Chapter 2 Would You Like A Date With That?
The next time I saw my handsome stranger wasn't on the subway, to my disappointment. It was at Gramercy's where I worked. I'd been sketching my cartoons in my palm-sized notebook as customers weren't pouring in today since it was pouring outside. Autumn showers sure put a damper on dating, I observed. City folk preferred to stay indoors, glued to their TVs. Oh, well. At least I had a few spare minutes to myself. But when I glanced up as a customer walked in, I did a double-take. It was him again!
I slipped my notebook into my pocket in a hurry. I didn't ever think my handsome stranger would come here. He can afford to eat here? This place wasn't exactly Starbucks...
I quickly turned away, not really wanting to meet the guy I developed a crush on like this. See, a girl tends to shy back from the flirting affinity when she's wearing black and white and serving the severed limb of a pig which was due on a table just then. But when I peeked at him again and saw the hot stranger sitting at a table alone by the window, he caught sight of me and I nearly sent the pig flying. Wouldn't that have been a sight.
"H-hi!" I greeted him, getting over my surprise after safely serving the pig. "It's you! What are you doing here?"
"Hoping to get a bite to eat," he said with his usual model smile. "But it's an unexpected pleasure seeing you again. You work here?"
"Y-yes, I'm a waitress," I answered truthfully although with some reserve as it was a little embarrassing admitting to my lowly job. No use trying to hide it though, his eyes traveled down to my golden name pin on my chest.
"Ana. so that's your name. I was wondering. Such a cute little name." He looked so pleased to have found out my name that I realized I didn't know his! We never exchanged names yesterday on the subway! But I couldn't ask him as a waitress to a customer, that would be rude.
"Yes, er, can I get you something?" I offered, still burning with curiosity about his name. "I'd be happy to wait on you."
"That makes two of us," he mumbled, and I blinked, a pleasant heat warming my cheeks. Did he just—accidentally flirt with me?
"Ahem, I'd actually love to try out the burger here," he blurted out quickly as if to cover up his last line. Okay, smooth. He must really like round sandwiches. I nodded, taking the menu from him.
"Sure, coming right up. How about some dessert to go with that?" I suggested. A soft smile played on his lips.
"I think your company is sweet enough." Whoa, that was definitely a pickup line! Was he—snap out of it, Ana, you're working!
"What time do you take off that uniform?" He asked, ogling his eyes at me as if he was oblivious to the fact that he was flirting with me. I blinked.
"Excuse me?" I asked in surprise.
"I mean what time does your shift end?" He asked quickly, as if embarrassed. Maybe he didn't mean what I thought and was innocently asking what time I got off work.
"Er, four," I said, still a little dazed by his apparent flirting. His easy smile returned.
"That'd be great. Maybe I can see you then?" He asked expectantly. My mouth fell open.
"Er..." Great job, Ana, you just got asked out by a hot guy who seems interested in you and all you can say is 'er'. To add to it, my manager called out to me demanding I do my job right and serve people's flatbread before it becomes flatter. With an apology, I snuck away from the handsome stranger, leaving him with neither a yes nor a no. Dared I meet the guy at four?
