Chapter 79

"Knot, you don't understand. He is too perfect. I don't even know why he is with me. This messed up shit is certainly not going to help my case. I don't want to be helpless, and need him to rescue me everytime. I'm not some damsel in distress. What if we broke up or something? I would have to deal with this on own anyway." Arthit waved one hand in the air regarding the mess.

Ding Dong. Ding Dong. Ding Dong. Ding

"....you don't know how stupid you sound." Knot shouted over his shoulder as he answered the impatient door. "Hi!"

"Hello, I'm here for Arthit. It's urgent."

Arthit turned around, and ran to the door hearing the familiar voice.

"Luke! What's wrong?" Arthit looked at a grim looking Luke.

"Mr. Suthilak got into an accident, and I couldn't reach you by phone."

Arthit's eyes went wide. He grabbed Luke by his arms. "Take me to him. Is he okay? I was just with him earlier. How did this happen?"

"Please just come with me. Madam is already on her way to the hospital."

Arthit turned to look at Knot, and then to his mother's room.

"Just go. I will watch your mom. Go." Knot said waving his hand.

Arthit grabbed his jacket, and quickly left with Luke. He cursed himself for leaving his phone on silent in his jacket.

On their way, Arthit was nervously shaking his legs in the passenger seat. Traffic was moving too slow, and the hospital was all the way on the other side of the city.

"Do you know his condition?" Arthit asked Luke.

"No. Thak was trailing him, so he saw the whole thing happen. All I know is that, it was a side impact. I came looking for you as soon as I found out. Mr. Suthilak was just on his way to the hospital. So, his status is unknown." Luke said while he is also frustrated with the heavy traffic.

"Maybe I should call Thak." Arthit took out his phone. Thak picked up by the the second ring.

Arthit: Thak! How is Kongpob doing?

Arthit asked anxiously.

Thak: He is in the operating room right now.

Arthit: Was he hurt badly?

Thak: We won't know until the doctors come out to inform us.

Arthit: How did this happen?

Thak: Mr. Suthilak took his motorbike out for a ride. He was not in the best condition if I may say so. His pickup and acceleration was rather sluggish. However, the accident was not his fault. He was heading straight, but a car on his left was cutting over, and hit him. The driver was on his phone. Usually, Mr. Suthilak is very quick to respond to any possible danger, but for some reason he didn't see it coming this time. I even honked to try to get his attention before impact, but he didn't notice.

Arthit: Was it really bad?

Thak: It's hard to say. His leg took the impact, and he was tossed off his bike. But I'm glad he had his helmet on. I have to go. Madam just arrived.

Doot.

Arthit wanted to ask more, but Thak had hung up already. Arthit couldn't help think it was probably his fault that Kongpob wasn't paying attention.

Arthit and Luke had finally arrived at the hospital after almost two hours later. Sonya was sitting in a chair typing on a laptop.

Arthit rushed over to Sonya. "Sonya! How is Kongpob doing?" Under normal circumstances, Arthit would be too scared to approach her. But right now, he left his fears behind. He needed to know how Kongpob was doing.

Sonya patted the empty seat next to her without looking up. "Have a seat. We will find out soon." Sonya went right back to her work.

"So, they haven't said anything at all?" Arthit can't understand how Sonya can be so calm while he is freaking out here.

"No. Here, read this proposal for me. Highlight the key points." Sonya handed Arthit a file without looking at him.

Despite what Sonya was showing, she was actually really nervous under her calm demeanor. She didn't look Arthit in the eyes because she was afraid that they would mirror her worries. She has always used work as a way of escape. She didn't have any comforting words to offer Arthit, so she gave him work too. After all, what's the use of crying a river? They might as well be productive.

Arthit didn't know what to do other than follow what Sonya asked him to do. Although, he couldn't focus at all. He kept looking at the set of doors to the operating room, willing someone to come out, and tell him something. Arthit read the same sentence over and over again without the words really sinking in. His fingers pinching the corner of the paper until it was worn out.

"This proposal is the one Kongpob was working on in Shanghai. If I can take care of it, then Kongpob will have more time for proper recovery. That stubborn boy tries to work even when he is sick." Sonya said as she signed some documents on her touch screen.

With new resolve, Arthit tried to focus his energy on the proposal. He figured at least he can try to help Kongpob this way. After a while he was really engrossed into the proposal, and highlighted all the key points like Sonya had asked him to do. He added comments and suggestions that he thought would add value to the project.

Sonya side glanced at Arthit a few times, and was impressed by some of his suggestions. She didn't really expect Arthit to be working. Sonya was more or less just trying to provide some distraction.

A doctor came out of the operating room, removing her facemask.

Sonya immediately jumped out of her seat. She tossed her laptop so quick, that her bodyguard next to her almost couldn't react fast enough to catch it.

Arthit also got up immediately casting the file aside, and scrambled right up to Sonya's side.

"Doctor, how's my son? Please tell me he is okay." Sonya asked anxiously.

"Yes doctor, is he all right? Can we see him?" Arthit added, and Sonya immediately nodded that she wanted to see her son.

"Please calm down. The patient is in no danger at the moment. The impact hit the patient's left leg, so that is broken. He will have to keep a cast on for a while. Body bruises and pain will be expected. He is lucky that he had a helmet on. There's no internal hemorrhage. However, he most likely still suffered a concussion. We will have to monitor him for the next 24 hours to determine the severity." The doctor stopped to take a breath.

"So, can we see him?" Arthit asked again.

"Yes. After he is transferred to his room. However, the patient has not come out of anesthesia yet. And depending on his condition, he may or may not wake up within the next 24 hours." The doctor explained.

The operating room doors opened behind the doctor, and they all stepped aside to let the nurses push the patient out.

Sonya and Arthit immediately tried to get a better look at Kongpob.

Kongpob looked so pale. There was a blue cast on his left leg from his foot up to his knee.

"Patient is transferring to room VIP 206. Visitation is at doctor's discretion in 30 minutes." One of the nurses announced as Kongpob was rolled away.

Arthit and Sonya sat next to Kongpob's bed silently. They each ate a sandwich earlier, and now it's into the evening. Kongpob still hasn't woken. Arthit really wanted to hold Kongpob's hand, but Sonya was currently holding it. She gently brushed Kongpob's cheek, and touched his eyebrows before sweeping his bangs aside.

"I need to go to the restroom. I will be back." Sonya announced before leaving the room.

Arthit watched Sonya step out. There's a bathroom in the VIP suite, why didn't Sonya just use the one here? Arthit didn't understand, but he really didn't care. All he cared was now he was left alone with Kongpob. He held Kongpob's hand against his own cheek. He kissed Kongpob's forehead.

"I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. Me and my stupid ego. Please wake up. Please tell me you are okay." Arthit squeezed Kongpob's hand.

Arthit fussed over Kongpob's hair, his hospital gown, and the tubes hooked up to Kongpob. The little movements here and there caused Kongpob to stir. Kongpob's eyes slowly fluttered open. He felt the weight on his hand. He saw light and moving shadows.

"Kongpob! You're awake. Let me call the doctor." Arthit pressed the call button, and then he went to tell Luke and Thak outside the room.

Kongpob was confused. His head was throbbing. The noise around him was too loud. He grabbed his pounding head with both hands.

"Ahhh....uhhh....my head hurts." Kongpob groaned.

"Kongpob, are you okay? Don't move too much. Your leg is in a cast." Arthit tried to calm Kongpob down, grabbing both his wrists from his head.

"What? My leg is in a cast?" Kongpob tried to move his leg anyway. "Fuck! Ouuu."

Everything is blurry, his head is pounding, and his leg is broken. This is just great.

"Kongpob! Don't do that. You will hurt yourself. The doctor is coming." Arthit pulled Kongpob's hand from his head.

Kongpob pulled his hands back. He can't. He just can't. The rollercoaster of emotions with Arthit is exhausting. And right now he is in too much pain to deal with it.

"Son! You're awake!" Sonya came rushing through the door with the doctor trailing behind her.

Arthit immediately moved over to give way to Sonya and the doctor. He fought back the hurt he felt when Kongpob pulled away. He deserved that. And turned his attention to the doctor.

The doctor was no longer in her scrubs and hair cap. She wore her long black hair back in a ponytail. Her lab coat was longer than the pencil black skirt she was wearing underneath it. She paired it with a silky cream colored blouse making her look sophisticated and elegant. Arthit couldn't help notice how pretty she looked.

Sonya kissed Kongpob on his cheek before letting the doctor examine Kongpob.

"Mr. Suthilak, I'm Dr. Kya, can you tell me how you feel?" The doctor asked while she took her pocket flashlight, and hovered very close to examine Kongpob's pupils. She gently fixed Kongpob's bangs that she had just pushed aside back in place.

"My head hurts a lot. I can't see clearly. Everything is blurry, but I can see light and shadows. My leg doesn't hurt unless I try to move it. My whole body hurts." Kongpob tried to explain clearly.

"Mr. Suthilak, you are suffering a concussion. I will prescribe you some pain medication for your headache and your body aches. Your vision's recovery will require proper rest. Being able to see light is a good sign though. Recovery time can be anywhere from 7 to 14 days. We will keep monitoring it, in case it's anything more serious." The doctor scribbled something on the chart, and gave it to the nurse.

"I wish all my patients were as calm as you. This is good. It would definitely make recovery smoother. Your leg will take a little longer to heal. Maybe 6 weeks plus therapy if you cooperate properly. However, you can anticipate a full recovery. I will come back to check on you a little later." Dr. Kya explained.

"Thank you doctor." Kongpob said with his eyes closed. The light was making his head hurt more.

"Yes, thank you Dr. Kya." Sonya said.

The doctor looked at Kongpob, and then smiled at Sonya before leaving the room. Sonya walked over to Kongpob's side. "Son, does it hurt a lot? Why were you so careless? How many times have I asked you to stop riding that death trap? You just won't listen."

"I'm sorry to worry you mother. I don't know how this happened, but I won't let it happen again." Kongpob said holding his mother's hand.

Arthit stood there silently watching them. He didn't know what Kongpob meant, but his heart ached hearing those words. What did he mean by 'he won't let it happen again'? Did Kongpob mean he won't ride his bike again, or he won't be bothered with him again?

AN: For the first time, Kongpob is truly upset and disappointed with Arthit. 😔

Who thinks Kongpob should call it quits?
