Chapter Five
“You look beautiful Rowan.”
“Thank you. You look so handsome.”
He smiled and took my hand.
“Ready to go?”
“Ready when you are.”
He smiled and we walked out to the garage.
“What are we taking tonight?”
“My land rover.”
“Sounds like a plan. I didn’t want to have to get into my jeep in these heels.”
He laughed as he helped me into the car. We pulled out of his driveway and headed into town. We talked for a while, and then just enjoyed the quiet. He held my hand while we drove, and I couldn’t help but smile. He had made me so happy over the past weeks that I wondered if it was a dream at times.
We stopped at a light, and he leaned over to kiss me, but his seat belt locked up on him.
“Dang it.”
I laughed.
“Just fix it.”
He sighed and took off his seatbelt, and at the time the light was still red. I was about to say something, when a vehicle hit the back of our car, extremely hard causing me to go forward and hitting the dash while Jeremy went through the windshield. I screamed, and quickly undid my seatbelt, despite the blood coming from the gash on my forehead. I quickly got out of the car, and ran to where Jeremy was lying on the pavement in front of the car. I called 911, and checked for his vitals. They were weak but there.
“Jeremy baby please stay with me.”
I held onto him, and several people came around to check on us. The driver from the truck was completely buzzed, and he didn’t know what he had just done. The paramedics arrived about five minutes later, and they immediately took Jeremy. I tried to go with him, but they wouldn’t allow it.
“He’s my boyfriend. Let me go with him!”
“Mam, you need to come with us in the other ambulance. Your wounds need to be treated, and you can join him at the hospital.”
“Fine.”
I allowed the man to help me into the ambulance, and I let them bandage the gash on my forehead, and the cuts from glass on my arms. They gave me a once over at the hospital and then they told me I was good to go. Jeremy on the other hand was still being patched up. He had a broken collarbone, and a lot of cuts and bruises, and most likely a concussion. I sat in the waiting room, and called Scarlett.
“Rowan, where are you two? Chris and I were going to surprise you guys.”
I started crying.
“Scarlett, can you come down to the hospital?”
“Rowan, what happened?”
“Someone hit us at a stop light, and Jeremy had his seat belt off because it jammed up and he went through the windshield.”
“Oh my gosh, honey we will be right there.”
“Thanks Scarlett.”
Less than ten minutes later Chris and Scarlett came through the doors. I stood up and they rushed over.
“Hun, where is Jeremy?”
“The doctor is still with him.”
Scarlett pulled me into a hug.
“He’ll be okay.”
Chris nodded.
“If there is anything we can do just let us know.”
“Thanks Chris. Could you go see if you can find out anything about Jeremy? They don’t want to tell me anything, about how he is doing other than his injuries.”
“Of course, I will be right back.”
Chris went to go see what he could find out while Scarlett sat me down, and cleaned up my running make up.
“Are you okay Rowan?”
“Yeah, just a little beat up, but I’m more worried about Jeremy than anything.”
“What are his injuries?”
“Broken collarbone, a lot of cuts and most likely a concussion.”
Her face fell as she finished cleaning up my face.
“I’m sorry Rowan. You don’t need to go through this again.”
Chris came over a few minutes later and knelt next to us.
“You can go see Jeremy now. He’s in room 1245.”
“Thank you Chris. Will you two go up with me?”
“Of course we will.”
The three of us went up to the right floor and I found his room. Chris and Scarlett said they would wait outside for me. I walked in and Jeremy was still asleep. I sat by his bed, and slipped my hand into his. I sat waiting for him to wake up, and a few hours later I saw his eyes flutter open.
“Jeremy?”
He looked over at me and he had a blank look on his face. I let go of his hand.
“Jeremy are you alright?”
“I think so, but who are you?”
“Jeremy, I’m Rowan. Your girlfriend, don’t you remember me?”
“No, I wish I did. I’m sorry.”
“I trained you for a military role, you asked me out when you found I had a panic attack. You wake up with me when I have nightmares, and you took me to a movie premiere.”
“I remember meeting you, and a few things, but I don’t remember much.”
“I promise you I will help you remember.”
“I want to remember you.”
“Will you excuse me for a moment.”
I quickly left the room, and saw Chris and Scarlett. I was crying before I had even left the room.
“What’s wrong?”
“He doesn’t remember me. He only remembers the training and nothing else.”
Scarlett pulled me into a hug.
“Chris go and see if he remembers you. I’m going to talk with Rowan.”
He left and did as she asked while she tried to calm me down.
“Scarlett, you should have seen it. He didn’t know who I was, and he doesn’t remember what we had only last night.”
The tears poured down my cheeks. I had basically lost the only man who understood me, since I had lost Jesse.
“Honey, he’ll remember you. Just give him time. Treat him like you always did, but just take things easy.”
“I’ll try, Scarlett. I guess it looks like I will be moving in with Jeremy for a while.”
“Are you sure you don’t just want him to stay at your place?”
“I’m worried he won’t be able to remember as much. I think his house will be better.”
“Alright, and if you even need some help or company just call me. I can be there within ten minutes.”
“Thanks Scarlett.”
She comforted me the best she could before Chris came back.
“He remembered me. Not as much as I would have likened but he knew my name, and other things.”
“Did he have anything to say about me?”
“He asked me about you. And he said he wished he remembered. Go talk with him again. He wants to know you.”
“I’m not sure…”
“Just go see him again Rowan. Scarlett and I will wait to take you back home. You need to change.”
“Thanks Chris. I’ll just be a minute.”
He nodded as I walked back to Jeremy’s room. I walked in closing the door quietly.
“Jeremy?”
He looked over at me and smiled.
“Rowan, I’m sorry I don’t remember everything.”
I walked over to the bed and sat down by his side.
“Babe, it’s alright. I want to help you, and I want you to remember so I’ll do anything.”
“Anything?”
“Within my own limits, but yes.”
He slipped his hand into mine.
“You’re beautiful Rowan.”
“Thank you Jeremy.”
I leaned down to kiss him, and what was intended to be a quick kiss turned into something a little longer.
“Whoa…”
I smiled at Jeremy.
“That’s what you are missing Jeremy. But there is more where that came from.”
“I’m looking forward to it.”
“I need to go home, and change. I’ll be back later, and I can stay here if you want me to.”
“Do whatever you need to. Just promise you’ll be here when I get up in the morning.”
“I will, and that’s a promise.”
“Alright. I’ll see you later.”
I gave him one last kiss before leaving the room. Chris and Scarlett were waiting for me.
“How did things go?”
“Better than the first time. I’m going to come back in the morning.”
“Okay. Do you want me to stay with you tonight?”
“If it isn’t too much trouble Scarlett.”
“No trouble at all.”
Chris dropped the two of us off at my house, and of course my chef had a meal all ready. I changed then ate with Scarlett.
“I don’t think I’m going to sleep tonight, but I have one of the guest rooms made up for you.”
“Rowan, if you’re not sleeping then neither am I. I’ll keep you company, and we can watch movies all night if you want to.”
I smiled as I placed my fork on my plate.
“That’d be great. I haven’t done that in years.”
“How long were you over seas?”
“A total of four years. Three tours of duty.”
“Wow, what was your reason for joining the army?”
“I haven’t been too close to my parents lately and I decided to join the army and I excelled in everything very quickly.”
“What did your parents think?”
“At first they weren’t too happy, but it turned out to bring us closer together.”
“Well I guess the army wasn’t such a bad thing.”
“No it wasn’t. But everything comes with a price. I lost my best friend, and several friends other. War is no game, like they make it out to be in some movies and video games. It’s awful, and cruel.”
She nodded and helped me take the dishes into the kitchen.
“I know action movies aren’t your thing.”
I laughed and set my dishes down.
“You would never believe how much I loved them before I left for the army. They were mainly the only movies I would watch.”
“Really?”
“Really. I own all the marvel movies, and all the mission impossible movies.”
She laughed as we walked into my large living room, and I let Apollo in. He was over joyed to see me, and he immediately went to Scarlett.
“What’s his name?”
She sat down and petted him.
“That’s Apollo. He’s my service dog.”
“He’s beautiful.”
“Thanks, but you haven’t seen everything.”
“Oh really?”
I nodded.
“Apollo, go get Jay.”
He ran out of the room, and a few moments later, my female poodle came running in with Apollo.
“Rowan, she is gorgeous!”
She was a black poodle with the classic haircut, but she followed Apollo everywhere.
“Thank you. This is Jay, and she and Apollo have been raised and trained together. She follows him everywhere.”
“She is beautiful.”
“Thanks, now lets watch a movie.”
