What's the point of wishing, if all it brings is misfortune?

That's what I've wondered, ever since the day I quit trying.

And now, look at me, wandering the streets in search of a purpose whilst talking to myself thinking someone will hear me. Someone with the answer, of course.

4 years ago-

 I want to walk alongside her.

I want to walk alongside the girl standing by the coffee shop across the street, her laughter filling the air and her blond locks flowing with the wind.

"I wish she'd stop leaving me..."

I trotted out of the school garden and took my place near the middle of the classroom. Students scurried in; five minutes of class had already passed. We sat in wait for a few minutes and many groaned when they realized that our teacher was going to be late. Again.

-after class-

I exited the school building and was welcomed by loud sirens and indistinctive chatter. As I approached my brother and his circle of friends, I noticed that their faces were etched with worry. "What's going on here, Natsu?"

"'It's bad, brother. A senior, just got critically injured from a car crash. Ambulance still hasn't arrived yet and by the looks of it, she'll be dead if they take too long."

Curiosity overtook me. "Who?"

"Hmm, Mavis... uh, Vermelon, I think."

I felt my heart rate accelerate and fire boil up. There was no way my brother just insulted my crush's last name. "Vermelon? You don't happen to mean Vermillion, do you, Natsu?"

"Vermillion? Oh right! Yeah, sorry, I meant Vermillion."

Waves of emptiness never miss me. They push right through, merciless. 

Six days ago, at precisely 2 p.m., I got a call. To say it shocked me was certainly an understatement; aside from my brother - who lost his phone, again - I was never close to anyone. 

"Hello? Is this Zeref Dragneel?"

"Who is this?"

"Lucy. Lucy Heartfilia. Your brother never mentioned me, did he?" Natsu knows a girl?

"No, sorry."

"Anyways, Natsu though it would be a wise idea to call you and inform you about my cousin." Her cousin? Ha. I wouldn't care unless - no, it couldn't be. 

"Your cousin?"

"The name Mavis ring a bell?" I held back the urge to scream. 

"Y-yeah, how is she?" Relief washed over me when Lucy didn't seem to have noticed my sudden sttuter.

"Zeref, they pulled the plug."

"What?" I requested her to repeat her words as I felt deaf.

"They said there was no hope of her return and pulled the plug. I'm-"

I hung up the second those words left her mouth and hit my head against the wall.

[the thing he didn't find out was that she would never run away from him as a corpse...]
