Chapter 18 - The End of Day One
Twenty minutes had passed, before the next match was about to start. Erza and I were watching the arena as the contenders stepped inside. It was Blue Pegasus vs Mermaid Heel, Blue Pegasus sent out Ren while Mermaid Heel chose Araña Webb.
I heard footsteps behind me and saw Natsu running up to us. After Lucy's fight, he had personally walked her down to our locker room/infirmary. I gave him a big fanged smile as he came closer.
"Is Lucy doing alright?" Erza questioned.
"Yeah, she seems fine," He answered. "Says she wants to take a shower. I can go back and check on her again if you want,"
"Gross Dad, no," I cringed.
"What? What's so-" He cut his sentence short as realization dawned on him. He turned on his heel and was about to make a beeline for the infirmary when Erza grabbed him by the scarf.
"Don't even think about it," She sighed. "Besides, the next match is about to start,"
Dad stopped running in place and crouched down next to me and peered over the edge. "Yeah, this is probably way more exciting," He grinned.
The match got interesting when the guest announcer, Jenny, announced to Ren that Sherry was watching and cheering for him. I had to think about the names for a minute, before I figured out who they were in the future. They were in fact married when I'm from, but I wasn't going to spoil that for anyone.
"Hey," Ren called out in aggravation. Arana took this opportunity to strike, she shot webs at her opponent, surrounding him in the sticky strong substance.
"You left yourself wide open," she taunted.
"You've gotta pay attention Ren!" Sherry shouted. "Now go out there and kick her butt,"
Ren struggled against the strong webs as the old hag scolded Sherry for cheering for the other team. One man tried to defend the pinkette by pointing out that they were engaged, only to get spun by the old hag. Ren finally broke free of the webs only to set the record straight.
"What the hell are you talking about? We are not engaged, I just can't get rid of her,"
"You're so mean!" Sherry squealed.
Arana sent another attack of webs and Ren dodged them flawlessly all while ranting about how he "didn't" love Sherry. In the end, he actually admitted that he didn't like not having her around. He proved to himself that he couldn't lose while Sherry was watching.
Arana sent another web attack, only to be countered by Ren's aerial forza attack. A wave of blue light and energy was sent cascading towards Arana at record speed. The woman screamed on impact as she was sent flying. With a loud thud, Arana fell to the ground and the match was over.
"And the winner is Ren Akatsuki of Blue Pegasus," The announcer declared. "That gives Blue Pegasus an impressive 14 points on day one, while Mermaid Heel only has 3 points,"
Erza and my dad went on to talk about how much stronger Ren has become over the past seven years. Meanwhile I was over here like, "That's it?"
"It's time for the third match of day one," Chapati announced. "It's Quattro Cerberus' War Cry vs Saber Tooth's Olga Nanagear!" The crowd was definitely excited to finally see a Saber Tooth match. I had never heard of either contender, but decided to pay attention anyway. With a clang of the gong, the match began.
The wizard known as War Cry literally started crying, making his tears form into watery fists. His magic was... unique, I suppose. It honestly creeped me out a little. Olga held out his hand and closed it into a fist. Black lightning struck the crying man in an instant, surprising everyone. When the lightning ceased, War Cry was on the ground unconscious.
"And the third match is over in a literal flash," Chapati declared. "Olga's black lightning scorched War Cry's tears for the win. With that hit, the winner is Saber Tooth's Olga Nanagear, his team has scored a total of 20 points in just day one, meanwhile Quatro Cerberus only has two points."
My mouth was hanging open in shock, it only took one hit? That's it?! How am I supposed to compete with that? That's it, I'm doomed. Everyone in this tournament seemed so powerful and strong and I was beginning to doubt myself. Did Dad make the right call by choosing me to compete in these games?
My thoughts were interrupted by the worst singing I've ever heard. It was even worse than Gajeel's! I slammed my palms against my ears, something that everyone was doing. I glanced back at the arena to see Olga singing into a microphone while Mato stood dumbfounded on the side.
Once Olga had left the arena, things started to calm down. There was only one match left, Fairy Tail B and Lamia Scale both hadn't gone yet. I tried to run through different scenarios of who could be going next, a fight between Mirajane and Jura would certainly be entertaining.
To my dismay, the next battle was Mystogan vs Jura. The crowd went wild! It was louder than it had ever been at all today. This was a fight that everyone wanted to see and no one wanted to miss. We were all shocked, Mystogan and Jura on the first day? Would Jellal be able to keep his cover in this fight?
Jellal stepped out, wearing his disguise and many magic staffs. Jura stood proud in the center of the arena. This was going to be an intense fight.
The gong rang and the fight began. Jellal undid the strap holding his staffs and lunged at the wizard saint. Jura swiped his fingers and rock columns erupted from the ground, knocking Jellal into the air. Several more columns erupted from the ground in an attempt to hit Jellal midair. Jellal dodged and started running down the side of one. He sent his staffs to Jura, making them land in a circle around him.
"Five layer magic circle, secret soul," Jellal casted the spell and 5 magic circles appeared above Jura's head. The beam rained down on Jura like thunder and before the dust cleared, a rock fist came hurdling towards Jellal.
"Three layer magic circle, mirror water," Jellal's shield sent Jura's attack back at him. Jura corrected the direction away from him like it was nothing. The stone fist collided with Jellal and he was sent flying to the ground. Up until this point, Jellal had been mimicking Mystogan's magic and he had had enough.
He crouched on his hands and knees and sprang across the stadium like a comet. This caught Jura off guard and Jellal was able to land a hit on the wizard saint. Jellal zipped across the stadium, all while avoiding Jura's attacks. When he stopped, there were seven magic circles drawn in the air like a constellation.
"May the seven stars bring judgement upon you, Grand Chariot. The sky rained with tiny meteors from the circles in the sky.
"Rock form," Jura recited. A large stone warrior appeared from the ground and covered Jura from the attack. The shockwave that came from the two spells was unimaginable. The gust of wind was strong enough to make my hair stand on edge. I hollered in discomfort, Dad was screaming like a maniac as we tried to hold onto the railing.
When the dust settled, Jura and Mystogan were both standing strong. Jura was smiling though. Jellal was getting tired of this. He spread his feet apart and pointed his arm down, his other arm swung around and crossed.
"True heavenly body magic, Sema!" Jellal enacted the spell, making dark purple clouds rise over the stadium. The sky was dark and gloomy as Jellal's aura began to glow bright golden.
"What's he doing?!" Erza shouted. "He's going to blow his cover,"
The spell was at it's peak of power and Jellal was about to cast it. Suddenly he stopped, I could see the sweat from here. The clouds dissipated into nothing as Jellal held his hands over his mouth in agony. Was he... going to... throw up? Jellal fell to his knees, still clutching his mouth. We all stared in shock and confusion, what was going on?
Just when we thought this couldn't get any weirder, Jellal started laughing. He rolled on the ground, hooting and hollering in laughter. He kicked and screamed in nervous delight. It was as if some invisible force was tickling him all over. In one last effort, Jellal reached his hand in the air and collapsed.
Every Fairy Tail member was white wash pale. Did that really just happen?! Erza was choking on her own words, unable to make a sound.
"Down in a fit of laughter!" The announcer declared. The bell rang and the match was officially over. Jura was more surprised than anyone, he could hardly move. "Jura Neekis is the winner, earning Lamia Scale another 10 points. Well folks, that concludes day one of the Grand Magic Games, lets see how the teams are sizing up on the score board,"
1st Saber Tooth - 20p
2nd Raven Tail - 18p
3rd Lamia Scale - 16p
4th Blue Pegasus - 14p
5th Mermaid Heel - 3p
6th Quattro Cerberus - 2p
7th Fairy Tail B - 1p
8th Fairy Tail A - 0p
This was embarrassing. We were losing at a mere zero points. The crowd booed us as Jellal moped out of the arena. Erza slumped against the railing.
"Good grief," She sighed.
"Uh, what just happened," I asked with a blank expression.
"I assume it was Meledy's doing," Erza answered casually. I was still dumbfounded by it all, did that really just happen?
I heard quiet footsteps from behind me and turned around. Lucy was wearing a navy skirt and a tight shirt that stopped mid- torso with a small vest and unattached sleeves. She was smiling, just slightly.
"Oh hey Lucy," Natsu greeted. We all walked over to greet the Celestial mage.
"You feeling better?" Erza asked. Lucy nodded.
"Much better, Thanks," We all turned back to the score board in disappointment. "Our team's in last place," She said dejectedly. There was a moment of silence for our loss.
"Nothin' to worry about Lucy," Natsu smacked her on the back. Lucy gave him an annoyed look. "I'm gonna be competing tomorrow, and I'm gonna turn things around for us," He said confidently.
