chapter 24

"Okay, the symbol that Nora drew was a time travel spell, right? So why don't we just cast the same spell and get out of here?"

"She was channeling the power of Mallus when she cast that spell. Not even I have that kind of juice."

"I do," Sara interrupted, her eyes bright with an idea as she looked between the three other heroes. Callie tensed up, aware that Sara was talking about doing something that could potentially end her life.

"Sara," Callie warned lowly, stepping slightly closer to the blonde as she watched her line of sight move directly to focus on John.

"You said that Mallus can use me the way that he does Nora. So you summon Mallus into me, I draw the rune, same as her, and we get to go home!" Sara exclaimed, swivelling round to look at Callie and see whether the girl was going to fight her on her plan. Callie stared back, her face blank as she tried to process what Sara was planning on doing.

"And what about when the demon is inside you, eh?" John pressed back, less keen on the idea than Callie was. He knew the extent of damage letting a demon in could do and he wasn't prepared to let his friend take that pain.

"You said I was strong enough to hold my own self," Sara noted, tilting her head as she tried to back herself up. John rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, looking between Sara and Callie for a second before focusing back on the blonde.

"Yeah, well, I was trying to seduce you," he muttered, rolling his eyes.

"Oh, please. I was seducing you," Sara interrupted his excuse, causing a scoff to come from Callie's lips as the dark haired girl crossed her arms over her chest.

"Maybe I was seducing both of you," she added, getting bored of this constant back and forth between the two blondes. Callie was tired, and she just wanted John to fix this without turning her wife into a human vessel.

Leo turned to look at them all with wide eyes, an exhausted look on his face as he looked in-between the three individuals. Throwing his hands in the air as he thought about what they were doing while he was almost killed, he snarled at them.

"I hope no one was trying to seduce anyone while I was about to be lobotomised!"

"You know, this is why I like to work alone," John told them, rolling his eyes at them all fighting amongst themselves.

____

"Sara, I don't like this," Callie murmured against the blonde's shoulder from where she had tucked her head into. Sara rubbed the back of her head slightly before grasping the raven-haired girl's face and pulled it back so she could look her in the eyes.

"I know, but if this is the only way to save us - to save you, then it's what I need to do," Sara told her, brushing a strand of hair out of the girl's face. "There's nothing I wouldn't do for you."

Callie nodded, squeezing her hand in silent agreement as John walked back into her line of sight, having just finished drawing a circle on the ground for Sara to stand in.

"Once you're under, don't let the demon coax you in any further. You must outwill Mallus and draw the temporal rune. Are you sure you wanna do this, love?" John checked as Callie slowly moved away from the blonde.

"You wanna stay here forever?" Sara asked, a soft smile on her face as she realised that the situation she was about to get herself into could ruin everything that she had spent her whole life working towards.

"The ash of a slain phoenix will hold Mallus within his parameter. And we'll, uh, hasten his wake up call by combining extract of hawk weed with the saliva of a damned man," John told her, before spitting into a small vile and smiling awkwardly at Callie. "Which, sorry to say, love, you'll have to ingest."

Sara didn't break her eye contact with Callie as she swallowed it easily and threw the glass container on the ground. Nodding briefly at John, she gulped before opening her mouth.

"Let's summon this demon already."

"Come back to me," Callie murmured gently, a smile spreading across Sara's lips as she heard the phrase that had almost become a mantra promise to them both.

"Always."

_____

"I hate this," Callie told them as a possessed Sara stood still before them. Her eyes were a red that Callie knew would stay with her forever, but there was nothing she could do if this meant their only chance at returning home.

"ITS WORKING!" John yelled as the symbol began to form on the floor at their feet. Callie jumped slightly, Leo reaching out and steading the girl as she started to feel a bit sick from watching her wife being possessed by a demon.

Everything around them shook and broke as the symbol continued to form on the ground at their feet, Callie trying to not take her eyes off Sara. She was so worried that she was going to lose the girl, that Mallus was going to be too strong to fight off. She knew that Sara had her own demons long before Mallus arrived and she could only pray that the assassin was able to fight her way out of this one too.

"Any time today would be good love!" John yelled, and almost instantly the symbol at Sara's feet lit up in a bright gold that had Callie blinking to try and look directly at it. John jumped in the air almost, realising that this was what they had been hoping for.

"Come on!" He yelled grabbing Leo and Callie and tugging them forwards toward a partially glowing Sara. Callie yelped slightly, wrapping her free hand around Sara's bicep as the glow covered their eyes and flashed around the room.

Feeling her stomach drop as the floor beneath her feet disappeared for a split second, Callie gasped as she stumbled to the ground. Heaving slightly as she lifted herself up, she noticed Sara on the ground shoot her a wink and a smile before closing her eyes.

"She bloody did it," John said, a grin on his face as he turned around to find Sara lying unmoving on the ground. Callie almost snorted as he fell to the ground beside her, lifting her head and muttering desperately for her to be alive. She knew the man was upset, but Sara did have a little payback on the man to play out.

"No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, don't do this to me. Sara, come on, Sara. Come back to me. Prove me wrong!"

Sara snorted from where she was being cradled, opening her eyes and chuckling. "You should really see your face right now."

John dropped her back to the floor, standing up as Callie and Sara laughed loudly at his fed-up attitude with the both of them. A small smile cracked on the corners of his lips as he realised that they were safe; back in the time where they belonged.

"Get up," he told Sara before looking at Callie with a teasing smile. "I'll be watching you Merlyn."

_____

"How many times do I have to tell you I'm fine?"

Sara huffed as John flicked another round of water in her face. Callie smiled warmly at Sara as the blonde moved around John to rest beside her, her free hand lightly balancing on Callie's shoulder. The raven haired girl moved her hand up to lightly pat Sara's, letting her know that she was okay.

"Well, somehow you managed to channel a demon of the highest order, and you didn't succumb," John pointed out, shrugging as he emphasised his need to make sure that she was completely okay and not still possessed by Mallus.

"Sara's strong. She's the strongest person I know," Amaya told John, with Sara turning her head to face John with a smug look. Callie laughed lightly before wrapping her arm around Sara and looking over at John too with a grateful look.

"It's appreciated, John," Callie softly told him, letting him know in her terms that she was grateful for the man making sure her wife wasn't suddenly going to do all full demon on her any minute.

"Hey, when Nora was possessed by Mallus, he seemed scared of my totem. He said that I was one of the six," Zari interrupted, a confused look on her face as she rested against the bridge table. Callie looked over at the new recruit, still not really had the chance to bond properly with her. The totem against her neck seemed to drag in the assassin's attention and she couldn't help but feel the hairs on the back of her neck rise as she looked at it.

"And that bastard doesn't fear much. If your totem gave him the frights, maybe these trinkets are the keys to stopping him," John explained as he looked over at the totem that rested around Amaya's neck too.

"So much for our anti-magic nanite gun," Ray sighed, disappointed that he wasn't going to get to use it. Callie smiled softly at him as she turned her attention back to Amaya.

"I only know about five totems. There's my Spirit, your Air, Kuasa's Water. And then there's Earth, and there's Fire. But could there be more?"

"I'll do some digging. I have, uh, numerous contacts I can draw on," Callie shot him a smirk as she knew exactly how he knew of these contacts.

"Well, this has been, uh, weird. Even for me," Sara noted, nodding slightly at John as the three of them all looked between each other with a slight blush on their faces as they thought about what had happened only hours before.

"Well, I'll be on my way, then," John said, striding out of the bridge.

Sara and Callie shared a look before both starting off after the man, promising the team they would return in just a minute. Callie watched as John paused upon hearing their footsteps, stopping and turning around to face the two girls with a gentle smile on their faces.

"Hey, before you go, I, uh I just wanted to say thank you," Callie started, a soft grin matching his own. Constantine raised an eyebrow slightly before Sara butted in.

"For helping me with Mallus, that is," she clarified, knowing that they all were thinking about their personal moment in the laundry room.

"Oh, of course. Uh, helping you with Mallus was, uh, good for me, too. If you ever need me to help you two with Mallus again, just give us a call. I'll be right there. Although, there are lots of people out there with very weird demons, and they all need my help," he clarified, as Callie and Sara smirked at him.

"Mmm, I understand," Sara mused, a smirk resting on her face as she placed a hand gently on Callie's hip. "And thanks for the shag, too. That was great."

She turned on her heel and fled the corridor, strutting away and swinging her hips as she went. John huffed as he let out a small chuckle before turning back to look at Callie.

"That's some lass you've got there," he joked, a soft gleam in his eyes as he watched her walk away with nothing but admiration in her eyes.

"I sure do," she smiled, before looking back to him. "You'll get there too, John."

The man shrugged before lighting his cigarette, turning and beginning to walk to the door of the Waverider. "Maybe, love," he mused, "but I have a lot of demons to banish before then."

So with that, Callie watched the man walk out of their ship, not to be seen until they next found themselves desperately requiring his help.
