chapter 32

"SARA!"

Sara shot awake with a start, immediately noticing that Callie's hand was clutching her own as she tried to calm her breathing. The Merlyn heir looked at her wife in confusion, running a hand through Sara's hair to calm her as she heaved.

"What happened?" Sara breathes, her eyes still adjusting to the darkness in their room before Callie leaned over and turned the lights on lowly.

"I think you were having a bad dream... involving John?"

Sara instantly stopped heaving as the confusion took over her brain. She turned to look at Callie in surprise, not sure if they were thinking of the same John.

"Constantine?"

Callie nodded, a small smirk on her lips as she fiddled with Sara's fingers. "I assume so, unless you've started to dream of John Diggle?"

Sara rolled her eyes, nodding silently to confirm that Constantine's name rang a bell but she didn't want to bother Callie with the contents of her dream. Patting Sara's arm, Callie knew that she obviously didn't want to talk about her nightmare from her silence and rolled out of their bed.

"Why are you getting up?" Sara moaned, pouting as her wife rummaged through their closet as she began to pick out an outfit for the day. Sara propped herself up on one arm as she watched her finally decide on a pair of ripped jeans, her old and faded blue Queen Consolidated tee and a pair of timberlands that Sara was sure Callie had begged Gideon to fabricate for her.

"I promised I'd go meet up with Ollie for lunch, remember?"

Sara hadn't remembered. Sure she knew that Callie was going for lunch with him at some point, but she had completely forgotten that it was that afternoon that her wife was departing for a few hours to meet up with their best friend for lunch. After returning from Earth-X, Callie had promised him that she would try and get back to Star City more to see him.

"Pardon the interruption, Captain, but you're needed on the bridge."

"Oh, come on," Sara groaned, flopping back down on the bed as Callie laughed from across the room, her fingers finishing lacing up her boots as she rose to smile at her wife.

"Don't keep them waiting, I'll be back before you know it."

_____

"So, Z and Amaya, you take the Time Courier to Billings, Montana in 1997. The Mona Lisa is about make a very special appearance on the Antiques Roadshow. Nate and I will pick up Einstein in the Ice Age, and you two are on the Jumpship to find and return a dog named Laika to the Soviet space program."

"No."

Sara stopped in her spot as she turned to face Mick who had refused her plan. The man usually was a little grumpy, but he didn't often disobey her wishes. Sara placed her hands on her hips as she narrowed her eyes at the man, already in a bad mood as it was. She had been having a killer headache since her nightmare and Callie being away wasn't helping her nerves.

"Excuse me?"

"I'm not chasing a Ruskie pooch."

"Uh, I could actually use Mick's help reforming the Fire Totem," Ray interrupted, causing Sara to rub at her head again before throwing her hands in the air and giving in. She didn't have the effort to have an argument.

"Fine. Nate, you go with Wally, and I'll go get Einstein alone," Sara said, winching slightly as she received another stabbing pain in her head.

"Mmm. You okay?"

"Yeah, do... I'm fine," Sara said as she waved them off. Looking around at them, she realised why they were all still hovering around the bridge. "All right, that's it. No snazzy send-off. Mama's got a headache."

Nate patted her on the back as they all began to head in their different directions, smiling softly at his captain as he moved out of the room.

"Even when you don't try, you still got it."

Sara wasn't so sure about that.
______

"Hey Gideon, why aren't the lights on?"

Callie asked as she stepped back into the ship, having used one of the Time Bureau watches she had nicked from Ava last time the woman had visited the team. She was sure the agent knew, but she was yet to confront the girl about it and Callie was sure it was maybe to do with her being an ex-assassin.

When Gideon didn't respond - and Callie was sure she heard a scream in the distance - she knew something had majorly gone wrong since she had left. Considering the jump ship was clearly still here when she slowly crept by it - she assumed the whole team must have been on board but it wasn't like them all to be so quiet.

Reaching the small armoury, Callie quickly grabbed a small dagger and one of Sara's breakable staffs before heading towards the bridge. Something was certainly not right about this all.

Turns out she was right with her thoughts because lying on  the ground, still as a corpse was Wally West. Rushing over to him, Callie quickly searched him over for any injuries before reassessing their surroundings. There was broken glass all over the bridge and she was sure she could even see various spots of blood dropped on the ground.

Swearing under her breath as Wally didn't respond to her, Callie quickly hauled the boy to his feet and threw his arm over her shoulder. She needed to get him to the medbay fast - and quietly to ensure whoever had attacked the team didn't hear her.

Luckily for her, they made it to the room without coming into contact with a single soul. Callie was even more worried by the fact they hadn't found a member of the team but as soon as she did find them, she began to wish she hadn't.

All of them were standing in the medbay, weapons at the ready as they heard her approaching. Nate let out a slight sigh of relief as he saw the assassin, all of the team knowing that if anyone stood the best chance against Sara in a fight it would be Callie since they had trained together for a long time now and had both been taught the same skills during their time with the League of Assassins.

"Oh thank god you're here," Amaya breathed as they took Wally from her, not noticing how Callie was instantly more tense once realising that the only member of the team not present happened to be her wife. "Sara's got the death totem but we think Mallus is possessing her."

They all went silent as they tried to make out the expression on Callie's face as she took in the information. She knew this morning when Sara had a bad dream that the woman was trying to hide something from her and she couldn't help but wonder if this was a sign she shouldn't have let go.

"Where is she now?" Callie asked, her voice calm and collected as her brain flickered into assassin mode. Everyone paused for a second as they watched the emotion drain from her face as she started to make a plan of action in her head.

"We aren't sure," Nate said, Callie's eyes pausing over Ray's bloodied and unconscious body before turning her attention back to the historian.

"All we know is the best chance of defeating a totem bearer such as Sara is for another totem bearer to challenge her, and since I'm out of commission Nate was about to get the Earth totem."

Callie nodded before pulling the dagger from her belt, everyone watching as she effortlessly spun it around her fingers with expert precision. Zari had never seen this side to the woman and she was beginning to wonder if she wished she hadn't.

"Well, lets go get you that totem then."

______

Callie wasn't sure when it had all gone wrong for her and Nate, but they'd been separated pretty easily by the possessed Sara.

Seeing her wife looking like... that, only made Callie want to rip Mallus apart even more. She was furious that some demon thought he could just come and interrupt her life after everything they'd been through in the past few months.

The rest of the team - including a bloodied Nate as she stepped over him - had warned her over the comms that one of the things that Death Totem Sara was seemingly capable of doing was making herself look like familiar faces from the dead to distract you. Callie wasn't sure who Sara would pick for her turn, but she knew there were plenty to chose from.

So when Callie rounded the corner and saw Sara herself standing at the end of the corridor, she wasn't sure what to think.

She no longer was shocking pale with dark circles around her eyes, but rather she looked just how she had that morning. Her hair was combed into soft beach waves, her smile breaking out across her face as she moved down the corridor towards Callie who refused to lower the batons in her hands. She knew this was a trick and she wasn't about to let Mallus win.

"Callie, it's me," Sara breathed, a childish grin on her face as she paused just in front of the girl. "You can put the weapons down now, babe."

"Don't call me that, Mallus," Callie snarled, knowing exactly who was in control of Sara's body. She maybe misjudged her idea of speaking back to a demon, especially as Sara instantly warped back into the pale and scary looking version of herself. Callie barely had anytime to think before possessed Sara's hand was clenched around her neck, hauling her into the air and taking the breath from her lungs.

Just as Callie felt herself get light headed, she was slammed to the ground before being punched repeatedly by the blonde.

"FIGHT BACK!" The deep voice roared from the body of her wife, the demon inside annoyed at how Callie was allowing this to just happen and not putting on a show for him.

The raven haired girl looked up at her wife who stood above her, fist raised as she readied herself for another smack to the head. Callie shook her head as she spat out blood from her mouth, her vision wavering slightly as she tried to focus on Sara.

"I'd never hurt you."

Mallus roared in anger again, continuing with another round of punches to the jaw. Just as Callie thought the next punch might be the one to knock her out, she heard the familiar sound of a Time Bureau portal opening behind her.

She didn't need to look up to know that the man who had began chanting from behind her was the one and only John Constantine. She wished his reunion with her and Sara would be on similar circumstances as their frolic in the 1970s but she was remarkably disappointed in that aspect today.

Warm hands that belonged to Ava Sharpe pulled her backwards and away from where John was trying to force Mallus out of Sara's body. Callie tried to bring herself to say thanks but the woman shook her head, knowing there was nothing needed to be said between them.

Callie could do nothing but watch as the body of the woman she loved continued to try and kill them all.

_____

Ava and John hauled Callie to her feet as they took off after the woman. Callie murmured a thanks to John for throwing her arm over his shoulder in support, but the man simply waved her off as Ava ran ahead and into the lab in front of them.

John and Callie managed to make it into the lab just in time to watch Mick shoot a fireball at the woman and finally knock her out. Callie had a lot of questions for that but she was too preoccupied with making sure her wife was okay first.

Pushing off John, Callie slid to her knees next to the unconscious Sara just as Ava ripped the death totem from her neck. Everyone looked to Callie expectedly, waiting on her to do something that would bring Sara back to them.

"Sara?" She called out, putting her hand on the blonde's cheek and checking for any response. "Come back to me, Sara."

When nothing happened, Callie clenched her eyes shut for a moment before taking a deep breath and gripping on to Sara's hand with her free hand. She wasn't about to let her wife get taken from her.

"Hey, hey, I know you're in there babe. Come back to me, Sara, please," she continued to beg, a little more desperate now. "I didn't come back to you after three years in Earth-X for you to give up on me so easily! When did a legend every go quietly huh?"

The team all stood around the room, waiting with baited breaths for something to happen as they watched Callie try and plead with the girl who was currently facing off with Nora Darhk and Mallus in her mind.

"I'm here Sara, I just need you to fight for me."

As soon as the words left Callie's mouth, Sara's eyes shot open to reveal the pitch black eyes that had been haunting the team for the past few hours. John reaches over, helping Callie to her feet and pulling her protectively away from the demonic Sara as the woman hovered in the air in front of them.

They all jumped in surprise as Sara dropped to her feet, her hair suddenly back in its familiar ponytail and her eyes and face back to normal. Everyone let out deep sighs of relief as she looked at her hands before looking back up and around at them all.

"You know I'll always come back to you," Sara repeated to Callie, a laugh falling from the raven haired girls lips as they shared a quick kiss before Callie motioned over her shoulder to where Mick was standing with a ball of fire floating in his hands.

"With a little help."

______

"Hmm. I should definitely come to your aid more often," John told Sara as he took a sip of the whiskey she had poured for them both. The third poured glass sitting beside them confirmed his suspicion that Sara was well aware Callie would come find them any second.

"Well, at this point, I might as well just make you a bed on the ship," Sara teased, although a piece of her wasn't kidding around. John would make an excellent addition to the team and she knew Callie and him got along like a house on fire.

"Hm, tempting," John sarcastically replied, having another sip of the whiskey before looking up at the thoughtful look in Sara's eyes.

"If you thought Mallus really would've freed Astra, you would have traded me, wouldn't you?"

"In a heartbeat. Yeah. Well, what can I say? I'm a nasty piece of work," he admitted, although Sara knew she would have done exactly the same had it been her and Callie in him and Astra's shoes. Their relationship might not have been the same type - but their bond was worth fighting for.

"So am I."

"You survived, love," John pointed out, knowing Sara wasn't fully over being possessed by the demon.

"For now. You know, there's a reason why I prefer to walk this path alone. It's, uh, so I don't have to share with anyone how lost I really am."

"But you're not alone, are you, Sara?" John pointed out, finishing his whiskey and going to lift Callie's glass that was sitting next to him. Just as he reached it for it, the glass was plucked up by another.

"Of course she's not," Callie interrupted them as she entered the room with a gentle smile on her face. "Not as long as I'm on this Earth."
