Chapter 18: 1999 pt. I
Lucy's POV
Mother continues stuffing her bag of clothes and foods. She then looks around and grabs camping materials. Seeing it full, she pats everything, looking like she was wondering of what she could be forgetting. Before zipping the big grey bag she has, she brings a brown and rusty book. Seeming as old as the Dragneels themselves. After stuffing the ancient looking book in, she zips the bag as quietly as possible, not wanting to awaken Zeref. She then grabs it and wraps it around her shoulder, looking around the place silently. Her eyes seemed uneasy as her lips kept quivering. She lays her hand on her shirt and pulls it softly.
-Lucy: "I don't understand... What could the emergency be that she needs to drop her duties? This is what we're born into, meant to do. Why is she just gonna stop and run away?" I ask with a hint of anger rising. I grip Gray's hand tightly, wishing it to be Natsu's more than anything. I miss the warmth and playful insults he'd give me. The way his toothy grin lightens up the mood. Just one more year Lucy.
-Gray: "You'll understand everything Lucy," He says as his thumb rubs my hand softly, making my tense self calm a bit. I smile to him and nod as we follow mother out from the door. She was barely making a sound with each step, thank goodness. After the battle him and Natsu had, I'd be terrified to awaken him by trying to run away.
The question is, why? What could possibly be so terrible that has happened between my mother and father that Zeref cannot find out? And if he does, they're both "goners"?
She now walks towards the house's balcony and looks down, seeing my father signaling for her to come along. She throws him the bag and jumps off the balcony, into his arms as quietly as possible.
-Jude: "You ready?" He whispers, for her to respond with just a nod. You could tell she wasn't happy with this decision. They start running quietly throughout the tropical forest, very careful to not step on any twigs to snap. Being as far as they could be, Jude looks around warily. Once he sees that no one's around, he brings out the legendary maleficus' book and searches quickly through it until he arrives at a specific page. After finding it, his eyes shut for about five seconds, and when they open, they reveal the eyes of someone communicating with our ancestors. He raises his fingers and does odd movements with them, also revealing runes around them.
"Ut ad portum salutis nobis. Nos mos grow una est et pro quo resurgens Conditor Nos pueri champion. Take nobis. Take nobis."
As he's finishing the spell, he grabs my mother's hand until they disappear in thin air, leaving blue colors behind.
-Lucy: "Where'd they go?!" I shout, quickly moving my sight towards Gray impatiently.
-Gray: "To a cabin, their safe haven."
-Lucy: "Explain to me what is going on. Why are they on the run? Why are they goners if Zeref finds out? Does my mother love Zeref and Jude--"
-Gray: "Lucy! Stop it. You will see. I promise. I told you to be patient." He says, making me realize how stupid I must've sound.
Patience Lucy. Gray would never leave you in the dark...
-Lucy: "I'm sorry. What are we gonna do now?"
-Gray: "1999. The day before the disaster."

1999
As I open my eyes, my sight sets upon a cabin. Looking so family friendly. I walk around looking at the place, feeling the warmth of it wrap around me. It was nice. I begin to hear unfamiliar cries. Baby cries. I scrunch my eyebrows and walk towards the sound. As I enter the room, my hand tightens it's grip on Gray's. There, I saw my mother nuzzling a blond haired girl. She seemed about a month old or so. But as I get closer, my heart begins to shake.
-Gray: "Do you recognize her?" I stay quiet, feeling a knot in my throat along with my eyes bringing tears slowly. I couldn't speak. I was literally speechless.
-Lucy: "That's why they left. Because of me."
-Layla: "You're gonna make history Lucy, I believe in you. And I always will." She says softly before kissing the girl's forehead. My forehead. Causing my baby self giggle and stretch my arms out to her. As we witness the mother and daughter bonding, we hear footsteps come along roughly on the cabin's wood.
-Jude: "Layla, I've done the hunting. So it's your turn to cook dinner and leave me be with the babies." He says before coming towards my baby self playfully and stealing her away from mother. I smile at them, feeling the love already. Until realization slaps me. My eyes widen and my breath hitches.
Babies?
-Layla: "Of course, you left it in the kitchen?" She asks as she stands and makes her way through the door. He nods and puts my baby self back into the crib, bringing out another baby. A boy, who looks exactly as me.
-Jude: "Hello there handsome." He says as he wraps the boy around his arms. As he does look at the baby boy, he smiles and does random hand signs making the child laugh playfully until he's interrupted with cries. "C'mon Lucy, we've gotta divide the attention with your twin brother Lucky." I feel my heart sink down into my stomach.
A brother. A brother no one ever told me about, nor even gave me hints of his existence. Seriously?
The mixture of anger and sadness mush up in me. Making me feel overwhelmed. As I begin to breathe heavily, the tears in my eyes finally drop.
-Lucy: "Where is he?" I ask Gray. Looking down onto the floor. But it feels as if I asked the wall. No words sound. And the silence is an anchor, pulling my heart even deeper. The anger begins to take over, and I tighten my grip on his hand. "Answer me."
-Gray: "Just continue surfing through the memories Lucy--"
-Lucy: "Tell me right now! I need to know right now!"
-Gray: "No. Stop it Lucy. You need to see everything yourself. And you'll understand why no one wanted to speak the unspoken." I stay silent, as tears continue staining my face.
-Layla: "Jude." I hear her say before I look quickly towards the door and see a look in her eyes that is so terrifying. "The dinner is ready." She says as she raises two fingers from one hand and unites them. Changing the look on my father's face. He stands warily and nods.
-Jude: "Alright. Then here, take Lucky and I'll take Lucy." He says as she picks my baby self up. And they begin walking silently towards the kitchen. As they arrive, Layla goes to the window and blocks the view completely. Looking at Jude.
-Layla: "I hope you enjoy the food dear." She says as she turns on the blender with some fruits in it. As she turns it on, she sighs. "Open it now." Jude goes under the kitchen's table and opens a hidden door. Which was revealing a dark passage.
-Jude: "We both run for it and we protect the babies with our lives. Remember our connecting spell as well Layla." He says as he cuts his finger and smears his blood onto each of their foreheads. After, he begins to whisper an enchantment, his iris' become clear once again. When he's done with his spell, all of them fade into the nothing. Invisible.
-Gray: "Close your eyes and open them when I tell you to." I do as he says, and hear nothing at all. Only some breathing, which I assume is his. "Open them." He says and as I do so, I see everything frozen in time and their faded figures. "We can't follow them if they're invisible, right?" My eyes widen. This power he has is ridiculous. He can manipulate what he sees as well. The time goes back to normal and we begin to follow their rushing. Entering the door, we could see it's dark tunnel and my parents rushing with the babies. Surprisingly they weren't crying at all.
-Jude: "You take the East river route and I'll take the North. And we meet up at the Ceiba." He says as they arrive to the end of the tunnel.
-Layla: "Wait!" She says before they go their separate ways. She grabs Jude's neck and lands her forehead on his. "Just in case if we don't see each other again. Know forever, wherever we are, that I love you both so much for all eternity." She says before landing a kiss on my father's lips and another one on my baby self. "Be safe."
-Jude: "You too my loves." He says before they part ways running quickly.
-Gray: "I want you to see Layla's route first and then Jude's." He says making us redirect to the East. We begin running along with them.
-Layla: "Momma's got you Lucky. I won't let anything happen to us baby." She says as she runs as fast as she can while she looks down onto her hand, seeing two red veins beat.
-Lucy: "Is that the connecting spell?"
-Gray: "Yes. When the color fades away, it means the two souls are gone." After a bit more of running, we see her slow down a bit, letting exhaustion climb it's way up to her. Her hand lands on a tree as she catches her breath. Once again, she looks at her hand with the veins and smiles seeing them fine. Until she realizes the tree's fading color. My eyes widen as the grass begins changing it's color as well until a voice that brings shivers sounds.
-Zeref: "Layla." He says with a dear smile. "I know you're here. Your smell is irresistible." He says as he searches around. "And so is your breathing." She quickly holds her breath and stays still, not wanting to make a sound. But as Zeref get's closer, the baby begins to cry out. Terrified. "Ah, there you are." He says as he throws a flame towards mother's foot, revealing her stand. She wipes her forehead by accident in panic and shouts at the pain.
-Layla: "Stop it!" She says as she holds her baby closely.
-Zeref: "You abandoned your duties without informing me. I believe this child must be the reason why. It hurts me, the fact that you don't trust me." He says as he's closer to her and rubs his hand on her hair.
-Layla: "Well family comes first, doesn't it?" She asks, fear rising in her as she see's her skin wrinkle and her baby's eyes change. "But it's alright now. We're together now. You don't need to be so defensive. Calm down." She says as she holds his hand with shaky breath. Hoping that he calms his death power down.
-Zeref: "You told me you loved me. A year has passed since you ran away. And now you have a child, with who I assume is Jude. You broke our promise."
-Layla: "But--"
-Zeref: "Should I remind you of it? No children with someone other than me. But of course you made a mistake. I can forgive it. It's alright. All you just need to do is let the child and Jude go. That's all." He says, widening Layla's eyes.
-Layla: "I promised to give my life up for my child if necessary. I will play with fire if necessary Zeref." She says as she steps back, closing into the river.
-Zeref: "Layla, think about it. --"
-Layla: "No." She says before pulling out her legendary wicked knife. "I'm not running away anymore." She gulps at the change of Zeref's iris'.
