Two
"His name's Ace by the way," said Carla as she slid next to me at the dining table. I choked on my milk in surprise and turned to her with wide eyes.
"Damn he looked more like a Julian or a Ryan," I said. Ace. What a badass name for an innocent-looking boy. What a conundrum. Maybe the boy wasn't exactly what he seemed to be. My interest went up a notch.
"You know he doesn't have to be a goody-two-shoes just cause he looks like it," said Carla with a frown as she dug into her burger. Or at least what seemed to be a burger. I'd lost track of all the shit our dining hall had come up with in the name of food over the years. Not that it had stopped me from eating it.
"Carla honey the kid looks like he needs a hand to hold at the zoo," I said, albeit with a bit of exaggeration and she shrugged with an expression that said fair enough. I looked over the entire dining hall and noticed Ace standing alone at the corner of the hall, looking like he'd rather be anywhere else. He was still devastatingly gorgeous, but with the muscled arms crossing his chest, he looked like he was warding people away. Same kid, same.
"I'll be right back," I said and just as I made a move to walk away, Carla took my arm and yanked me back, her freshly manicured nails digging into my wrist. Maybe her fist couldn't do much damage, but her nails definitely could.
"He's got a girlfriend Rach," she said seriously.
"Relax, I'm not going to hit on him," I said, rolling my eyes before yanking my arm away and making my way towards him. As I got closer, his eyes snapped up to meet mine. Yep, there was definitely some kind of interest there as he looked me up and down.
"You lost or something," I asked as I stepped in front of him, maintaining a respectful distance just in case his girlfriend decided to appear out of nowhere. Fighting jealous girls were never my thing. They talked more than they actually fought, from what I'd seen.
"No, just waiting for Kaelie," he said, looking at the front door. He didn't seem to be excited to see her. Huh, were there problems in paradise?
"Your girlfriend," I asked, confirming and he nodded.
"How long have you two been together," I asked casually, as I looked at the front door as well. Most likely that brat was making out with some other guy in the janitor's closet or something. I quickly looked around the cafeteria and saw my brother in the corner. Thank god he wasn't involved this time.
"A couple of months," he said. He didn't sound too happy about it. Then again, when did teenage guys ever like to be tied down to one girl?
"So a couple of months of her cheating on you and you ignoring it," I said, getting straight to the point. I didn't like her taking advantage of this guy's innocence while she went and made a mockery of their relationship, and teenage relationships in general. This was the reason why my mom refused to let my brother and I get a boyfriend until 10th grade.
Now that I think about, maybe I should have listened to her. Saved me a bucketload of tears.
"She's not cheating on me," he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I tried to turn my usual indifferent expression to one that resembled some kind of sympathy. I probably looked absolutely retarded but it was worth a shot.
"She kissed my brother," I said and pretty boy's jaw tightened. Maybe I should piss him off more. He looked good when he was mad.
"No, your brother kissed her," he said stubbornly and I rolled my eyes.
"Darling on any normal circumstance I would have agreed with you. But you see, my brother doesn't lie to me. Not about anything," I said, trying not to get pissed of at this guy for accusing my brother in this case. I noticed he'd flushed when I'd called him darling and I let a smirk play across my lips. Yep, he was so interested.
"Kaelie doesn't cheat," he said stubbornly and my patience wore thin. I'd never had much, to begin with.
"How about I prove it to you," I said. I didn't like being accused of being wrong. It was a severe blow to my ego. Carla believed a blow to my ego would do me good.
"Prove what," he asked. Had he seriously lost track of the conversation? Oh, wait he was too busy staring at my lips which were still tilted up in a smirk.
"That your girlfriend's a cheater and that you deserve better," I said confidently and made a move to walk away.
"Why do you care," he called out. His words stopped me in my tracks. Why did I care? It's not like this boy meant anything to me. I literally met him this morning.
But then I realized it was because he reminded me of myself, so innocent, naïve and trusting. He didn't deserve to get hurt, just like I hadn't. But instead of telling him any of this, I spun around and dropped him a wink instead.
"Because I want you," I said, being a lot more forward than I usually was to distract him from the truth, and he flushed red as I turned away to head back to Carla.
