"Are you sure you've got everything?" Mum pointed to the baby black velvet backpack on me, a concerned expression on her face.
I shoved an amused expression onto my face, "I just need my keys, camera and some money, besides, I have my phone right here." I motioned to the useful pocket sewn into my pair of high-waist black jeans.
"Alright," Mum sighed, "I'll still be in the area, so if anything happens, make sure you contact me!"
"Gotcha." I saluted before grimacing as the doorbell rang.
As if we were in a ballroom, Mum waltzed to open in, probably expecting her date. Instead, Jesse stood at the door with a smirk almost as typical as the leather jacket around his body.
Before she could help herself, she murmured, "Two boys in a week, my little girl has been busy."
I flushed red at the reference to Davis, astounded at how completely different the situation actually was. "Okay!" I cut her off from continuing.
"Mum meet Jesse." I signalled to the confused figure beside me as he outstretched his hand to shake hers.
"Nice to meet you." The two exchanged a brief introduction.
Jesse placed an arm around my exposed shoulder and then questioned, "Another guy?"
I rolled my eyes and pushed him away, fiddling with my off-the-shoulder white cotton top. "Woah, ease up on the acting Romeo, Sasha's the one doing Drama."
He laughed before smiling at my Mum, "She's in good hands, my sister and I won't let any other zombie–"
"Alright! I'll see you soon," I waved a hand at my mother before elbowing Jesse and pushing him towards the door, "Enjoy the date."
I could feel her bright eyes observing us both as we stumbled outside of the door, and my mind groaned to itself. I really didn't want her to be getting ideas about a guy, especially considering what this scene looked like.
That scene should have happened with someone I'd caught feelings for.
As I sat down in the passenger seat, a topic that had never I'd pursued before hit me. I'd never even had a crush before, especially at my age.
Was that unusual?
No childhood sweethearts, embarrassing puberty feelings or older boys.
"Earth to Zombie Girl!" Jesse shouted as his voice interrupted my solitary neighbourhood.
I cringed aloud at his disruption, "Yeah?"
"Are you good with sneakily eating?" He repeated himself.
I snickered, "I assure you, I probably invented that."
"I like that." He purred.
I winced, "God Jesse, you're such a flirt!"
He laughed and sped through the car park of our school, "Well yes, I'm a legend."
The vehicle came to a halt and I nearly bit my taupe lipstick in a wave of nervous emotions. This was my first time coming to a school event, it was completely unusual. Especially considering I was with Jesse, not every girl who had their vision pierced on him knew the definition of friends.
As I stepped out of the car and met the boy's eased brown eyes, I comforted myself.
Dos amigos, Ava. Dos amigos.
I held onto that thought as we entered from the back entrance of the theatre. The dim lights barely removed the sea of unfamiliar faces that dotted through the seats. My reassurance faded away in meagre seconds as Jesse pressed a hand against my back, gently navigating me to move, rather than awkwardly stand in the way of other people.
I blushed in embarrassment as we moved towards one of the front seats, attempting to ignore the uncertain gaze of strangers.
We took our seats and I slung my backpack off of me, placing it in my lap and eagerly taking out the borrowed camera from Photography. My nerves and insecurities around me dissipated as my eyes traced the astounding aura in the room.
I'd never been here before. That would be changing.
Our deep black seats were layered upwards like an auditorium, whilst the central stage had golden hues etched into the walls beside it. Elegant royal red curtains draped along the front, held together by glimmering gold threads. The lights were arranged over the ceiling, almost radiating warmth.
"Cool, isn't it?" Jesse murmured as I met his eyes that were trailing along the robes of curtain.
"Gorgeous." I agreed when he turned his face to mine.
For a second, it was as if he was scrutinising every aspect of me, and I flinched backwards, blushing in embarrassment.
"You're wearing makeup." He peered at my face and I internally groaned.
"Yeah," I gave him a short answer before snatching a gummy bear from the packet on his lap, "Courtesy of your twin sister."
I refused to acknowledge his complimentary hum by loudly chewing on the strawberry flavoured jelly. My attention turned back to the curtains, awaiting the beginning of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"I thought you invented sneakily eating." He accused, prodding my arm annoyingly.
I glared at Jesse, ignoring the blonde behind us who was eyeing the boy like a hawk. "And I thought you weren't a pest."
~
Sasha opened her eyes and sent a bewildered look to the boy beside her, "Oberon! I've had such a strange dream!"
Her genuine confused tone was persuasive as she continued, "I dreamt I was in love with an ass."
I smiled at her animated expression as Oberon began to speak, Titania was talented.
"Good, isn't she?" Jesse proudly read my thoughts.
"She's amazing." I observed before looking back at his hand that had snuck around my shoulder as if it was home.
I used my white flats to stomp onto his giant feet the moment his thumb swiftly began tracing a pattern.
Jesse bit down a yell and snapped his hand away to my glee, and I giggled at the sight before we were interrupted my a brief pause from the stage.
Our eyes focused onto the curtain as they drew to indicate the end of the scene, and the end of the play. A split second later, each actor and actress had lined up together as the stage revealed them.
I grabbed my camera, ready to take a picture of Sasha as the audience began cheering.
Lifting the lens to her, a loud whistle drew me away and I turned in wonder to Jesse.
His brown eyes shone in pride as he broadly smiled, whistling and cheering in support of his twin.
In awe, I focused the camera on his facial expression, allowing his eyes to be the central attraction. Before I could help myself, I'd already taken a shot of the amazing look.
God, was I a creep?
I bit my lip as everyone began piling out, swinging the camera around my neck and scanning across the swarm of people who were eagerly moving towards the exit.
In amusement, Jesse held his hand out as he called out, "Zombie girl is scared of cooties."
"Moron." I murmured softly before accepting the gesture as he pulled me through the shoves and barges of strangers.
Jesse and I emerged into the evening light as crowds of people departed out of the car park. The sky was dim with amber hues, hazy blue settling into the sky and foreshadowing the night sky.
We moved to his car in unison, leaning on the surface and waiting for Sasha to arrive.
"So," He turned to me with an unreadable expression, "How long have you kept the disease a secret?"
I sighed, the question was bound to come at one time or another.
"Why do any of us keep secrets?" I murmured wistfully.
Jesse shrugged, "We're scared of inevitable reactions."
I didn't expect someone, someone who played around as if the world sat in his palm, to speak so realistically. He was right, and I shadowed that with my reply.
"I found out a month ago, it wasn't really a secret. It was just difficult to acknowledge."
"You didn't want the pity act, hm?"
I nodded my head as the conversation snapped shut like a private book; Sasha entering the scene with a bright grin.
"Thanks for coming!"
I found myself influenced by her expression, "I'm glad I did! You were amazing."
The blonde blushed in pleasure, "Thank you!"
Jesse jerked his head towards his car, "Let's get going."
"Let me drive then," Sasha groaned at her brother, "You always do."
He rolled his eyes, "Fine," Looking back at me Jesse muttered, "Get ready for a talk show."
I raised my eyebrows as he took the back seat, then secured myself into the passenger seat.
Sasha kicked off her heels, starting the engine and yelling, "Sash the chauffer!"
Jesse leaned forward from his seat and whispered into my ear, "Get ready to drive through Wonderland."
I nervously looked back at his twin and then leaned back in the seat, pretty sure nothing worse could happen.
As she speedily reversed out of the parking, Jesse asked, "You drive, Ava?"
"Underage." I gazed out of the window, watching specks of people dissipate.
"When's your birthday?" He continued.
"May." I replied, not sure if they wanted the specific date.
"Cute, you're the youngest." Sasha observed.
"I could hook you up with a fake ID..." Jesse trailed off, realising that his sister was still present.
Before I had a chance to reply, she hissed, "I told you to quit being around them!"
"You aren't my mum." He quietly responded.
My eyes darted to the glassed window of the car, awkwardly sitting in the midst of a sudden upheld tension.
"Well at least I know how to act like one Jesse. Why are you so immature?" Sasha was angrily on fire, she didn't look like a force to reckon with.
"Why are you starting something now? Can't we just have a decent evening?" Surprisingly, he was the one with a calm tone.
"See? This is what I mean! You don't even take anything seriously." She groaned as the car halted at a light.
"Do you want me to start shouting out too?" Jess retorted.
I couldn't help but stay silent.
As swiftly as the argument had broken out, it subsided into an eerie silence after Sasha sighed to herself.
My only reassurance was, I wasn't the only one holding secrets.
The quietness was haunting as it lingered, and the only other presence was Jesse's deep breath fanning over the nape of my neck.
~
"You're sure it's okay being alone? I could walk back to my place later." Jesse cautiously asked as I switched on the passage lights.
"Don't worry," I shrugged, "I'm used to it."
"I'm sorry about what you overheard." To my shock, it was him who apologised.
I dropped my backpack onto the kitchen table and opened the fridge door, offering him a can of Coke.
"Honestly, it's not a problem. In a slightly psychotic way," I took a pause as I opened up my own drink, "It's reassuring that we all have our demons."
As I leant against the counter, he gave me a pained smile that almost reminded me of the last thing I'd seen from my Father.
It sent chills down my spine.
"Do you ever wish you could have just clicked a rewind button, but all too soon everything is too late?"
"Yeah," I thought to myself, "But I don't think it's too late for anything."
Our eyes flickered over each other for a brief minute, the cold metal in my hand threatening to slip.
He stepped closer.
"Really? Don't you ever make mistakes that haunt you? I've made so many, and Sasha hates them. But it's too late to stop."
He stepped closer.
"I've done things I'm not proud of, hell they still haunt me." I put the can of Coke down and traced his eyes, whilst the vivid image of lines spurted into my mind.
"Do you continue with them?" Jesse enquired, his voice retracting vibrations onto my skin.
"I'm pulling away." I confessed.
There wasn't space to step closer.
"Pull me away from my mistakes, Ava."
I gazed into his brown eyes, framed with lengthy eyelashes. His lips were parted slightly and his hair had been played with in just the right way. Jesse was gorgeous, and I hated to admit it.
"I'm a mistake."
In a single second the space between us had disappeared.
The rough upper surface of the counter that stood outwards had smeared into my back as Jesse's heavy frame towered against me. His fingers were seamlessly dancing onto my face and I could smell the bittersweet scent of cola that was hovering over my lips.
In a spur of hesitance, I met his eyes. Those pupils weren't focused on my eyes.
A shriek of noise exhilarated around us, startling an abrupt repulsion as the car horn radiated sound. We both sensed Sasha's impatience that hovered around us.
Jesse chuckled to himself, murmuring into my ear, "Thanks for the drink."
Before I could react, his lean body had disappeared out of the house, leaving me in a pit of confusion.
A/N: Just to clarify, they didn't end up kissing, rather he was intending to
What do you guys think of these two as a pair? I'm interested in your opinions of any characters pairings.
