Chapter Twelve

"Still bugs her," Colt said as he heard Dana head down the stairs.

"Of course it does," Jesse replied, grabbing a broom and started sweeping.

Colt watched him thoughtfully. "Nothing you can do."

"I wish I could."

"You do enough. You and your family. You always give her a nice party. You do that three wishes thing..."

"I wish it were enough," Jesse's hands tightened on the broom handle.

Colt sighed. "I know."

"Do you think anything would help? I mean, psychologically. I mean, what would your shrink say about her, you think?"

Colt took another gulp of water. "You gonna pay me a hundred bucks an hour?"

"If it would help," Jesse nodded.

"I don't know. I don't think anything would help, honestly," Colt answered, scratching his five o'clock shadow.

"That's very helpful, thanks, doc," Jesse scoffed and returned to sweeping.

"She uh...probably needs to feel like someone loves her. I mean with her folks gone all the time, she probably feels like they don't love her."

"Dana knows we love her."

Colt shrugged. "She might know it, but not know it, you know?"

Jesse looked at him. "Maybe you should become a shrink," Jesse told him.

"No, thanks."

"Is that how you feel? Like we don't love you?" Jesse asked concerned.

"Damn it, Jesse!" Colt snapped. "Don't start in on me."

Jesse winced and put up a hand. "Just trying to help."

Colt sighed. "Look. You know me," he said and was silent for a moment while he calmed himself down. "I talk to the shrink, Jess. That's enough. Just leave me alone about that stuff."

"Alright," Jess answered looking away from his cousin. It wasn't a day he was willing to talk. Some days Jesse could get him to say some things. Other days, Colt would yell at him and take off. At least, today, he was somewhere in between, so Jesse didn't want to push it.
