Chapter Eleven

"Hey, Dana!" Summer exclaimed, opening the front screen door.

Dana hugged her friend. "Hey, mommy!" She replied in glee, patting Summer's recently growing stomach.

Summer put a hand on her slight baby bump. "I can't wait!" Summer stepped aside so Dana could enter.

"Wow, it's looking great in here!" Dana exclaimed, admiring the shiny hardwood floors of the foyer with a long Persian style carpet runner down the hallway and up the stairs.

When she had left at the beginning of May, the property had been vacant, rundown, and just in the beginning stages of Jesse's renovations.

"Thanks. Jesse has been working really hard to get the place finished." Summer grimaced when the pounding of hammers rang out again.

Dana chuckled. "Never ends, huh?"

"It's until all hours of the night," Summer answered, rolling her eyes.

"What's he working on now?" Dana asked, setting her purse on a small table underneath a large mirror on the wall of the foyer.

"The nursery," Summer answered grinning.

"Oh, cool! Can I see it?"

"There's not much done yet, but sure, go on up. Jesse will be happy to see you. And I'm just getting dinner ready, can you stay?"

"Not for dinner, thanks. I'm meeting my mom at the club. Jesse had called and said he has something he wants me to look over for the garage. Some catalogs, if I know him."

"I think so. He and Colt were looking at some interior design catalogs this morning. Go on up."

"Thanks," Dana said, climbing the now sturdy and beautiful staircase.

"Colt's up there too, by the way," Summer called up to her.

"Great," Dana muttered, climbing the stairs.

How was she going to handle seeing Colt again? Were they to act like friends or go on fighting? Was she still going to feel the way she'd been feeling about him when she saw him?

When he looked at her, would she get those butterflies in her stomach and the tightness in her chest?

Would Jesse or Colt, for that matter, notice how much she was attracted to him?

Dana studied the men from the doorway. Her best friend, Jesse, muscular and trim, a golden boy. Not a trace of imperfection on his body. She appreciated Jesse's body for what it was, a piece of art- like a nice statue of a Greek god, but she'd never been attracted to him. Luckily.

Dana loved their relationship. They were best of friends and they loved each other as brother and sister. She wouldn't want anything to ever get in the way of what they had. Dana was so happy that Jesse had found love in her other best friend.

She glanced over at Colt. He was a few inches taller than Jesse, more muscular and bulky. Colt had removed his shirt and Dana had a full view of the scars that marred his body- front and back.

Tears threatened to spill at the sight of the jagged scars, but as always, Dana quickly blinked them away so Colt wouldn't see her crying over him. He would hate that.

Colt's left arm was marked by an eagle, a symbol for someone he once cared about. It was the only way she'd ever known of him showing his true feelings and she'd only found that out the night before after years of knowing him.

Colt laughed at his cousin. His eyes sparkled in friendship. He felt her eyes watching him and his eyes moved over to hers.

The light in them dimmed and he stood upright from his squatting position. He'd been caught in a pleasant moment. Dana sensed that he was debating on how to handle the situation as well. Fight or be friendly. Jesse glanced over as he felt the tension from Colt.

"Hey, Dane," Jesse said, coming over to hug her.

"Back," Dana said, crossing her fingers in the sign of a cross. Jesse was covered in dry wall dust as was Colt.

Jesse grinned. "What's the matter? Afraid of a little dirt?" Jesse asked, continuing to approach her.

"That ain't a little," Dana replied, side stepping him.

"Hi, Colt," Dana said, going for friendly as she looked down at him as he had squatted back down and was messing with some tools.

"Hey, Dana." He glanced up briefly. The look had been almost indifferent, she thought. He didn't care if she was there or wasn't.

"Um, you got some catalogs or something for me?" Dana asked Jesse.

"Yeah. I'll go get them," he said with a frown, glancing over at Colt.

"Don't worry. We won't bite each other's heads off." Dana told him.

"Good, 'cause dinner's almost ready. He'll need his head to eat," Jesse said with a smile and left the room.

"How you doing?" Dana asked Colt when Jesse left.

"Okay. You?" he asked, standing up.

"Okay," Dana answered, shifting on her feet uncomfortably.

"I've been helping Jesse with some of the renovations." Colt wiped some dust off his arms with his hands.

"I can see that," Dana said, nodding.

" 'Course," he said, shaking his head, like it was a stupid thing to say. He grabbed the water bottle from the window sill and took a drink.

"I...um...I had a nice time last night," she said quickly.

He lowered the bottle. "Yeah. Me too. Glad we can be civil," he said with a slight smile.

"Me too," she said, twisting her hands nervously. Why was she nervous around him? She never used to. She could lay into the insults without second thought.

Colt took a step towards her. His hand outstretched. "Dane, I..." He stopped when Jesse appeared in the doorway.

"Sorry, got them a bit smudged," Jesse said, coming in and handed her a pile of catalogs while trying to wipe off the dust.

"It's okay," Dana told him, taking them fully from him.

"You staying for dinner?" Jesse asked her.

"Can't. Sorry. I'm meeting my mom," she told him, scrunching up her nose.

"What's the special occasion?" Jesse asked. "It's not your birthday for another week."

"Probably feeling guilty. They're off to Barcelona tomorrow," she explained.

"Until when?" Jesse demanded.

"Two weeks," Dana asked with a shrug as if it didn't matter to her as she flipped through a catalog.

"So, they're missing your birthday yet again," Jesse said concerned.

Dana shrugged again. "I'm used to it, Jess. It doesn't bother me anymore." She squared her shoulders. "Anyways, I got to go. See you later," she said and kissed his cheek quickly.

She walked to the door. "Bye, Colt," she told him, looking back with a slight smile.

He put his hand up in a half wave.
