chapter 11

"Hate to break up this fabulous reunion," Leo interrupted, his hand motioning in the opposite direction. "But we should probably go."

"Where are we going?"

"To our base."

"Your base? Who are you?" Callie asked, although she was pretty sure she knew her answer from her years of working against them.

"I was thinking exactly the same thing about you all." They could hear more gunshots and yells approaching them. "You might have to tell us on the way."

//.//

"So, let me get this straight," Leo started, his eyes narrowed as he looked between the group of heroes that he was escorting to safety and away from the Nazi concentration camp they had just escaped. "You're all from a different Earth and your doubles just so happen to be the leaders of the Nazi movement?"

They all looked between each other as the question hung in the air. They knew it sounded ridiculous but they could already see in Ray and Leo's eyes that the couple believed them. It had been a good hour of walking, but Callie could tell by the slowing of the pace to finish the story that they were almost at this base.

Hanging back slightly, she knew that Leo was casting her the occasional weary glance. The others seemed blissfully unaware of the situation that Callie was in - only herself and the two other heroes understanding that she wasn't likely to have a warm reception at all when she walked into the base.

Callie knew that the fact they even let her come was a sign that they were placing a lot of trust in her, but she didn't want to make the rest of her friends hear the things that she had done. To see the pain that she had caused the people they were about to meet. Watching Leo turn back to face her as they reached the building, the rest of the team watched in concern as he suddenly took a more serious tone.

"They aren't going to like this," he muttered, trying to keep his own anger out of his voice as he looked at the person that was responsible for so many of their losses. "Just try to stay back."

Callie nodded, ignoring the confused looks from the rest of the team as they all walked into the building. Oliver hung back ever so slightly, his hand gently grasping on to Callie's shoulder as he fired her his protective brother look. There would always be a lot of love between Oliver and Callie and she knew from one look at him in that moment that he had just realised why Leo and Ray weren't happy about bringing her with them.

"Callie, what did you do?"

___

After Oliver had been interrupted from his question, they found themselves all squeezing into a fit dimly lit elevator to take them to the main part of the base. The doors slid open, a very familiar looking room welcoming them into its depth.

A small smile rested on Callie's lips for just a short second as she felt that sense of familiarity at the place. While it was lacking the brightness and the neon green touches, she couldn't help but feel a little more relaxed in Star City - or at least, this Earth's version of it.

"I guess we're in Earth-X's Star City," Oliver said, his eyes following the exact same movement that Callie's had as they all walked further into the room. Callie moved to the side as Ray jumped past her, his striped pyjamas causing a lump to form in her throat as she was reminded of the situation that she was in.

"I have to say, that's one hell of a story!" He told them, his eyes almost twinkling with excitement as he looked around at the group gathering on the platform. He pointed at Barry, a laugh on his lips. "You're a speedster."

Barry nodded, returning a small smile to the man as he moved on to his next target. Looking at where Jax and Stein were standing he pointed between them in amazement. "Okay, you two turn into the burning man."

"We call them Firestorm," Callie dropped, her voice sounding softer than usual as she tried to make herself seem more approachable. She knew that it wasn't going to make any difference once the general appeared but she thought that she might as well try.

"And you're the good doppelganger of the Fuehrer?" Ray continued as he looked to Oliver. The man nodded, his arms crossed tightly across his chest as he tried to keep a clear vision of Callie in the corner of his eye. He remembered that she had told them that she had done terrible things, and he was beginning to think she really hadn't been lying.

""Good" might be an oversimplification," Sara joked, a small smirk resting on her lips as she shot him a playful glance. He titled his head sarcastically in response as Leo turned to face Sara with a sudden interest.

"You still haven't told us which Earth you're from," he purred, his tone slightly flirty. Callie tensed ever so slightly but she knew that he was just being playful after witnessing his and Ray's reunion earlier. "Clearly, it's not this one."

"We're from Earth-1," Barry said, instantly causing Leo to turn and look at Ray.

"Earth-1? Well golly."

"Am I missing something here?"

There was a pause as everyone looked to Ray. Callie already knew exactly what the man was going to say, already well aware of where he came from. She hadn't realised who he was until now but everything was coming back to her.

"I'm from Earth-1 too," Ray told them, a solemn look on his face.

"If you're from our Earth, then you know how we got here, don't you?" Barry's voice was dull, no hope in it. He knew that there was going to be a punchline to this - there always was with their teams involved.

"Yeah, I have a pretty good idea. I think you guys came through this."

Callie didn't mean to zone out, she really didn't. But when something silver caught her eye and she noticed exactly what it was she froze. It was like every single cell in her body had turned to stone as her eyes fixated on the silver helmet that was resting in a glass case at the side of the room.

Her feet moved towards the glass case, ignoring the concerned look that Sara and Oliver shot her as their conversation continued without her attention. Coming to a halt just as she got to the case, Callie noticed the slight red stain on the metal where the blood had splattered on it. Noticing the small medal that rested next to it, a further look also made her eyes catch on to a photo. A man, tall and strong but with a kind smile. His arms were wrapped around an unfamiliar woman and a small boy stood clutching on to his leg.

But this photo was simply the reminder of a man, for he was dead - and it was all because of her.

___

"General Schott?"

The words exclaimed from Alex's lips immediately brought Callie smashing into the present. Her hand fell from where it had been touching the glass, her body tensing up as she kept her back to the man that must have appeared in front of her friends.

"Yeah, and who are you?" His gruff voice broke the tense silence, and Callie knew that her suspicions were correct. This wasn't a man who would ever consider forgiving her for what she had done - that she knew now. She shouldn't have came here. She should have just stayed back at that camp. Callie felt her stomach grow heavy at the thought that the General would refuse to help her friends return home once he realised just who they had brought with them.

"New friends from Earth-1. They're on our side," Leo soothed the General to no effect.

"Except for the part where you guys want to blow up our only way home!"

"We don't exactly want to."

"Everyone we care about is on the other side of that gateway, imprisoned by Nazis. The Nazis that want to cut open my sister. We have to get back. Eliminate that facility, and you eliminate our only chance of saving our friends from your enemies," Alex tried to converse with the man, the recognition for him burning in her eyes as she stood towards the man.

A shiver ran down the red-head's spine as he looked at her with nothing but a simple hatred. She meant nothing to him on this earth clearly, and as she looked over at Callie, she wondered if the girl knew something about that from the way she was lurking in the shadows.

"I'm sorry, but we've been waiting for an opportunity like this for years. We cannot wait any longer. This is our only chance to separate the Fuehrer from his army.We are trying to turn this war around!" General Schott yelled, a fire in his voice.

"You are gonna leave our Earth at the mercy of the three psychopaths who have ravaged yours!" Oliver exclaimed, his voice loud and in control as he stepped closer to the General. The man took a second as he looked at Oliver's face before he began to get even more enraged at the group in front of him.

"Wait, why does this man look exactly like the Fuehrer I am trying to kill?"

"Look, fingerless gloves, all we are asking is for a little bit of time. Let us get into the facility and through that gateway," Sara snarled, not realising that Callie was in grave danger.

"The gateway is guarded by 30 Panzer Xils, 50 Sturmtigers, and 100 Schutzstaffel officers. Not the best odds, maybe."

There was no hesitation in Alex's voice when she spoke. "I'll take them."

"No, you will not. We are blowing up that gateway right now. Final order!"

As the man turned around, Callie knew that it was all over. It didn't matter that he had already planned to blow up the gateway for he would have changed his mind to do it even if he hadn't planned it at the sheer sight of the girl standing in his base.

He froze on the spot abruptly as soon as he realised exactly who the girl at the side of the room that was staring at her was. He almost seemed to shake for a moment, and before Callie could fully process what was happening she was being slammed to the ground in a full on tackle.

The shouts of her team were audible but she wasn't focusing on them. Grappling with the man who had slammed her body against the ground, Callie immediately froze her moments when the cold, hard barrel of a handgun was forcefully shoved against her forehead.

She could see her team being held back by other members of the resistance in the corner of her eye but there was nothing she could do. Looking over at them, ignoring that General Schott would have no reason to not pull the trigger she shook her head ever so slightly.

"Stop," she told them all, watching as surprise clouded their faces at her admitting defeat so easily. "This one is on me."

Winn snarled as he looked down on her from where he currently had her pinned. His gun moved slightly in his hand as he tightened his grip on the hold. Callie could see that his knuckles had literally turned white as a sheet from clutching on to the weapon in anger so hard.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't just end you here," he growled, pushing the barrel tighter against her head. Callie didn't look away, she just kept her eyes focused completely on his.

"I can't. You should pull the trigger," She yelled, the resentment at herself for what she had done flooding her body along with the pounding guilt and grief for the person that she had let herself become.

General Schott didn't need to be told twice. His finger moved, the trigger of the gun pressed by his finger.
