11- "There She Is."

Riley's POV

I scream in her face as I watch Bethany fall to her knees in front of me. Her screams and cries for help are deafening, and I try to hold back tears as she slowly collapses to the ground. Her knees give out, and she lies flat on her stomach with her right hand stretched out, and her left underneath her. She twitches once or twice, then lies motionless. I stare at her until I finally decide that she's not conscious anymore.

I look up and take a shaky breath. Maya looks at me with wide, thankful eyes. A soft smile grows, yet she can't hide the fear that she had felt moments ago. Lucas' cheeks are stained with tears, and he lets out a shaky breath when I meet his gaze. Farkle looks terrified, and he doesn't even try to hide it.

I wave my hands around and use my magic to undo the cage that they're in. At first, they all just stand there. Then, Lucas takes huge steps towards me. He pauses in front of me, and a smile grows on his face. He picks me up by my waist and twirls me around.

"Riles!"

I let out a soft laugh as he sets me down. He hugs me, tighter than ever before. I can feel his tears on my back, and I'm sure that he can feel mine, too. Maya and Farkle join us.

"Peaches! You gave us all heart attacks! I almost died!" Maya says.

"Oh, you almost died?" I say, chuckling.

"Riley, always let us help you, even when you think that we don't need it. Okay?" Farkle says. I nod my head. "Good." he smirks.

We hug for another five minutes before deciding to walk back to our dorms. We talk about my party, and Lucas and I's engagement. About half way there, I stop mid-sentence.

"Wait - so am I light, or am I dark?" I ask Maya. Her eyes widen for a millisecond, yet she realizes it and fixes it.

"That's the thing, Peaches. You're...both." she answers.

"Both what?" I ask, completely clueless.

"You're both light and dark." she fidgets with her fingers as she looks down.

"Uh, what does that mean?" I ask, my voice shaking.

"It means that your heart is made of gold, yet your soul is almost always ice. You can't choose one, and one can't choose you. You'll always have a little of both in you. We witches call you guys 'Travelers' because you're going to travel back and forth from both the dark and light section. So, you're a traveler." Maya explains.

"Wow." I breathe.

"Your eyes are also different colors. Your left eye is a dark green, and you're right is a glowing gold. It's what separates your two personalities. Good and bad. Light and dark." Maya adds.

"So, I could turn dark at anytime, anywhere? And I really wouldn't know what I'm doing?" I ask, confused. Maya slowly nods. "Well, shit. There goes my life." I exclaim sarcastically throwing my hands in the air. Everyone laughs.

"But, in all seriousness, when will I go 'dark'?" I ask.

Maya looks up for a minute as if she was thinking. "I'm not sure. I guess it just depends on what happens in life." she shrugs.

I guess that I didn't hide the fact the I'm terrified very well because she adds, "But, no matter what, we'll always stay by your side, Riles." she smirks while linking her arm through mine. I return a soft but believable smile.

The four of us walk side by side back to our dorms, silently promising that what just happened, will never be mentioned again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I silently open the door to my dorm, and slip inside, locking the door behind me. Maya follows, and flops down on her bed. I do the same.

"Today was a long day." I say, breathing heavily, trying to relax myself. Maya doesn't respond, but I know that she nodded her head.

I decide to shower in the morning, so that I can get a least some sleep tonight. I quickly take off my outfit, and throw on a pink tank top and grey sweatpants. I pull my hair up into a messy bun and take off my makeup. Then, I sigh as I lay down slowly in bed. I smile a little before I completely drift off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This isn't the end, Riley."

I stand in complete darkness, slowly being consumed by my thoughts. What the hell is this? Who said that? Where am I?

"You thought that you could get rid of me by just using words? Honey, that can't hurt you at all."

Who's saying these things?

"You better watch your back, Matthews. I'm coming for you."

The darkness finally surrounds me enough that I can't breathe. I gasp for air, but no one is there to help me. The last things I see are my eyelids slowly fluttering shut, leaving me in the darkness forever.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I shoot up out of my bed with sweat beading down the side of my face. My breathing is rapid and quick. I look at the clock; 4 : 32. I sigh, and slowly lay back down. It was only a dream.

But what was it about? Who was talking to me? Maybe I should ask Maya about it. Wait, but how would she react? Would she freak out? Maybe I should just keep this to myself.

My thoughts fill my mind for hours, and before I know it, the sun is up and shining beams through the blinds of my window. I sit up and groan, rubbing my forehead which was throbbing with pain, most likely from my lack of sleep. I look to my side, and find Maya laying, sprawled out across her bed with drool running down her chin. I let out a soft laugh.

I drag myself out of bed, and throw on a tee shirt and jeans with my vans. I head out to the cafeteria to grab something for breakfast, and plan to take a short walk through the campus. I walk over to the Starbucks and order a coffee with a muffin. I thank the cashier with a smile and start walking outside.

Once I open the door, the cool air rushes down my body, sending goosebumps everywhere. I take a deep breath of the air, which smells like grasses and flowers. A smile forms on my lips, and creases my eyes.

It is an amazing day. I wish that Lucas was here. I could talk with him for hours and hours about anything and everything. I hold my hand out, and smile when I see the diamond ring that symbolizes Lucas' love for me. Soon enough, we'll be living together and have our lives planned out together. I cannot wait to spend every minute with him, and share everything with him. Most people don't get their happy endings. Most people have to write their own happy endings. Yet, for Lucas and I, our happy ending was beginning once we met.

The sun shines through trees, leaving various rays of sun lying on the sidewalk, lighting it up. Flowers line the sidewalk, like they're showing me a path to follow. The sky has few clouds in it, with the blue sky painting a picture, and birds flying through it, ruining it.

So what if I am partly bad? I still have a heart of gold, that will never be over taken by the darkness, and that I promise myself. I will not loose sight of what;s important, ever.

Suddenly, I feel a bag being thrown over my head, and my breathing stops for a second while my heart leaps out of my chest. I try to scream, but it's muffled by the bag, or whatever is on my head.

"Shhh..." a voice whispers. My blood runs cold as a line of shivers run up and down my back multiple times. I kick my legs, trying to aim at something I can't see. My arms reach up and grab the person's wrist. I bite their wrist as hard as I can, and as they let go and scream in pain, I take the chance to run. I ran and ran, yanking the bag off of my head. Once it's off, I notice that we somehow ended up in an empty and dark alley. My legs don't stop running, and don't stop until they get home.

I shove my key into the keyhole, yank the door open and slam it shut, with my back up against it. My breaths are heavy and short, and my heart is beating at 100 miles per hour. I close my eyes as tears fall.

"Riley?"

Oh shit. Someone is here. I can't let them know about this. They'll freak out. I look up and find Lucas sitting on my bed. Maya's bed is empty with her sheets sprawled across. His face shows concern and worry as he stands up and slowly walks towards me.

"Riles, what's wrong?" he asks as his hands make their way to my face and his thumbs wipe my tears away.

Think fast, Riley. Uh... "I-I'm just worried about my powers." I whisper. It's barely audible, but he can still hear it.

"Riles, it's going to be okay. No matter what, we're always going to be right next to you. Right by your side, to keep you safe." his eyes are locked on mine, and he nods with every word he says.

I nod in return. Yeah sure. You guys weren't there for me today. Thanks for that. "Okay." I say and throw in a smile, just to convince him a little more.

He returns the smile, and his hand finds my chin. "There she is." he smiles.

"Wait, who? What?" I ask, clearly confused.

He laughs. "You. There's my Smiley Riley. My Princess Dancing Sunshine. My Princess. My fiance." he lifts his eyebrows with the last one, causing me to laugh.

"I love you so much." he smiles.

"I love you more." I smile.

"Not possible." he says as he presses his lips against mine. I love moments like these. I wish that I could just freeze time and live in them forever.

But, you know, the dangers of life are never far from you.
