Coffee
As she walked inside the building, she breathed in the cool air. The one and only elevator stood wide open, with two suitcases inside it already and a carton obstructing the door. She stepped in and then stepped out when the building's door opened. A girl with a messy bun ran inside with a big duffle bag on her shoulder and carrying a small-sized carton, "I'm so sorry," she kicked the box inside, " I just saw you come in."
"It's fine," she smiled and stepped right in, "I would have taken the stairs," pressing the button to her floor, she politely asked, "Floor?"
"Sixth." she looked at the red light encircling the sixth number, "I'm your new neighbor," she announced happily, "My name is Tavishi."
"Kuhu, I'm Kuhu," she awkwardly smiled.
"I've moved in six zero one," Tavishi informed, the lift made a sharp sound and the doors opened wide. Kicking the carton to block the door from closing, she carried the box while Kuhu exclaiming, "I'll help." She dragged the two suitcases out, "So are you moving in alone?"
"Yes," she gleed, "do you live alone?"
"Huh yeah," she helped with the second carton, "if you need anything, I'm just the last door on the right."
Tavishi nodded, taking a quick glimpse at the end of the hallway, "Thank you. I hope to see you around."
"Yeah!" she bobbed her head as Tavishi unlocked and pulled in all her belongings in the house, "House number six-o-six."
Three days later.
While whisking her evening coffee, the doorbell rang. She stopped whisking and stood there motionless, waiting for whoever it is to leave. It dinged three more times before it stopped. There was pin-drop silence in her two-bedroom apartment. Letting go of her breath which she had been holding, she picked up the mug and resumed whisking again when a loud sound nearby made her jump, nearly dropping her mug on the floor. "Mishti?" Kuhu whispered to the phone, "what's up?"
"Where are you?" she inquired loudly, tapping her foot on the floor.
"At my home," laughing a little louder, "precisely in my kitchen and whisking coff..."
"Then open the damn door!" Mishti scolded. Pulling her inside, Kuhu closed the door, she huffed and entered inside, "Why?"
"I normally don't open doors," She gestured her to sit on the large bean bag sofa, "It isn't safe."
"Fair enough, but that is exactly why you have two doors and a peephole," Mishti pointed, "all that apart, I'm here for two days." The announcement came as a surprise, not only to Kuhu but to Mishti too. She had thought of extending it after a day went by, but she had blurted it already and there was no going back now.
"Seriously?" Kuhu hugged her, "I wanted you to come." She sunk in the beany, "life has become monotonous, you are the only happening thing in my life." Whisking her coffee mixture in our mug.
Mishti looked at the watch, "since when have you been whisking?" she tilted the mug and announced, "It's done!" Looking at the image of the boss baby on the mug, she asked , "How is your boss now?"
Kuhu made an unpleasant expression, "Bossy. Just a bitter gourd, something is wrong with her!"
"Well, take sober steps and be kind." Removing the wrapped box from her backpack, "your very late birthday present," Mishti handed her the box.
Kuhu fervently took it and smiled, "You are the best" She carefully unwrapped the present, making sure it didn't rip apart. The box was an explosion gift box, each layer than images of Kuhu and all the people who mattered in her life. With wonder, she checked each picture, some childhood friends made her teary. In the middle, there was a small box with a lid, which she opened to a pendant. She pulled it out, "Sisters" she looked at Mishti, who pulled out the pendant to show the other half of the pendant, "Best, Best Sisters. Well, at least this is true, I mean if I got Best Friends pendant, I would be suspicious."
Mishti frowned, she was looking forward to the reaction, "Why is that?"
Kuhu thought for a second and smiled, "your best friend is that hot guy, Kunal," she praised, "How is he?"
Mishti nodded in agreement, "Fine, still in the hospital. " She stood up, talked to the nearest window.
Kuhu stood in front of her, "Is his health getting better? Is that what's bothering you? You know I can do face reading."
"Family secrets," she turned to look at her.
Kuhu removed cold milk carton out of the fridge, "we have a life long of secrets for us, I can take no more," but she stepped closer, "Is this something about your parents?" She poured the milk in the mug, waiting for Mishti to respond, "Please tell me they are spying for India and that is why they can never stay put!" After getting a stern look from Mishti, she backed away, "Why do you have to be Agatha Christie ? Got to give me answers or I'll assume the worst."
"It's about..." Mishti began but the doorbell interrupted.
"Not again!" Kuhu rolled her eyes, carefully twirling her coffee, and smelt the coffee. Mishti looked out, leaning her head on the wall, recalling the day she was with Kunal and his mother. Kunal was the only family besides Kuhu that she had in the whole city. She couldn't come to terms with the fact that Kunal had a large family, living in the same city. What if my parents were already here and I just didn't know?
Kuhu sped inside, "some random hot guy wants scissors," Kuhu spoke, "but I told him I don' have any."
Mishti shook her head, this was exactly why she had come here to Kuhu, "Why would you say that?"
"They send hot guys for robbery these days!" Kuhu justified.
There was another ring and Kuhu huffed, "I'm not going, thieves!"
Mishti shook her head, "I'll check."
Tavishi frowned looking at another face, "Hi," she checked the house number, "Kuhu home?" Kuhu stepped out and smiled, "sorry for bothering you. My friend came for scissors, " she opened the door, "we have ketchup being stubborn."
"Happens all the time. He randomly showed up so I didn't know he was your friend. This is my sister, Mishti. This is Tavishi, my new neighbor."
"I've also come here to say, why don't you join us some food. We have too much for three people and I need to pay back for the help, especially for the dinner you provided yesterday."
"No, it's fine! You didn't know the pizza order will flunk." It was eleven too, they don't deliver beyond that.
"Kuhu please, I have time now, the house is pretty settled too, I would invite you later on, but join us..it's casual like a rehearsal for housewarming, except I'm on rent. Join us." She giggled.
They entered the house, there were small decorations and balloons in the living area. A comfortable foldable sofa stood there, "there are just two friends, I told you about."
Manik entered and looked at them, frowning at Kuhu, "I'm offended, you didn't give me the scissors."
"This is Manik! Don't mind him." She glared at her best friend, "This is my neighbor Kuhu and her sister Mishti."
Kuhu sipped her cold coffee and gave him a scornful smile. Mishti attention was turned at the wall, where she found a picture she recognized, quickly pulling out her phone. It was the same. "You are Tavishi Dutta?" Tavishi nodded, a little surprised how she knew her surname, "we are Nishant Maheshwari's sisters."
"And this is ...her boyfriend," Manik introduced, "Abir." Then realizing he had said something wrong, the two were gawking at him, "Wait WHAT!" he looked at Mishti to Tavishi.
"Mishti?" Abir stood shocked, he carefully looked at her.
Mishti stood in tall, crossing her arms, "Abir."
"And how do you two know each other..."Manik questioned curiously.
Abir looked at her and then back to his friend, "she is Kunal's best friend."
"And he deserved better," Mishti stated.
Abir shook his head, "He's naive."
"Just to minimize misunderstandings, I was joking, Abir is not her boyfriend," he pointed at Tavishi, "it is an old joke, I'm over it," Tavishi glared at Manik, "I am now, I swear."
Kuhu drank her cold coffee, utterly confused, but the coffee had taken her time and lots of effort. She lived by the principle that everything will make sense in life, don't leave the joys of the present and certainly, her coffee mattered more than any other confusion in this room. "Can someone start making sense?"
