chapter 26
Callie happily strutted back on to the Waverider as she threw her bag down in the cargo hold. She would get round to moving it later but the strap had been digging into her shoulder for just too long.
Her smile only widened as Mick grunted a welcome back as she passed the man in the corridor. It was a massive improvement - it had taken the man so long to get used to having her back around again and she was glad that their slight friendship had began to return. The man was rare to give out his trust, but Callie knew that he had deemed her more trustworthy than some of their other friends.
Bumping into Zari as she headed towards her and Sara's room, Callie decided to pause and ask the girl why she was so hyped up.
"Hey, how was your visit home?" Zari asked, barely able to keep herself still from the idea that was bouncing around her head.
Callie smiled warmly at her, having heard from Sara that the two were trying to work better together now that they'd had their heart to heart about saving their siblings. Zari wasn't really aware of how Callie had also lost a sibling, but that was a story she would share with the girl another time.
"It was just what I needed. How's the head? Feeling any better?" Callie asked, turning the topic straight back to Zari. She was really curious as to why the girl was almost jogging around the ship.
"Feeling great! Fantastic! Ready to get out and explore the timeline!"
Callie didn't have a chance to ask what she meant because the girl took off again, heading straight for the ships onboard library. Shrugging as she raised an eyebrow at Zari's strange behaviour, she entered her and Sara's room.
Her eyes furrowed slightly as she noticed no sign of Sara. The woman hadn't been on the bridge either which was a little strange as that's usually where Sara would be found. Dumping her jacket on the ground and grabbing one of Sara's sweaters that was on the ground, she deciding to head to the kitchen.
The closer she got to the kitchen, the more obvious it was to her that things had changed in the few days she had been away from the team. Not only was there a burnt pirate hat on the ground - something she would need to ask about later - but there was a strangely irregular visitor speaking to Sara in the kitchen.
"You know what, Gideon? I think I'll have some more of your amazing French toast," the voice spoke, causing Callie to raise an eyebrow as she moved towards the entrance to the kitchen.
"You must've worked up an appetite last night," Sara's voice drawled out, making Callie's eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
She hadn't known that Sara had became friends with Agent Sharpe. A furrow quickly covered her brow before she entered the room, leaving behind a short huff as she crossed her arms.
"I hope that appetite is from pillow fighting and not pillow talking," Callie announced her presence, causing Ava to almost choke on the coffee that she had began to drink. The woman was aware that Callie had been trained by the league so was naturally a quiet person when she intended to be, but she wasn't expecting the sudden appearance of her new best friend's wife.
Sara laughed lowly, smirking at Callie who was fake scowling at the women. Moving forward instantly, Sara placed a soft but passionate kiss to her lips before pulling back and placing a light hand on her face.
"You know my heart beats for you," she joked, causing Callie to pretend gag and lightly push the blonde away from her. "Besides, Ava and I are friends now."
Callie shrugged, not having a single bit of insecurity about their friendship. Sara was married to her and if she insisted that her and Ava were only friends then she would believe that until the earth ended.
"Agent Sharpe, it's nice but also strangely uncomfortable to see you without your pantsuit," Callie informed the woman, sending a smile her way as she moved to help herself to some iced tea that Gideon had already began to brew by routine.
"You can call me Ava, and thanks, I think."
"No worries, Agent Sharpe," Callie replied, causing Sara to roll her eyes and smack the back of her head slightly as she made Ava shift uncomfortably from her right foot to her left as she tried to figure out if Callie was joking or was purposely acting cold to her.
"How was your visit home? Sara told me you had gone back to see family," Ava continued, trying to make herself feel less of a chill from the ex-assassin.
Callie smiled genuinely, all signs of coldness instantly gone. "It was just what I needed, I haven't seen my sister in a long time."
Just before Ava could say anything, they were all interrupted with Zari zooming into the room in a hyperactive state that mirrored how she had been when talking to Callie only ten minutes prior.
"Sara, can we take the Waverider to when Mount St. Helens erupted? I've always wanted..." Zari trailer off as she noticed Ava looking up from the kitchen table at her, an eyebrow raised in confusion. "Psych. That would not be a cool thing to do. This is, uh, a very important time vehicle. We we would never use it for recreational or dangerous purposes. Hey, Ava!"
Callie sniggered as she rolled her eyes, pushing dirty dishes out of her way as she tried to reach the artificial sweetener.
"Hey, Zari," Ava said, trying to hide a smile from her face as she watched the girl horrifically recover from her blunder.
Sara turned to look at Callie, reaching over and passing her the sweetener that she had been holding. Callie pecked her lips as a thank you before Sara noticed the dishes that the girl had been moving out of her way when she was trying to find the sweetener.
"This is weird. Why are there so many dirty dishes? Ray loves doing dirty dishes."
"Oh, yeah. I also don't hear him spewing the neurological benefits of putting butter in his coffee."
Callie shrugged, raising her eyebrows as she clutched the tea in her hand. "Gideon, where's Ray?"
"I don't know. But we are being hailed by the Time Bureau," the AI replied, causing the four woman to all share confused glances as the screen in front of them flickered to life. Ava seemed to choke on her coffee again at the AI's announcement.
"Put 'em on."
"Hello, Legends, and, uh, Agent Sharpe," Gary's face flickered on to the screen in front of them, the man's eyebrows furrowed in confusion as his voice pitched higher at the sight of his boss.
"What is it, Gary?" Ava snapped, causing Callie to chuckle slightly at the sight of the woman being utterly fed up with him. From what she had been told, Gary was a pretty clueless but lovable guy.
"Uh, t-this, uh, was just delivered to us. T-there was a-a Palmer Tech phone hidden inside with a message recorded on it."
Callie sat her glass down as she watched as the screen changed to a screen recording of the missing Ray. He was looking slightly panicked and she was instantly worried about his safety. Ray had been her friend for as long as she could really remember, even though he had almost meant that Oliver and Felicity didn't realise how perfect for each other they were - something that had been painful for Callie to witness.
"Hey, guys. If you're finding this, it's me, Ray, obviously. You've probably guessed by now that I have been abducted by the Darhks."
The four women all shared looks as they had in fact not guessed that in the slightest. Callie clenched up slightly as he mentioned the Darhk's, with Sara sending her a quick look reminding her now was not the time to do anything dramatic.
"Oh for god sake," Callie snarled, slamming her hands on the counter and causing them all to jump.
"Hey, when we see him, do we tell him we didn't even notice he was gone?" Zari checked with Sara, worried for her friend but also confused that they hadn't noticed he was gone sooner.
"Yeah, definitely not."
"The Darhks said that they'd let go of me when they were done with me. He is asking me if I want to see a Grateful Dead concert, which is really kind of weird. But look, you'll probably try to come after me and find me. If you do, he said that he'll kill me, so you know, please don't do that. He also said if Callie even thinks about trying to come after me he'll kill all of you too. Okay, bye."
There was a stunned silence between the four as Gideon turned the screen back off. They all turned slowly to look at Callie whose eyes had darkened and was scowling deeply at the three women standing in front of her. They all knew that there was no-one Callie hated quite as much as Damien Darhk except maybe her own father. The man had caused so much suffering in her life and no one really would ever understand how deep their hatred for each other went.
"I go away for three days and somehow you let Ray get abducted by the one person I literally have tried to kill - and once succeeded - various times?"
______
"Are you sure we should be looking for Ray after he told us not to?" Ava asked Sara, the Agent eyeing up Callie who was fiddling with an arrow and her bow in the corner of her eye.
Before Sara could even think about answering, a portal opened in the middle of the bridge. Rip Hunter and Wally West stepped out, smiles on their faces as they looked around at Sara and Ava.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"Ditto."
Before anyone else could get a word in edgeways, there was a quick flash of yellow as Wally used his speed to move. Raising his hand with a shocked look on his face, everyone's eyes were instantly drawn to the white and black feathered arrow that was clutched in his hand.
Callie stood poised with another arrow notched in her bow as she stood offensively facing the men. Wally gulped slightly before turning and muttering to Rip.
"I thought you said they'd be psyched to see us."
Rip let out a fake laugh as he lightly patted Wally's shoulder, his eyes bulging slightly as he noticed the anger radiating off Callie. The last he had known about the girl was that she was dead and buried 6 feet under ground.
"Look, I know what you're both thinking, but if you'd just let me explain," Rip added, before turning to look at Callie once more. "Miss Merlyn can you please lower your weapon?"
"No." Callie said. Everyone waited on her to elaborate but she said no more.
"If you're here to apologize for burgling the Bureau and and and humiliating Gary..." Ava started but Rip interrupted.
"Well, we actually did that for a good reason, because we have to stop "Mallusk"." Wally told them, a small grin on his face.
"Mallus!" Sara, Ava and Callie all groaned at the same time.
"And, yes, we know all about him. Sara basically met him," Ava said, not having the patience for the British man who was standing in front of them. He had let them down so many times that it didn't even matter anymore.
"And you're here, because the Time Bureau has finally come to its senses, or..."
"Ava and I are..."
"Working together, uh, independently."
Callie rolled her eyes, knowing that they didn't want Rip to know that they had became friends now. She knew that the man would try and ruin their friendship.
"Wally, it's good to see you. I remember you from Barry and Iris's wedding," Sara continued, changing the topic.
"Yeah, wasn't that so fun? It was such a beautiful ceremony. The hors d'oeuvres were, like, meh. And then, the Nazi invasion," Wally raved, his eyebrows shooting up at the end of his ramble.
"The what?" Rip muttered, confused at what had just left his new friends mouth.
"Hey, were you not fighting against us then? Iris told me you actually were good..." Wally asked, pointing to Callie who still had her bow notched and pointing towards the men.
"All right, you guys still haven't told us why you're on the ship. Atoning I hope," Sara interrupted his rambling again, worried that Callie would get bored and send another arrow his way.
"I should never have kept you both in the dark. The deaths of those agents and the return of Damien Darhk will haunt me for the rest of my days. But surely, you understand the gravity now of what we're facing," Rip tried to reason, but he was cut off by the arrival of the team.
The second Nate saw Wally he rushed over to Callie and pushed her bow down, shooting her an irked look before moving over to Wally.
"Nate, my brother."
"What are you doing here?"
They did some weird bro handshake as the rest of the team watched in confusion.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
"Any sign of Ray?"
"Oh, no, just another Grateful Dead end. I for sure got a contact-high."
"And I managed to swipe Jerry Garcia's glasses."
"Ohhh nice one!" Callie agreed, nodding as Mick held them up. Wally seemed panicked at the news, and in a flash of yellow he reappeared holding the glasses that Mick had stolen.
"Once a thief, always a thief," Wally said, seeming proud of himself for taking the glasses back off the ex-con.
Everyone looked around awkwardly before Nate cleared his throat and took the glasses back from Wally.
"No, we We allow light to moderate theft on this ship."
"We like to call them souvenirs."
"Oh."
