10. The Shore
Katherine and Daniel
Katherine held the dagger in her hands and presented it to the one she called Davian. Daniel admired his reflection through the shine of the dagger. Little did he realize that his breath could momentarily fog his reflection. It had become apparent that this dagger had been finely crafted for bloodshed. This was not a toy for a child to play with. He soon handed it back to Katherine.
"Place your compass on the ground," commanded the girl. "I will place the dagger on the compass.
He listened to her direction and did so. Katherine kneeled to the ground and placed the dagger onto the compass. Clank! Sounds of a hundred swords surrounded them. This was followed by a light almost as bright as the sun. Both held no choice but to cover their eyes in fear of falling blind. They could only hope no other soul was nearby. Once the light calmed itself, a large wave formed and pushed harshly against the boat. In all its glory, the dagger had become the color of the compass. Ancient gold. She could spot no reflection. In response, she picked it up and stood up from her kneeling.
"What is this?" asked Daniel. One would question if he was looking at a ghost. He may as well have been. "
The compass had attached itself to the dagger as if either of these two objects were magnets. Katherine had never held something with such a lightweight in her life. Could a drop to the ground shatter this newly formed object? She would dare not discover this answer.
"There is a light forming out of this?" stated Katherine with a curious face.
Slowly and surely, the light that stood at the top, grew only larger. The greater the length, the more it seemed it was finding a path toward a certain direction. After a couple of minutes, it seemed that light had reached the castle. The dreaded place Katherine had escaped from.
Whilst Katherine had been deep in thought, several large waves had come to form and knocked against the boat only to push it from where it stood. Stability in Daniel had been lost and surely enough, his body fell into the water.
"Davian!" shouted Katherine quickly realizing he had fallen.
Not a moment too soon, she dived with the object at hold into the water and joined him only to realize just how cold it was. She could not help but shiver all while the sea began to calm itself back into a peaceful night. Daniel remained in good spirits.
"Might as well head for the shore," stated the boy with Katherine agreeing with a nod. "Shall we make it interesting and have a swimming race?"
Before a response could be given, he was swimming. With all of his strength, he was fierce with his arms that held might. The voices in his mind instructed him to keep going and not quit. Not once did he or his strength grow weary. It seemed that might be born to be a swimmer. Had all his labor prepared him for this? In a short time, he had reached the shore, breathed, and lifted his arms to shout in excitement and laughter with the wind blowing against him. It took Katherine a little while longer to reach the shore. Once she did, she was out of breath and needed to revive whilst collapsing to the sand as the object lay next to her.
"You certainly have much strength for swimming?" she stated once she revived her breathing and could not help but somewhat laugh. Her body and teeth quivered.
"I apologize. I could not help myself. The moment had called for it and I could not refuse." She had no answer, but a shiver. "A shame that your covering is wet. Perhaps we should take off our clothes before we find ourselves ill."
Katherine could not help but laugh. "As if I would remove my clothes in front of you. There is an extra covering on my horse. I think it may help us warm up a bit. Care to walk with me?"
As the girl walked, the object had been left on the ground leaving Daniel to pick it up. Following her to the horse, Daniel attempted to remove the compass from the dagger only to set a fast spark. His movement ceased with realization. A few times, there had been an attempt to remove the compass from the dagger the set a few more sparks. And with the mightiest of might, both of the objects were fully removed from one another. A fire consumed the dagger whilst light continued to shine toward the castle. Finding the nearest stick, he picked it up and set a fire. He did not hesitate to put the dagger into the water for it lose the great heated flames.
"Kassandra!" he shouted all whilst she continued walking without a care.
She turned around and noticed a great fire consuming the stick the boy held. A light went off in her head that caused the girl to gather multiple sticks. Never making it to the horse, no time was wasted in creating a circle of fire. Full of broken sticks, there was plenty of fire to last the night. Relief from the cold was in full sight and both sat down on the soft and warm sand. The two bodies came together and remained close together for extra warmth.
"This is nice," quietly spoke Katherine. "I do not believe I have ever sat in front of a fire before."
"Hmm," the boy responded. "I may have sat in front of a fire a few times in my life."
Neither of them dared utter another word. Katherine had been comfortable enough to lay her head against Daniel's shoulder as her eyes grew sleepy. Her heart felt at peace. All was well with her soul in that pleasant moment. The boy's body grew mushy knowing that a girl felt at ease around him and did not fear lying against him. His mouth could not help but smile at what was happening. It was nothing short of a miracle. Soon before long, they both fell into a great sleep for the rest of the night.
