Fox and the Hound
Hey guys. Sorry I didn't post for a couple days. Life got in the way and I wasn't able to write for a bit, but here is the story for March 10th, and I will definitely get the other days up soon too. I'm hoping to get back on track tomorrow, but we'll see.
Anyway. This one was a fun one to write, and I decided to do this one as a song-fic type of short story, simply because as soon as I read the prompt, I couldn't get the song "Best of Friends" out of my head, which if you know this movie, you'll know is the main song. I also knew right away that this was going to be a Natsu and Happy story. So here it is, I hope you enjoy it.
Main Characters: Natsu and Happy
Disney story prompt for March 10th: Fox and the Hound
When you're the best of friends
Having so much fun together
You're not even aware, you're such a funny pair
You're the best of friends
"Happy! Go long!" Natsu yelled as he threw a ball of clothing towards the blue cat.
Happy flew up so he was in the direct path and caught the wad of clothes. "Got it!"
"Nice one, buddy," Natsu said with a huge grin on his face.
Happy dropped the clothes in a basket that was on the ground. It was laundry day, and they both hated that day, but somehow they managed to make it bearable. "Hit me again!" he yelled to the dragon slayer.
Natsu stepped back inside and grabbed a few more clothes and bunched them up before stepping back outside. "Alright. Here they come." He threw the wad of clothing, but they didn't stay together this time.
"Wah!" Happy cried out as he caught a shirt and had to dip down to grab a pair of shorts, but the boxers landed on his face. "Ew!"
"Sorry. Guess I didn't bunch them together enough," Natsu said, but struggled to hide his laugh.
"That's ok. It's like training," Happy said cheerfully as he placed the clothes in the basket.
They did that several times until all the clothes were in the basket. "Ok. That's all of them," Natsu said as he stepped out and closed the door. He picked up a small basket that had soap, a rope, and some clothes pins, which he sat outside before their little game. He walked over and sat the small basket on top of the pile of clothes and picked up the larger basket.
"I think there's more clothes than normal," Happy said as they walked down the trail that led to the river near their house.
"Yeah. It is heavier than usual, but I guess that's what we get for waiting a month to do laundry," the pinkette replied.
Life's a happy game
You could clown around forever
Neither one of you sees, your natural boundaries
Life's one happy game
Natsu sat the basket next to the river, stripped down to his boxers, adding the vest and pants to the already heaping pile, and jumped in. "Whoa that's cold!" he yelled.
Happy chuckled at him and sat down next to the basket. He grabbed a few pieces of clothing and threw it. "In coming!"
Natsu easily caught the clothes. "Hey, throw me the soap." Happy did as he asked and Natsu started scrubbing the clothes, dipping them in the water every once in a while. Once he was satisfied, and could no longer smell his sweat on them, he threw them back at Happy. "Back at ya!"
Happy had tied the rope in between two trees while Natsu scrubbed away at the clothes. He caught the clothes and placed them in the small basket before grabbing a few more dirty clothes and tossing them to his friend. He then picked up the small basket and carried it to the rope to hang the wet clothes.
This went on until the rope was completely full. "Ok, Natsu, that's all that will fit right now," Happy said.
"Alright. Here's these," the slayer said as he tossed the cleaned clothes to Happy, who plopped them in the small basket. He smirked and batted his hand over the water.
"Hey!" Happy cried out as the cold water hit him. He turned around and glared at the laughing dragon. "You'll pay for that," Happy said, a smile crossing his face.
A water fight ensued as the two splashed water at each other.
If only the world wouldn't get in the way
If only people would just let you play
They say you're both being fools
You're breaking all the rules
They can't understand, the magic of your wonderland
"Hey!"
The two looked over and saw Lucy standing on the bank next to their baskets.
"Luce? What are you doing here?" Natsu asked.
Happy climbed up on Natsu's shoulder, panting from the long battle they just had.
"Erza asked me to come find you guys," she said as she looked down at her now wet clothes.
"Why?" Happy asked.
"Not really sure, but she seemed kind of aggravated that you two weren't at the guild today," the blonde replied.
Natsu crossed his arms, a frown on his face. "We told her we wouldn't be available today."
"Yeah. It's laundry day," Happy added.
"Laundry day?" Lucy asked as she looked around the area and saw the wet clothes on the rope and the basket of, she assumed, still dirty clothes. "Uh, you guys know you're not supposed to do this right?"
"What are you talking about?" Natsu asked. "We've been doing this for years. Right, Happy?"
"Aye," the blue cat replied.
"Why don't you guys just use the laundry mat in town?" Lucy asked.
"Where's the fun in that?" Natsu asked.
"Yeah, this is way better," Happy agreed.
"But it's a lot more work, and takes a lot longer this way," the blonde pointed out.
"So?" Natsu asked.
Lucy sighed and rolled her eyes. She stayed around a little longer, but decided to let the boys do their laundry alone and went home.
When you're the best of friends
Sharing all that you discover
When that moment has past, will that friendship last?
Who can say? There's a way!
Oh I hope... I hope it never ends
'Cause you're the best of friends
It took the rest of the day for them to finish their laundry, and it was starting to get dark when they headed back.
"Hey, Natsu, look," Happy said as he flew into the trees on their left.
Natsu stopped and looked in the direction the flying cat went. "What is it, buddy?"
Happy came back a second later with a large, glowing mushroom. "Have you ever seen anything like this?"
Natsu's eyes went wide. "Holy cow! It's huge!"
"I know," Happy said with a smile. "I wonder if it tastes good?"
"Let's take it back and cook it up," Natsu said, matching his friend's smile.
"Aye, sir!" Happy replied. He carried the large mushroom while Natsu carried the basket.
When they got home, Natsu dropped the basket on the floor, went over to the stove and picked up a knife, and, after Happy sat the mushroom on the stove, heated the blade just enough so that it would easily slice through the mushroom. He then lit his hand on fire and roasted it.
Drool dripped from Happy's mouth as the smell of roasted mushroom filled the air. "It smells so yummy," he said then licked his lips to get rid of the drool.
"Yeah, it does," Natsu agreed. He cooked it another minute, then put out the flames. "There. That should do it." He handed one half to Happy and they took their food to the couch.
Happy took a big bite of his half and his eyes went wide. "So good!" he said around a mouth full of food.
They finished their mushroom halves quickly, and Natsu sat back and sighed as he patted his stomach. "Who knew half a mushroom could fill me up."
"Aye," Happy agreed as he too sat back. "Though, I wonder why it glowed like that."
"Don't know, but the glow got brighter the longer I cooked it."
"You don't think it was poisoned, do you?" the cat asked a bit worried.
"Nah. If it were, we would've known it by now," Natsu said.
Happy opened his mouth to say something, but he just sat there, mouth hung open and eyes wide.
Natsu looked at him confused. "What?"
"Y-you're glowing, Natsu!"
"Huh?" The fire breather looked at his hand, and sure enough, he was glowing a deep red. He looked up when he saw a light and saw that Happy was also glowing, but a whitish-blue color. "You're glowing too."
Happy looked at his paws and freaked out. "Natsu! What's going on?"
"How should I know?"
"A-are we gonna die?" the blue cat asked, his eyes big and watery.
Natsu smiled at him and placed a hand on top of his friend's head. "Hey, don't worry. I bet you anything it's like that one time where we ate those mushrooms that made mushrooms grow on our heads."
Happy relaxed. "So, it'll wear off eventually?"
"Yeah. It's got to." Natsu looked at his glowing hand on Happy's head, out the window and saw that it was now completely dark, and smiled. "Hey, Happy."
"Yeah?"
Natsu looked at his friend with a devious smile. "Let's go scare Lucy."
Happy smiled. "Aye."
They left the house and headed straight for Lucy's apartment. When they got there, Natsu frowned a bit when he noticed the glow was starting to dim a bit, but then looked up Lucy's window on the second floor. It was dark, but he could smell that she was inside. "Looks like she's asleep," he said with a wide grin.
"She's gonna be so scared," Happy laughed.
Natsu jumped up to the window and carefully opened it, glad Lucy didn't lock it. He had to be careful since Lucy slept right under the window, but with the help of Happy, they were now standing next to the bed.
"She's really sawing logs," Happy whispered.
"Yeah," Natsu replied, then knelt down so only his head was visible to her. "Hey, Lucy, wake up."
Lucy stirred, but didn't open her eyes.
"Lucy," he said a bit louder.
"Nasu?" Lucy slurred as she slowly opened her eyes.
Natsu smiled at her. "Hey."
"Wha?" she cried out as she quickly sat up.
"Hey, Lucy," Happy said as he landed next to her.
"Ah!" she screamed and backed away from the glowing cat, wide-eyed. She looked from Happy to Natsu, who were both now laughing. "What happened to you two?"
"We ate a glowing mushroom," Happy said.
"Tasted pretty good, too," Natsu added.
"A glowing mushroom? Are you guys nuts?" Lucy asked completely flabbergasted that they would do something so stupid.
Natsu stood up. "Seemed like a good idea at the time."
"H-how long have you guys been like this?" Lucy asked as she got out of bed. She carefully touched Natsu's arm, but he didn't feel any different, and when she looked at that hand, it didn't glow, so it wouldn't come off.
"I don't know. Maybe fifteen, twenty minutes?" Natsu replied. "It's already starting to wear off, because we were brighter back at the house."
"Aye, but we wanted to scare you, so we came here," Happy added.
Lucy's eye twitched. "Seriously? You guys are such jerks!"
Natsu laughed.
Lucy allowed them to stay in her apartment so she could make sure that they would return to normal, and Natsu ended up falling asleep on the couch with Happy on his chest. It was another twenty minutes before they finally stopped glowing, and now she was just watching them sleep. Natsu placed his arm over Happy's body and Happy snuggled into his chest more. She smiled. "They really are the best of friends," she said, then laid down and joined them in dreamland.
How did you like it? I hope it didn't feel too rushed. Let me know in a comment below.
