Every Time It Comes To This
I was probably the only one in the restaurant dressed casually.
The Duncans had decided that the perfect place to go for dinner would be some beautiful five star restaurant, and of course they were all dressed for it since Mrs. Duncan had a work banquet in a few hours.
The only person that seemed to be dressed almost as casual as me was Max, and of course he wasn't getting any comments or judgmental looks from it, despite the fact he kept saying he should be.
"Let your hair down, sweetie." Mrs. Duncan said, obviously realizing the way people were looking at us, "You're not at soccer practice." I could feel warmth spread through my cheeks as I reached up and pulled my high ponytail out, my hair falling in waves over my shoulders.
I saw Max stare for a second, then look away quickly, as if he had been caught watching something he shouldn't have.
"She's beautiful, isn't she, honey?" I looked up to find Mr. and Mrs. Duncan both grinning at me. I forced myself to return the smile and looked down at the menu.
"Any recommendations?" I asked. Mr. Duncan went on and explained multiple Italian names that I could hardly understand, never had I been so happy for pictures.
Once we had all ordered, Max's parents both started throwing questions in my direction. From where I was thinking about going to college to how practice was going, and finally to my brother moving out and my parents' issues.
When I turned to look at Max, I blinked in surprise. He had disappeared, and his parents were only starting to notice now.
"Where'd he go? Oh, David. Should I-"
"I'll go!" I offered, standing up. Mrs. Duncan frowned before slowly nodding and watching me swerve through empty tables and out toward the front of the restaurant. Max was sitting outside, his face buried in his hands.
"Hey, you all right?" I asked, wrapping my arms around myself and rocking back and forth on my heels. He shook his head, not looking up.
"I fucked up, Quinn." He said. I moved closer, trying to catch whatever he was whispering under his breath.
"What? Max, if this is about us-"
"No, Quinn. I seriously fucked up, big time." I only stared down at him, trying to take in the worry look in his eyes.
"What'd you do?" I finally breathed out.
"Jayden is on his way to pick you up and I want you to stay with him." I shook my head automatically, my eyes wide.
"No, Max. Why? I'm not going with him, he'll-"
"I told him you wanted to see him, and that's what you're going to have to do." I opened my mouth to try to fight him again, but he had already started rolling his wheelchair back inside.
"I already hurt her, I'm not going to hurt you too."

I tried to find a way out of letting Jayden take me back home. I tried to talk the Duncan's into letting me walk, but they refused. They said I'd freeze to death, and when I tried to suggest a cab or UBER, a whole new wave of fear crashed over me.
So I ended up standing outside, my jacket wrapped tightly around myself as I waited for my ex boyfriend to pull up, probably with Lex.
I felt a tight knot formed in my stomach when I saw a familiar black Ferarri pull up in front of me.
"Q, babe? Is that you? Come on, it's freezing." I sent a quick glance at the restaurant over my shoulder, my mind racing with a million reasons why Max was acting the way he was. It didn't matter how hard I tried, I couldn't come up with a real answer.
I turned my phone all the way up in my pocket and slid my phone on to my brother's contact and climbed into the back seat, coughing at the smell of pot that lingered in the car.
"Where too, beautiful?" Lex asked, rolling around and smirking at me from the passengers seat.
"My house." I whispered, my hand gripping my phone tightly. Jayden snorted, laughing.
"Oh come on, Quinn. Let's go back to our place for a while, we can-"
"Take me home." I cut him off, making sure to let anger seep into my voice.
"Fine, okay!" He held his hands up in surrender before checking the mirrors and pulling out. It took me about five minutes to realize that we had taken the wrong street and were going in the opposite direction of my house.
"Jayden, take me home! I'll call the cops." I showed him my phone, but he only laughed again.
I could feel my heart start racing as we pulled into the darker streets of downtown, my stomach twisting into an even tighter not. I hit my brothers contact and brought the phone to my ear.
"Yeah, Q?" He grumbled, sounding exhausted. I opened my mouth to say something when Lex reached back and ripped my phone from my grip, shaking his head.
"No, hun. Don't worry, it's me." I tried to grab at my phone.
"Austin!" I screamed, just as Jayden slammed his finger against my phone and ended the call. My eyes darted around the car, trying to find something to hit one of the boys with when they parked the car.
This wasn't the first time that Jayden had done something like this. A year or so ago, we had been heading back to my house and he'd made a detour back to Lex's. I don't remember exactly what happened that night, but I'm not sure if I want too.
"Don't look so scared, Quinn. We're not gonna hurt you, babe." Jayden said, catching my eyes in the rearview mirror.
"Then give me my phone back." I growled, reaching for my purse. I grabbed it before Lex could and let out a shaky sigh when I found my perfume bottle in it.
I immediately grabbed at the door when the car was parked, darting out of the car without a second glance behind me.
I was going to yell at Max the next time I saw him, or maybe I wouldn't say anything at all. This was his fault, for making me go with-
"Don't run away, baby girl." Jayden whispered in my ear, sliding his arm around my waist, "You're too beautiful to be walking these streets all by yourself." I glanced around us, relaxing against him. He was right.
I could see homeless people walking around, shouting and cat calling after the women that were prancing around a blocks away.
"Come inside." I let Jayden lead me back to his house, my mind racing with ideas to get out of this mess unharmed.
"You know, Q. I don't remember you being so feisty." Lex joked when we walked into the dark house. Jayden kept a hold of my hand until we were in the kitchen and had turned the lights on.
"Sit, I'll get you something warmer to wear and-"
"I'm fine." I answered, crossing my arms over my chest, "I just want to go home, Jay." I gave him a pleading look, hoping that for a second he'd come out of his drug haze and would come back down from his high.
"I want a lot of things too, but we can't always get what we want." He grabbed a beer from the fridge and tossed it at Lex, who caught it and grinned.
"Jay, please. I just want to-"
"I'm not taking you home so you can fuck that disabled freak, Quinn. You deserve better than that." I bit at my cheeks so I wouldn't explode.
"If you want a good lay, I'm right here baby." I stared at him in disgust, my eyes on the phone that Lex was scrolling through.
"Look, Jay. I really need to get home, I-" Before I could get another word out, Jayden had me pinned back against the wall and was hovering over me.
"You're not going home right now, Quinn. I have other plans." I swallowed the last bit of courage I had and leaned back against the wall.
If Lex hadn't taken the phone Austin would have. . .
Austin! He had taught me self defense, he had told me what to do. He had promised if he weren't there, it would work.
"Catch him by surprise." He had said, "Always go for the bal-groin if you can. It'll hurt them a lot more than let's say, the cheek."
I pushed myself off the wall and against Jayden, pulling his face down so it was only inches from mine.
"There's my girl." He whispered. I brushed my lips against his, my stomach churning.
"I'll never be your fucking girl again." I brought my knee up and kneed him as hard as I could. He backed away, hunched over long enough for me to dart toward the door.
"No you don't." Lex tangled his arms around my waist, restraining me from kicking.
"Put her in my room, Lex. Now." I squirmed again in his grip, but found myself sitting at the edge of my ex boyfriend's bed again.
I had just enough time to stand up when I heard the sound of a police siren outside of the house.
