Chapter Fifteen

Bryce

I searched the sky frantically, praying he'd just take her somewhere and place her down gently but I knew differently. There was no such luck or mercy when it came to an Archer, despite his once calm nature.
I heard the scream and knew he'd dropped her. The shrill scream became louder, closer then faded away as if she were out of breath. Then it stopped and a sickening thud sounded.
I stiffened unable to think coherently for a moment until another scream, Brylee's scream, kicked my mind back into gear.
She'd been unable to keep up with Breia and me as we searched the dark sky and chose to stay in one spot.
We ran back to our sister but I skid to a stop as I drew near the body, already knowing I didn't want to witness this.
My throat became dry as Breia slid next to Aubrey's body as if there was something she could do to help.
"Bryce!" She shouted, snapping me out of my daze.
I ran to her, not realizing I had started weeping until it became hard to breathe.
Her body was mangled from the impact, limbs contorted, bones no doubt shattered. Red dyed her dark hair and gown, running from her soaked crown down to her back.
A crimson tear ran from her petrified eyes, staining her flushed cheeks and I cried with her.
I couldn't remember the last time I sobbed but the salt water ran freely. The pain in my chest was overbearing, ripping me from the core until I fell to my knees beside her.
I felt like lying with her, resting beside her.
"I'm sorry," Breia choked out. "I'm so sorry."
She no longer sat next to me but stood, looming over us. I could hear Brylee's distraught sobbing over mine but I knew she cried for different reasons.
I lied my head onto Aubrey's arm, hating the fact she was no longer warm.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." Breia whispered repeatedly. "I choose...I choose to go home. I'm sorry. I never meant for this to happen. I'm sorry. I choose, Bryce. I've made my choice."
She was crying now, too, holding a limp Brylee in her arms as they both sank to the ground.
Our weaker sister had lost consciousness from the fright of Aubrey's body. Breia shook the both of them with the sobs she was letting loose and I couldn't help but become angry.
Now that Aubrey was dead, she was choosing to return home. After I had...had fallen for this mortal she had tried to force upon me? Now she chose to come home?
Before I could voice my thoughts, Manakel descended from the sky with a naughty smile on his lips.
"You've gone soft, Bryce. I thought you of all our people would be immune to their idiocy. I guess I was wrong." He hovered above us all, back wings flapping fervently to keep him in one place. "I had to kill her, Bryce. She knew far too much."
A sudden pain took over my body, sending me on my hands over Aubrey's lifeless form. It felt as if something was being ripped from my core. I arched my back unable to take the hot pain that made my shirt begin to tighten until it ripped from my body from the pressure of the wings that tore through my flesh.
I screamed in pain as I felt them expel from me.
"No, not possible!" Manakel exclaimed in fury. "I clipped your wings. You are not worthy to come back."
I pushed myself from my knees and stood, stretching my white wings. They were stiff but they were mine and I was glad to have them back.
A shudder rippled through me as I pulled the torn material from my body and shook my wings, letting them expand then rest against my back.
I looked towards Manakel who's expression was laced with fear though his body was rigid and confident.
"You must understand." He began advancing towards me. "It was all for the balance."
When he finished he hovered in front of me.
"Please, under-"
He pulled a dagger from his waist, cutting off his sentence causing Breia to gasp loudly as he swung for my heart.
I dodged his blow and lunged for him, both of us taking flight.
