• Chapter 10 •

"We come to love not by finding a perfect person, but by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. "

Noah

Tossing and turning, I couldn't fall asleep. That kiss. I couldn't stop thinking about it. It was short and sweet. Maybe I'm overthinking the whole situation but I think she didn't want to kiss me and even worse it was her first kiss. Her first kiss was with her fake fiancé. I feel miserable for doing that. Although she did kiss me back so if you think about it, I am not the only one at fault.

I almost called her then stopped myself and tried to fall asleep. But I couldn't sleep. So I called my sister at 1 am in the morning. She's always been there for me and even though she's extremely annoying, she still manages to help.

"Why the hell are you calling me now?" I could hear her from the other end.

"Greetings to you too," I laugh.

"My sleep. My precious sleep," I hear her mumble.

"I can't sleep," I sigh.

"But I can."

"Lotte." Ever since she was born, I called her Lotte which is the shortened version of Charlotte.

"Noah."

"Nevermind, good night."

"It's her, right?"

"Who?"

"Your fiancé. Isn't she the one making my brother all nervous?" I could hear her laughing.

"It's not her, I mean, kind of."

"Knew it. Don't be scared. I think Mum and Dad will love her." I thought about that. Mum and Dad are going to be so happy I chose her and I smile at the thought.

"Won't you like her?"

"If she's not a bitch like the other girl. What was her name? Ellie? Oh yeah, elephant."

"You're going to love Lexy. Just wait. And thanks, now I can sleep peacefully knowing that you still call my ex, elephant."

"Good night," she laughs and I cut the call.

Lotte knows me so well that it's kind of scary. She knew from the start that Elle wasn't good but I refused to believe her. And when she broke up with me, Lotte comforted me. But I still hate Lotte. I laugh thinking about it and slowly drift off into a deep sleep.

Grabbing my keys and I'm out the door. I was planning on getting the snacks beforehand but now that I think of it, I'll go to the grocery store with Lexy so she can choose what she wants.

I knock on the door and wait as she opened the door. She looked nervous and that made me uncomfortable so I laughed, "Let's get going!"

And she slowly grinned, "I'm ready! You can wait inside while I get my suitcase."

I reject that offer and decided to wait for her outside. I could hear her struggle with the suitcase so I jog over inside and carried it for her. She was convincing me that it was fine and that she can do it on her own but I wasn't too convinced when I saw her almost tumbling over because of how heavy it was.

After putting the suitcase in the trunk and moved towards the side of the car door and opened it majestically while smiling showing off my charming smile. I am not joking when I say I've gotten out of trouble because of my smile.

"Chivalry is not dead," I announce as Lexy gets in the car with a Tupperware container.

"I wish it was," she laughs as she recalls that day when I took her to the restaurant and she was rambling on and on about why chivalry should die.

I crack a smile and walk over to my side.

We drive for over an hour while having small talks and silly debates like why women's pockets should be bigger. She was very serious when she was putting forward her points on the case and I couldn't help but chuckle.

That's when it came to me that I don't know much about her. I don't even know her favourite food like how the hell is anyone, especially my parents going to believe me when I say that I'm going to marry her.

"Can we play a 'Get to know me' game, where we ask like 10 questions to each other because I don't know shit about you?"

She furrowed her eyebrows as she thought about this. She finally blurted, "Okay," after she weighed down the pros and cons probably.

"And if you don't want to answer the question, you can say 'pass' but that means the other person gets to ask you one more question," I respond and you can hear her sigh in relief. "You can start," I continued as I took a small glance at her.

She thought for a moment before asking, "What is the craziest thing you've ever done and would you do it again?"

"A few years ago, on a fine spring morning, my guy friends and I decided to go bungee jumping. It was the most exhilarating experience ever and I would totally do it again." From the corner of my eye, I could see her jaw hanging open as she stared at me as if I have two heads. I laugh then I get serious when I ask, "Do your parents know that you're doing this?"

She stared at her palms as she spoke, "No. It's a long story but I left home a few years ago. I have a sister and sometimes she calls but we don't have that connection anymore. We can't even be called a family. I hate it."

My eyes widened and my heart skipped a beat when I took it in. Lexy went through a whole lot. As though by instinct, I put my free hand on her knee and squeezed it.

We stopped the game there and just spoke about some random things.

I decided to take a quick break and parked the car on the side and Lexy finally opened the Tupperware to reveal a beautifully made cake. It was pastel yellow in colour with lemon slices covering the sides. She proudly explains, "This is an elegant lemon thyme cake, with alternating layers of lemon curd and vanilla buttercream, and then decorated with rich golden icing, candied citrus and sprigs of mint to top it off."

"Wow. It looks amazing," this is the most delicious looking thing ever. Lexy gave me a slice and she carefully watched me as I tasted it. Giving it an experimental bite, I was surprised to find how easily the spongy layer gave way to teeth and nearly gasped when my taste buds practically sang under the tangy flavour. It was assaulted under as lemon curd oozed into my mouth. Almost immediately it was followed up with a nutty crunch from what I could only guess were thinly sliced almonds. It was unlike anything I had ever tasted before.

"This is absolutely delicious. How come you didn't tell me that you were this good at baking?"

She blushed and mumbled, "We haven't really talked a lot."

"I guess we will change that during this trip," I grin from ear to ear.
