Mulan

Third story in the March Disney Writing Challenge complete. I'll admit, I struggled with this one. At first I had absolutely no idea which way to go with it, then I wasn't sure who to use for this one, but finally I decided to go with what you are about to read. I hope this one turned out ok and you guys enjoy it.

Main Character: Mira

Disney story prompt for March 3rd: Mulan

Mirajane walked up to Makarov's office door and knocked before entering. "Master, I have your medicine," she said holding out a small try with a few pills and a glass of water on it.

"Dang it. Those jerks on the Magic Counsel think they can just do whatever they want," he said angrily as he slammed a paper on his desk.

Mira sat the tray on the desk and looked at the paper. "What do they want this time?"

Makarov glanced at the barmaid then down at the pills and scowled before pulling the tray closer and picking up the pills and glass. "They are complaining about our guild causing too much trouble and want to disband us," he replied, then popped all the pills in his mouth at once and chugged the water.

Mira looked at him shocked and gasped. "They can't do that, can they?"

Makarov slammed the empty glass back on the tray. "They can do whatever the heck they want because they're the counsel."

"Surely there's got to be something we can do," she said as she pulled the tray back to her.

Makarov scowled again, but this time at the letter. "They are trying to say I am the one that is letting our guild cause so much trouble. They don't realize how much trouble these brats are!"

"So there's nothing we can do?" she asked again.

Makarov sighed. "They are giving us one chance."

Mira smiled in relief. "That's great. So, what do we have to do?"

He looked up at her. "Me," he corrected. "And I have to do a series of physical challenges to prove that I am capable of leading you brats."

"But, Master, you can't. You're in no condition to do any strenuous activities."

It was true. Ever since the Phantom Lord incident, Makarov's health has declined. The medicines he just took was the only thing keeping him going.

"I am aware of that, but I have no choice. For some of my children, this is their only home. I can't let Fairy Tail disban." He pushed his chair back and jumped onto his desk, punching the air above his head with one fist. "I won't let this happen!"

Mira smiled, but that smile quickly faded when Makarov clutched at his chest, bent over, and started coughing. "Master!" she cried out and reached for him so he didn't fall off the desk.

"I... I'm fine, my dear," he said looking up at her with a weak smile, sweat appearing on his forehead.

"No, you're not," she countered as she helped him off the desk and led him out of the room. "You've been working yourself too hard lately."

Makarov was about to protest, but all that came out was a weezy breath and he clutched his chest tighter.

They walked out into the main hall and Mira scanned the room to find their young healer. "Wendy, I need your help."

The blue-haired girl quickly made her way over to them. "What happened?" she asked as she activated her magic and held her hands up to Makarov.

"The Master overdid it again. I think it's his heart," Mira said.

Wendy nodded. "Yeah, it is. Let's get him to the infirmary," she said as she lowered her hands.

They made their way to the second floor infirmary and Mira helped Makarov lay down on one of the beds while Wendy went over to the cabinet full of medical supplies.

"I don't have time for this," Makarov complained as he tried to get up, but Mira pushed him back down.

"No you don't," she said sternly. "You're staying right there until Wendy says otherwise."

Wendy walked up to them with a syringe in her hand and stuck it in Makarov's arm. "Miss Porlyusica told me to give this to him if he ever pushed himself too far." Once the syringe was empty, she pulled it away. "It's something to help him relax. He'll need to stay here and rest for a few days."

Makarov went wide eyed. "No. I can't. I have to go see the Magic Counsel tomorrow."

Wendy shook her head. "Sorry, Master, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen. That serum I gave you will have you out of it for a few days. At least, that's what Miss Porlyusica told me."

"No. If I don't go, they'll disband the guild and..." he started as he pushed Mira away and got off the bed, but as soon as his feet hit the floor, his eyes rolled back in his head and he passed out, falling into Mira's arms.

Wendy stared at Makarov surprised as Mira carefully placed him back on the bed. "What did he mean they'll disband the guild?" she asked worriedly.

Mira gave her a sad look. "The Magic Counsel is trying to disband our guild because we cause too much trouble. The Master is supposed to go do some physical challenges to prove he can lead our guild, but..." She looked back down at Makarov.

Tears welled up in Wendy's eyes. "What are we going to do? The Master can't go do those challenges."

"I'm not sure," Mira admitted sadly.

Several hours later, Mira looked around the now empty guild hall then up at the infirmary door. She had been trying to figure out what to do about their situation all day, even asking the rest of the guild their thoughts, but no one could figure anything out. No one could go in Makarov's place to take the challenges, even though Natsu and Gray were the first ones to volunteer to do so, it had to be Makarov.

She looked down in thought for a moment then turned and walked toward Makarov's office, a determined look on her face. There was only one person that could take Makarov's place, and that was her. She could use her transformation magic to turn into Makarov and take the challenges for him.

She got to Makarov's office, read over the letter he received, grabbed a few items she was going to need, and headed out. It would take her several hours to get to Era, where the magic counsel building was, so she had to leave tonight.

The next morning, Makarov stumbled into his office. The serum Wendy gave him was still messing with him, and he was having trouble focusing and keeping his balance, but somehow made it to his chair. He pushed a few papers around, but frowned when he couldn't find the letter. "Now where did that darn thing go?"

"Master!" Erza yelled as she quickly made her way into the office, Wendy following close behind.

"Master, you should be in bed," the blue-haired girl said.

"I have to find that letter and get to Era," he said still looking for the letter. He looked up at the two wizards in front of him. "Where's Mira? Ask her what I did with that letter."

"Mira's not here," Wendy said moving to Makarov's side.

"What?" he asked looking at the girl.

"She never showed up this morning," Erza explained.

"Where on earth could that woman be?" he asked grumpily as he sat back in his chair and crossed his arms.

Wendy looked at the papers Makarov rummaged through. "Do you think she took the letter?"

Makarove and Erza looked at her. "Maybe. She would be the only one that could take your place by transforming into you."

"If they find out she's not me, they'll disband the guild right then and there," Makarov said, his face scrunching up in worry.

"We have to go stop her," Wendy said.

"Yes. I'll take Levy and Freed with me and..." Erza started, but Makarov cut her off.

"No. If you go and expose her, the guild will be disbanded. We just have to have faith she can pull this off."

Mira had to be at the magic counsel building really early that morning, and as soon as she got there, disguised as Makarov, they immediately started putting her through challenge after challenge. She had to carry heavy weights 10 laps around an 800 sq. ft. room, swim 15 laps back and forth in a pool the length of her entire guild, perform 3 sets of 20 push-ups, jumping-jacks, sit-ups, and high steps, and now she was in the middle of an obstacle corse that was meant for military trainees.

To say she was tired and angry was an understatement. Makarov would've never been able to complete these challenges in his current state. They would've killed him just on the weight run.

She dropped down and crawled under a net that was only a foot off the ground, her arms and legs sliding and threatening to send her face first in the mud she crawled through. She really hoped this obstacle corse was the last challenge because her magic energy was getting dangerously low, and she wouldn't be able to hold her transformation very much longer.

She made it out of the mud-net challenge and ran over to a 10 ft. tall rock climbing wall. "You have got to be kidding me," she said angrily in Makarov's voice. She stood there panting for a second, trying to catch her breath, before she reached up and climbed up the wall. Because she was so exhausted, it took her a lot longer than it should have to get to the top.

She decided to jump down, landing with an "oof" and sprinted over to the last part of the corse, a large 8 ft. pole that she had to climb and ring the bell at the top. The pole had no foot holes or bars to grab onto either. "How the heck do you expect me to climb that?" she asked in Makarov's voice. She was actually grateful that they told "him" that he couldn't use his giant form on any of the challenges. They would've figure out she wasn't him right away.

The counsel, of course, didn't answer her, so she looked around and saw two ball and chains laying on the ground. 'Great,' she thought sarcastically as she walked over and picked them up. They were, of course, 10 pounds each, so she dragged them over to the pole.

She stood there and contemplated how she could use these ball and chains to help her climb the pole when an idea struck her. She lifted the chains up and swung them around the pole, hearing the balls clank together before falling back to the ground, nearly making her smash her nose into the pole.

She groaned out in frustration and tried two more times before the balls wrapped around each other and stayed locked together. She smiled and shifted them up the pole, pulling herself up, and slowly made her way to the top. By the time she did, her whole body was covered in sweat, but she headbutted the bell and slid down the pole, collapsing to the ground and laying flat on her back with her arms out to the side.

She heard clapping to her right and looked over to see the counsel clapping for her.

"I have to say, Makarov, we're quite impressed," a man with brown hair said. She didn't even care to remember their names at this point.

"Yes. We heard that your health had declined, so to see you go through all these challenges was quite a shock," a woman said.

Mira sat up and glared at them. "You knew I had health problems and you still made me go through all that?" she said angrily. She needed to be careful because her voice went a little higher pitched than it was supposed to be.

"If you were really in that bad of health, then you don't deserve to lead your guild," a pink-haired man said.

"Then you could've just told me to retire and choose another to be the master," she said angrily, happy that she got his voice right this time. She really needed to get out of there.

"We will leave your guild alone for now," the brown-haired man said and held up a scroll.

Mira stood up, walked over to him, and took the scroll, unrolling it and quickly skimming the contents before rolling it back up. "So, may I go now?"

"You are free to leave," the woman said.

"But be warned," the pink-haired man added. "We will be watching your guild closely. If you continue to cause so much trouble, we will disband your guild immediately."

Mira glared at them. "Thank you," she said as politely as she could muster. She turned and walked away from them, and once she was out of their site, the transformation dropped and she fell to her knees. "I have a lot more respect for the Master now. Those guys were complete jerks."

Makarov tapped his fingers eagerly on the bar counter. Wendy had allowed him to sit in the main hall as long as he promised to take it easy. He glanced over at the guild doors then back at his still full mug. All this waiting was torture, and he didn't even have the want to drink. It had been half a day already and there was no news on Mira or whether the guild would be disbanded.

"Come on, Master. You're supposed to be taking it easy," Cana said. "Drink up and relax already. Mira will pull this off."

Makarove looked over to the brown-haired drunkard and took a deep breath. "Yeah, you're right." He picked up his mug and chugged it down.

The guild doors opened and he whipped his head around so fast he almost fell off the stool. Mira walked in looking exhausted.

"Mira!" Bisca called out and everyone crowded around her.

"So? Did you do it?" Gray asked eagerly.

"What did the counsel say?" Wakaba asked.

"Do we have to disban?" Macao questioned.

Before she could respond to their questions, Makarov squeezed his way through the crowd. "What happened?"

Mira knelt down so she was eye level with him, pulled out the scroll, and smiled. "We're safe for now, but they said they'll be watching us and that we won't get another chance."

Makarov took the scroll and smiled at her. "I see. You did good, my child. But the next time you decide to do something so reckless, I'll strangle you myself!" he said getting angry. "Do you know how worried I was?"

"I'm sorry, Master, but I couldn't let you go through that. You would have killed over during the first challenge," Mira said in her normal, calm tone.

"Were they really that bad?" Gray asked.

Mira nodded. "Mmhmm. There's no way he would've made it through them all. No offense, Master," she said looking back at the older man.

"You took a big chance going there, Mira, but I'm proud of you. You really saved this guild. You have honored us all by what you've done."

"Thank you, Master," she said, her eyes closed and a big smile on her face.

Too short? I just felt like anything I did for this prompt needed to be longer, but at the same time I don't know what else I could've done because I'm not really that good with doing action scenes... or writing puzzles. Anyway. Let me know in a comment below.

Tomorrow's prompt is Aurora if you want to join me on this journey.

See you in the next chapter :)
