didn't know... Umm... I am leaving for today, Mr Knight. Have a good night you two," I said. "Good night Izzie," she smiled. I gave her a small smile before looking at Mr Knight who didn't even acknowledge me.
I closed the door. Why did I have to? I am jealous for no reason. This stupid crush. I groaned before going downstairs. I stumbled upon Xavier, "What are you doing here?" I asked. "I need to see Nicholas," He said hurriedly. "He is in his cabin but he is busy," I rolled my eyes. "What?" he asked. "Just go," I said and he nodded.
I had successfully avoided Mr. Knight for an entire week. I was very proud to say I wouldn't be affected by him anymore. Whenever I had to do something with him I would just make sure not to make eye contact. He didn't mind either so it was a win-win. "Clear my lunch schedule," he said, bringing me out of my thoughts, and for the first time in one week, I looked up at him. "Yes sir," I obliged like always. "Book a table for two in the most beautiful restaurant," he said.
Did I forget to mention Rebecca was a frequent visitor? Yups. It made things a whole lot better for me. Not! "Yes, Mr. Knight," I replied, trying not to sound arrogant. He walked out of the room without saying anything. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. I put my head in my hands.
Can I not get out of this? I sighed. My phone rang and it was Vi. "Hi," I said. "What's wrong?" she asked. "Nothing, what's up?" I asked. "Can we go to Disney World next weekend?" she asked. "What?" I asked. "Please! We didn't celebrate your birthday and my birthday is coming up!" she said. She was right, her birthday was coming up.
"But to Florida?" I asked. "Please!" she begged. "Fine, I'll book the tickets and hotel," I said, giving in. "Thank you thank you Thank you! I love you!" she smiled. "Three tickets?" I asked. "For who?" she asked. "You don't want to bring in Xavier?" I asked. "No!" she shouted. "You don't want your best friend celebrating your birthday with you?" I asked. "She is not letting me come!" I heard his voice. "Fine!" she said. I smiled. "Be here on Friday night next week," I said. They both agreed and I smiled ending the call.
After doing the bookings I sent it over to them. Getting back to work.
"Mr Knight?" I said when I bumped into Xavier's father walking out of the elevator. I was going out for a late lunch. "Hello, Isabella! It's so good to see you!" he said, hugging me.
"Please let me help you!" I said, guiding him to the elevator as people around greeted him with respect. "Good to see people still know I used to be the CEO," he laughed walking to the personal elevator. "Sir, Mr. Knight is not in the office," I said as we got down on our floor. "Oh No! I am here to see you!" he said. "Me?" I asked. "Thank you! He is a little bit happy nowadays. He comes home early and I heard he goes out for lunch and he is enjoying his life," he said.
"Ohh, I would like to take credit for that but I am not the person who is doing that," I said as he sat down in Mr Knight's chair. "What? But - I thought he was dating someone," Mr Knight said. My face almost fell. Almost. I cleared my throat before speaking. "Umm-Yes that would be Ms Rebecca Gomez," I said trying to smile.
"He is dating her? I thought he was dating-... Never mind," he said. "So where is he?" he asked. "On a date I presume? I don't know everything about him anymore," I said disappointed. "You don't sound too happy," he asked. " I know I should be happy that he has taken my advice on living life and trying to find love. But now I have to do his work," I chuckled, almost catching how I split with his father whom I liked.
"Is that it, Isabella?" he asked. "Yes?" I said trying to lie smoothly. "Very well...Are all these documents pending from his side?" he asked looking at the huge pile. "Umm no... That's my work. He was supposed to hand it to me, he must have forgotten," I said trying to cover up. "You are not a very good liar Isabella," he chuckled. The door opened and we heard giggles.
"Dad?" Mr Knight said and I immediately stood up. "Hello Mr Knight, I am Rebecca Gomez," she said, putting her hand forward and smiling at him. He shook her hand and smiled politely and looked at Mr Nicholas Knight. "I like you are trying to be social for once but at the cost of our company Nick?" he asked sternly getting up.
"What are you doing here Dad?" he asked, shocked. "That's not the point," he said to him. Mr. Knight looked at me accusingly. "I think I am going to leave," I said but his father stopped me. "No, as his PA you are supposed to make sure the work is on track Isabella," he said, scolding me. I stood there my head falling in shame.
"I think I have taken too much of your time Nick. I will see you soon babe. Please don't abandon your work for me. Your company is your passion and dream. Call me only when you are done with work," she said, kissing his cheek. "It was nice to meet you Mr Knight, Sorry for your workload Izzie," she said, giving me a brief hug and leaving the room.
"Dad, you just shooed away my girlfriend!" he said. "Girlfriend?" I put my hand on my mouth. That was not supposed to come out loud. This is why I hate talking to myself. "Do you have a problem with it, Ms Kingston?" he asked. "Sorry Sir," I said looking down trying not to let the dagger in my heart show its effect in my eyes.
"To think my friend would snitch on me," Mr Knight snapped. "Oh, you think of me as your friend? Where was your friendship when you didn't care about how you treated me like trash for the past few weeks?" I asked. "Shut up, you ignored me and I had Rebecca to be there for me. I didn't need you," he snapped. "Right, you replaced me," I said in a mere whisper and looked down as my eyes started pooling with tears.
"She is not at fault. I don't believe it, you would go with some rich snobby brat!" Robert said. "She is a very sweet, kind, and caring person!" Nick said raising his voice. "Don't you dare raise your voice at me!" His father shouted. "I WI-" "Nicholas?" I said standing in front of him, coming between him and Robert, letting him look into my eyes that were about to tear up because of his little girlfriend's stunt.
"He is your father, don't," I said. "Blood relationships are always thicker than the mere once you name for a small time. She might be your girlfriend but he is your father. You love him more than her. Don't," I said. His eyes looked into mine as his gaze softened."Isabella-" "Please apologize to him. I am taking all your work," I said, picking up the huge pile and walking out without sparing him a glance.
I walked out letting the tears fall. I hadn't cried because of someone in so long. Now I know why it is so hard to like someone.
