Chapter 10

It was still early. For Saturday standerts that means. For Casper getting up early wasn't really the problem it was more the fact that they we're doing a field trip to Deeztown. He only counted himself lucky that it wasn't for scaring but rather for research purposes.

Everyone was assigned to grab a partner (Thatch in Casper's case) and fill in a sheet of paper with a bunch of questions. None of them made sense of course but the ghost wasn't really in the mood for debating with Professor Burns right now. It was windy and wet, especially at the docs.

Half - time. Two weeks had passed and the only thing that really happened was that Thatch and Casper now spent the nights they used to spent alone with each other. Oddly enough it was quite entertaining to explain Thatch the mechanics behind 'Saw' traps and the lore behind gremlins.

„You eating your chocolate bar?" Ra yawned. „You can't tell me you're still hungry." Casper chuckled and as about to reach in his pocket. „We in fact will be eating it." Thatch hissed and looked at Casper with this expression. Since they had this date with Wolfie and Monaco he was insisting on the ghost finishing his meals or called him out infront of Casper's friends.

Casper was about to argue with Thatch but Ra already turned around and tryed to get Mantha into sharing. „I won't eat that crap." The ghost muttered while looking at the questions pretending to read them. „You will." The taller one answered drily. He could feel Thatch's purple eyes scanning him.

Professor Burns lifted the tension. „Students we'll now start our trip to deeztown. Please sit down with your assinged partner and I'll give you your starter point where we'll let you out. You'll have sixty minutes to fill out the sheet and meet at the usual spot. I won't tolerate late arriving. A few eyerolls everyone knew the time limit was pretty much irrelevant. Alder and Dash would rip his head off if he'd not take all of them back with him. (But only because Kibosh would rip their heads off).

Everyone stepped on the ship and found a bench to sit on. Thatch sat next to Casper. Scare School got smaller as well a the island it was standing on. The ghost's eyes followed the ship's reflection in the black water.

He crossed his arms to avoid the cold. „You want my jacked babe." Thatch suggested with an joking undertone. Casper shook his head. It was not the temperature actually or he wished it wasn't. „Ghost can't feel temperature." he thought to himself.

The ghost closed his eyes and leaned his head back so he could collect his thoughts. He hadn't been in Deeztown since the incident. This stomach feeling had been there since the day Professor Burns announced the trip. Something bad would happen.

Casper looked over at Ra and Mantha who were giggling. They hadn't spent time together as a trio since their relationship was official. He missed that. The ghost sighed, hoping if he read the questions on the paper for real this time, this feeling would go away.

These questions were about mating habits, as well as the offspring of humans. The ghost remembered why he hated Science so much. »How does the fleshie feed it's infant?« He roled his eyes. And leaned back again. Reading these was more depressing than everything happening in his life right now.

Casper shoved the paper into Thatch's hands who shoved back into the ghosts. „No you take the notes. You always make fun of my penmanship." The vampire seemed to make a joke. „Fine." Casper muttered folded the paper and stuffed it into his hoodie pocket.

The (fake) boyfriends were one of the last pair to be let off the ship. Their starting point had been the park. Casper and Thatch hid in a tree. The vampire dangling upside down in his batform.

The ghost sat on a thicker branch underneath Thatch's, filling the notes. Even though their task was it to answer the questions by watching humans the ghost just scribbled some half assed words. This task wouldn't be graded and most likely never to be brought up again.

„You know we could change positions by scaring these kids over there." Thatch suggested. No answer. The vampire sighed and roled himself down onto Casper's branch, all while turning back. „What's up your ass today? You weren't even complaining when I made fun of Flyboy this morning. And you always complain, that's what makes it funny!" he asked.

Casper looked at his pencil he once got from some building company who had tryed to renovate their house. His uncles had scared them away but they left the pen. „It's nothing." he muttered. „It's not nothing you look like your pet died or some shit. Come on talk about it." The ghost smirked drily. „Even if there was something to talk about I wouldn't talk about it with you." he joked, hoping he'd make Thatch angry enough to stop talking.

The vampire sat down normally, letting one of his legs dangle down from the branch. He leaning against the trunk and crossed his arms. „Yeah because your friends would listen right now." Thatch teased. „Hey! They would!" Casper hissed. „And why didn't they notice your eating habits or your sleeping schedule or maybe your general expression the last two months?" The ghost clenched his fist around his pen. „I'm not saying they're bad friends, well I kinda want to imply that, but they definitely weren't paying attention for a long time, or they're just stu-" The pen thrown against his head cut him off. „Shut up, they did nothing wrong. I can handle my problems alone!" Thatch was about to talk back as the pen fell down landing in the grass.

„Hey What was that?" Yelled a way to well known voice. Casper froze or at least he thought he did. His hands were shivering. From above they could see Jimmy taking the pen. Looking at it. What differed the pen from any other of it's kind was a sticker that Jimmy and put on it way before the incident. He narrowed his eyes. „Jimmy you coming?" Another boy yelled. „Yeah in a minute, we'll meet at the field." He answered not taking his look from the tree.

When his, probably friends, were out of sight he kicked against the tree. „Casper! I know you're up there! Show yourself coward." he hissed. Thatch looked at Casper who seemed to have forgotten how to breathe correctly. The ghost's eyes screamed at him to stay up there before sliding down.

The ghost's voice cracked: „Hey Jimmy-" before he was grabbed by the collar and pressed against the tree. Casper's pen fell into the grass again. „I told you to leave me alone! Why are you following me?!" the blonde boy yelled. „I'm not- I'm here because of school." the smaller one tryed to explain. „Stop lying it's Saturday!" Casper stuttered, searching for words. When a grey hand grabbed Jimmy's shoulder. „What the hell's your problem fleshie?"

Jimmy let go and turned around. „What do you want Thatch? Take over the world again?" Thatch didn't admit, that this hurt his ego, he wasn't proud of that phase in his life. „If you think you're important enough to be followed around you're wrong. School work, like Casper said." Thatch lifted the paper, Casper had layed it down of the branch before sliding down. „This is none of your business." Jimmy hissed. The two were almost the same hight, Thatch was a litte bit taller but Jimmy had grown a lot due to puberty.

Thatch seemed almost invested into the argument as if he'd care. „You're wrong this is none of your business so you better leave and join your loser friends before I'll beat the life out of your body." The vampire threatened. The two glared each other for a second before Jimmy walked off, pushing Thatch with his shoulder and walking over Casper's pen to break it.

The vampire looked after him before turning to Casper. He still stood there. He was looking at where Jimmy would have stood if he hadn't walked off. „So that's why you're in a bad mood." Thatch said with an awkward smile which probably was supposed to be understanding or something. Casper slid down along the tree to sit down. „It's not his fault." he muttered. „It really isn't. It's mine." he reassured. „I'll decide that for myself." Thatch clarified and sat in front of the ghost. He blue eyed one looked up carefully. He he rubbed his left eye. „I found out that Jimmy was dating this guy." Casper muttered. „He used to be a former bully of him so I didn't trust him and." his voice started shivering. „I was jealous I guess. And due to that I- I ruined everything." he sobbed. „Aw come on what could you have done to-" „I scared him!" Casper gasped out. Thatch left out a tiny laugh before realizing the ghost meant that. He began to explain.

Casper was looking at Jimmy and Norman from afar. Norman was talking about some super cool skateboard trick , probably. Casper's knowledge about skateboarding didn't go far beyond some Tony Hawks quotes and things Mantha had explained to him. Anyway. Jimmy hadn't told him about this. All of the sudden he'd become distant. His friend had become so secretive since Highschool started.

Norman was climbing onto the ramp while Jimmy was watching from down below. It wasn't the fact that Jimmy was dating his bully, or that he had less time for his dead best friend, well it if the ghost was honest with himself it was (partly!), but still he could have told him. Norman was flexing, saying something so funny that Jimmy couldn't help but burst out in laughter.

Urgh how funny could some bully be huh? Then Norman went on to do his trick. That was Casper's chance. »Jimmy« He hissed. »Jimmy« He repeated. No answer. But Casper knew he could hear him, his friend had flinched.

He sighed, determand. If he'd turn invisible he could talk to Jimmy. Sure there was the chance for Norman to notice him but. It was a small one. Norman was bussy with his stunt. Here we go. Casper turned transparent and flew next to Jimmy. »We need to talk man« He insisted. »Casper what the hell are you doing here?« Jimmy hissed. »We need to talk.« The ghost repeated. »Go away! I'm on a date.« Jimmy wispered. »That's what I wanted to talk about, why didn't you tell me you hook up with Norman, this has been going on for multiple weeks.« Casper insisted »I would have told you that later. Now leave!« »Oh later when you died of old age?« the ghost asked sarcastically. »I said fuck off!« »And I said I want to talk!« Both boys sounded more aggressive than they had planned to be. Casper even turned visible from the rush of emotion.

Before any of the boys could have said a word they heared a crash and a scream. The rushed to the ramp. »Oh my god Norman are you okay?« Jimmy asked. The taller one was groaning. »Wait let me help you-« Casper said before getting cut off. »No! This is all your fault!« Jimmy yelled. »What no- That wasn't my inten-« the ghost tryed to say. »I don't care I told you to leave. I don't want to see you again.« Jimmy became oddly emotional. Casper could see in the human's eyes that he meant it. Every word. He took a deep breath before poofing off.

Thatch caught the sobbing ghost off guard by laying his hands on his shoulders. „Okay calm down for a second. You're telling me this guy fucked up some stunt and now your dump friend is angry? Last time I checked people fall of skate boards constantly. Not to mention that fleshies have weaker bones, brains, organs, well they're just weaker in general." Thatch rambled. „That's not the point. You weren't there I scared him so much that he-" „You couldn't scare a fly man. He could have been scared of anything or just suck at what he was doing. What even makes you so sure he fell because of you? Did he point at you?"
„No-"
„Did he talk about ghosts?"
„No I..."
„Did he scream before breaking his weak ass bone by falling?"
„No..."
„See no big deal, not your fault problem solved you can eat normally again." Thatch concluded.

„You don't understand! Even if it's not my fault that he fell, I risked it. I am a terrible best friend and person." The ghost insisted. „Well you aren't a person you are a monster. And that's the only thing you're really terrible at. If this Jimmy guy can't keep his friendships and relationships together that's his own fucking problem." Thatch explained. „That's not-" „Listen, you were jealous and angry because your friend didn't tell you what happened. I was jealous and angry when Dummy and Slither did that. It's okay to get emotional or not be in control of your emotions for once in a while. From seeing you've been bottling up all the time. It was obvious that this would happen one day. One way or the other. If Jimmy can't handle you at your worst he doesn't deserve you at your best." Thatch had to clear his throat.

The vampire was a little embarrassed he never had talked so much, especially with Casper, and it even was somewhat nice. „We should get back man, I don't want to run late." he lied, he couldn't care less about being on time but his partner probably wasn't able to do anything for the rest of the day.

Thatch got up and lend Casper his hand to help him up as well. They walked back, pretty slowly. It was still windy it was almost autum after all. „Thatch." Casper muttered. He turned around. „Thank you, thank you for listening even if you didn't have to." he smiled. The vampire flinched he turned to Casper immediately. „If you tell this anyone I will kill you." he hissed. The ghost laughed now. „I know." The taller one smiled a little before they continued walking.

„Thatch?" Casper asked again. „What now ghost boy?" he muttered. „I know it's embarrassing to ask and all that but... Can I have your jacket it's really fucking cold."
