This was it.

Just a glance or two, - maybe twenty - but it was worth it. Waiting for the thirteen years she knew of it's existence and even more the unheard wonders it could contain was worth it.

Her father's speech translated to nothing but blurs of words as the excitement continued to churn inside her. The only word she could comprehend was a "you" and a "go"; to which she swam rapidly out of the castle, and up, up, up. 

She exhaled as she felt unfamiliar cold emptiness hit her face. Her hand instinctively reached up to caress her cheek, but then the feeling hit that part of her, too. She dunked her head underwater and swam in a small circle. It felt good.

Once again, she emerged from the surface, this time ready for the feeling of emptiness touching her.

As she swam forward, a beige block of land, she assumed, as her father had told her stories of the creatures dwelling on it, and had described it as something floating on the water.

Creatures that didn't look too different from mermaids were retreating farther and farther away from her sight. But one just - stared.

Right at her.
