III: Prina
I was late to class, my lunch rations were going to be docked. That didn't bother me though, I could live without a few meals, actually I wasn't very hungry lately. My appetite was ruined by all the stress of planning our escape. My mother and father planned most of it, but I took it in my hands to change those plans so they wouldn't be held responsible for our actions.
Tapping my pencil on my desk, I went over everything I planned already. The supplies were hidden, in Davis little hideaway, I had gone back to my fathers friend to tell him to cancel the plans. Instead I went to my mother's friend to figure a way out of the city. Lastly, I had used the old made in the deteriorating library to find a place for my sister and i too camp out at after we fled the city.
"Prina! Stop tapping and start writing." My teacher snapped at me. I flushed slightly, bowing my head as i began to scribble words across my paper. Even if i didn't plan on actually writing i could at least look as if i was. OUt of the corner of my eye i could see my sister staring at me, it took all my strength not to look at her.
I began to write forreal this time. We had to write about our dreams. Dreams that will never come true, giving us only false hope of a better, brighter future. My dream, my dream was being far away from Fallence where death lurked around the corner. My dream was to be somewhere with lots of green plants, with a river running not to far away, where peons would be banned, and days were spent doing things you enjoyed.
I wanted to make that dream come true, that's why we were going to leave the city and find somewhere to make that dream happen.
Our class room door opened and in walked a young women, a long braid of light brown hair trailing down her back. SHe stepped up to my teacher desk, whispering as to not distract us, but everyone was already staring. "Are you missing any students today?" She asked my teacher.
"A few are absent, likely sick or helping their parents. What is going on?"
"Give me the records of the absent students please."
My teacher nodded frantically, her hands shaking slightly as she opened her desk drawer, which got stuck, causing her to yank it and mutter apologies to the Peon women.
As my teacher search for the files, the peon turned to us. "I'm sorry to do this to you right now, i know you should have a few more months in school," SHe took a deep breath closing her eyes for a moment, "Classes will end today. You will start training for the NEcron and you have very little time to train so i would take it very seriously."
My teacher gasped, shocked, she dropped a folder of papers scattering them onto the floor. In a hurry she swiped them up and into the file again. She looked at us, the student, with tears in her eyes. She held our eyes for a few seconds as the peon kept talking. She didn't know we would be taken today and she didn't want it to happen but she could do nothing to stop it.
"THere will be peons in the training room to help you learn skills you will need, i recommend you do not take this training lightly, as your life will depend on it. This is no joke, but it is a serious matter in deed and i hope you all will try your best."
ANother peon stuck his head in the door, "Tara, i have a few student missing in my class. We will need to send Micah and her squad to collect them."
THE peon women, Tara, nodded her head, "Yes, Mika, i'll let her know right away once i get the files of the missing student from this class."
She turned toward us again, "Please exit the room when i call your name." SHe said as she took a page from Mika, " Madison Rider, PRina and Ida Kaul, Elisa Ion , Reese Quinn.."
I Didn't hear the rest of the student that were called as i stepped out of the room with my sister holding my hand. I was on the verge of hyperventilating. All this time i had been preparing to flee the city just for it to be crushed in a single minute. Ida could sense my emotions, my panic.
Quickly she pushed me against the wall, putting her hands on both sides of my face. "It's ok, listen, we knew this would happen. IT's going to be ok."
I couldn't meet her eyes, my breaths got short as my heart felt as though is was beating so fast and hard my chest would explode. My vision began to go in and out, like i was looking through a tunnel.
"Look at me prina," MY sister growled at me, my head snapped to her face, my eye s locking with hers. THe tunnel seemed to fade as i began to see my sister start to panic herself. "We will make it, i promise." I could speak, instead i just nodded.
As straightened myself up, i hugged Ida as tight as i could. More students filed out of the class and huddled in the hallway. PEons stationed outside every classroom door. NOra ran out of the classroom , searching for Ida. IDa stepped away to talk to her.
I turned to look back inside my classroom, the last time i would ever see it. "Excuse me, you can't go back in there." MIka, the poem, told me. "I know" i whispered.
For a moment he looked sympathetic, until another peon walked by. He straightened and his face turned to stone. Tara came out of the classroom holding a stack of papers. SHe whispered something to MIka before taking the stack he held in his hand."Micah, here are the missing student that need to be collected. They should be at home, if not check their parents assigned work place. We need to find every single one of those students." MIcah nodded as she motioned with her hand for the squad to follow after her.
They marched through the hall, pressign us, the students, against the walls as they passed by.
Reese was using his power, which he came into at a very early age. Some say from the day he was born he could use his gift, and others say it only started when he was a toddler, regardless he had started using it long before anyone else ever had.
A pile of green grass was always under his feet, flowers sprouting in his wake, vines hanging off of him, squirming along the walls. It was creepy how often he used it but sometimes I was in awe of him. I only wish i knew what my gift was and how to use it, but i haven't came into mine yet.
After majority of the students were taking from their classes a peon stood at the end of the hall, "Every one, single file now!"
The peon, Mika, went by his side, slightly shaking his head. "We need for you all to be orderly, otherwise things will get out of hand. Please line up and prepare to follow us."
Shuffling of feet sounded on the floor as everyone lined up against one wall. Ida came up behind me and grabbed ahold of my hand, which i was thankful for. I know i wouldn't be able to lose her along the way since we were all going to the same place, but i needed her strength to keep me strong, she always seemed to know when i needed her most.
After everyone had lined up Mika motioned for us to follow him as he exited the school building. A peon stood outside holding the doors as we left. I couldn't help but look back at the building. It was the last time id ever be in it, maybe even see it.
I tried to keep my head down as we were marched through the city, i didn't want to make eye contact with any one i knew. I didn't want to appear weak or scared, but that's exactly what i was. I was scared for my life, as it very well could end soon. Talents were killed just in the training grounds, that thought had me shaking.
Murmurs could be heard around us as parents and workers stopped in their tracks to watch us go by. Some mumbled how it was disgusting what they were doing to us.
"That's my son! Let him go!" A man yelled as he rushed to our line of scared teenagers. He tried pushing through the Peons but they batted him away like a fly. Shoving him to the ground and laughing at him. That didn't stop the man from getting back up and charging at the closest peon to him.
Together they went to the ground and were throwing punches at each other, He would land a few then the Peon would land more, that is before more peons grabbed the man away. His son tried to go to him, but once again a peon shoved him back in line. It was hard to watch, but we couldn't walk away. Everyone had stopped to see the spectacle. One Peon had ahold of the child trying to get to his father, he had tears streaming down his face, reaching for him. Three more were shoving his father away to get him out of reach while beating on him.
Mika finally came up to them and yanked the man from the vicious peons beating him, "Let him go!" he bellowed, at once they stepped a few steps back.
"He was trying to take a kid."
"He was trying to see his child, as you would if it were to happen to you."
"He needs to show some respect!"
Mika stared him down till the peon dropped his head. He turned to he beaten man that was bleeding from his face, "Sorry, but you cannot see your son right now. He will be home tonight."
"I just need to-"
"You can't, leave before things get worse." Mika told him sternly, the man eyed his son. who had calmed down once Mika pulled his father away, The man turned away wiping blood from his cheek and walked off, glancing back every so often. THe crowd parted for him to get through.
Mika turned to us, glaring dagger at the Peons who had abused the man and child, before turning that glare onto us. "You will look at the ground, and you will not step out of line once! If you do more people will be hurt. Do you understand?" Silence. "Do you understand?!" he screamed.
We mumbled a yes and nodded our heads as we looked to the ground. I wasn't going to disobey, i didn't want anyone hurt, and i knew the peons would get any reason to hurt one of us, and they would enjoy doing so.
I squeezed Ida's hand as hard as i could, trying to keep the tears from dripping out. SHe squeezed back gently, before giving me a slight shove to get me moving. Silently we marched, Peons on both sides, weapons at the ready.
I didn't look up until i heard a door opening, the door to the training grounds. Inside was a lone Person standing at the far end of the room. Mats were down on the ground, walls covering in different weapons. The peons pointing us where to go, we were forced to stand one by one in rows, facing the Peon in front.
The way they were treating us, were as if we were soldiers. Waiting for our command. Our command was wait for the rest to come with Micah.
