Chapter Thirteen

"Summer, I'm out of here," Colt said, walking into the kitchen, and planted a kiss on his new cousin's cheek.

Jesse was a lucky man. The girl was hot. On top of that, she was really smart and was a nice person to talk with. Colt saw a movement out of the corner of his eye and glanced over. He hadn't realized that Dana was still in the house.

Summer smiled at him. "Okay. Will you be back tomorrow?"

"Um, yeah, probably. Depends on work, you know," he answered, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked over at Dana.

"You can't stay for dinner tonight?" Summer asked, pulling out a pan of chicken from the oven.

"I can't. Hot date. Which, if I don't get out of here soon, I'm gonna be late for." He answered with a grin and looked at his watch.

"See ya, Dane," he said to Dana, stepping towards the foyer.

"What, I don't get a kiss too?" she teased.

"I don't want a black eye. I've got a meeting in the morning. Don't want them to think my date did it," he answered with a wink as he walked backwards.

Dana and Summer chuckled. "Bye!" They called as he reached the front door.

*******************************

Dana sat through the seemingly endless meal with her mother droning on about the fashions of Barcelona and how she would bring back Dana a fabulous new wardrobe. Maybe a new wardrobe was the trick to get Dana out of the miserable rut she was in, of finding a suitable man.

She went home with a major headache and ignored the pile of catalogs stacked on her nightstand. She climbed into bed even though it was only nine o'clock.

The phone rang and Dana groaned. "What?" she answered miserably.

"You okay?" Summer asked concerned.

"You have dinner with my mother and then see if you're okay afterwards," Dana answered, rubbing her forehead.

"What happened?"

"Nothing. Just her usual babble about fashion and the fact that I'm not married and bearing her grandchildren yet," Dana muttered.

"Sorry."

"I'm the one who's sorry. You don't want to hear my misery while you got that bundle of joy in you." Dana told her. She was quiet a moment, "I'm so happy for the two of you. Have I told you that?"

Summer sniffled. "I wish you were as happy."

"Maybe someday," Dana replied, rubbing her forehead again, not wanting to think about it.

"Of course, someday. How about that hunky new cousin of mine?"

"Who? Colt?!" Dana asked in shock.

"Yeah, Colt," Summer said with a laugh.

"You've got to be kidding."

"Why not?"

"Why not?!" Dana shrieked. "Because we ... we're just us. We fight endlessly and mercilessly."

"He's cute."

"Summer. I've gone for cute and paid for it. I won't make that mistake ever again."

"Jeremy?"

"Yes. Jeremy."

"That's just one guy. You can't base the whole existence of men on one guy."

"I know....hey, why are you calling anyway? Is Jesse driving you mad with all the hammering again?" Dana asked, wanting to change the subject of both Colt and Jeremy.

"Oh, they stopped. For now, anyway. I just wanted to see if you wanted to come to dinner on Friday since you couldn't stay tonight."

"Sure. I'd love to!"
