23~ All he does is lie
Owen
"I can't believe you will not let me pop your pimple," Lainey snaps from the passenger seat.
As I stop at a red light I give her a dead look, "Why the hell would you want to pop a damn pimple on my face ."
She pouts, "Come on, I love popping pimples."
I cringe, "Doesn't it seem a little intimate?"
She rolls her eyes with a huff, "Grow up."
I laugh, "Well, I am sorry for depriving you of happiness."
She snorts, "So you are going to leave a big ass pimple on the middle of your forehead."
"All day, "I say with a smirk.
She'll have to look at the pimple all day. It will kill her that I won't let her pop it.
Lainey shrugs, "Fine. At least I won't be seen walking around with a guy with three eyes."
I look in my rearview to make sure it doesn't look like I have three eyes. When I glance at her she is holding in silent laughter.
"I made you look," She squeaks in between laughs."
I shake my head, "You're a child. "
~~~~
When we reach Maizes, she is already outside. "You're going to have to help me look like Maize and I have been talking," I say as I park.
Lainey climbs into the backseat, "What do you mean?"
I sigh, "You'll have to tell me information about Maize, so it looks like we know each other."
She nods with a small smirk, "That should be easy."
"I'm sure you will find a way to complicate it," I mumble just loud enough for her to hear me.
As I close my car door, she flips me off.
To my left, I hear a door slam and Trey comes walking towards us. I quickly give Maize a tight hug. "I hope you're a good actor," I whisper as I hug Maize.
"Oh, I'm the best." She pinches my side as I pull away, "And it's good to see you too."
I roll my eyes. "Hey, Maize-moo," Trey practically sings as he reaches us.
Maize smiles, "Hey, Fruit Trey."
I mentally gag as they stare at each other. "You ready to go?"
Maize's eyes snap to mine, "Yep."
~~~~
It isn't long before Trey starts asking me questions. Most of them are along the lines of how Maize and I started hanging out. Luckily Maize saved my ass with a lie about how we ran into each other.
But since she said we ran into each other at the hospital I had to lie and say I visited Lainey in the hospital and how I feel horrible about how I treated Lainey.
Lies, lies, and more lies. I do feel bad about hating her, but the pranks were epic.
And it didn't help with Lainey in the back laughing.
After way too many questions, we finally arrived. "You're a good liar," Maize whispers as we get out of the car."
"Bitch please, all he does is lie," Lainey yells from behind me.
A smile tugs at my lips as I say, "Who's ready to ride some rides?"
~~~~
Lainey
I spend most of the day watching Maize and Owens play flirt and Trey learn how to give someone the stink eye.
Trey still hasn't mastered the art of an evil look yet. It will be something I will have to teach him when I wake up.
And the worst part is all I can do is watch. Sometimes I comment on their conversations, but it goes unheard. At least Owen always smiles and glances at me.
Eventually, Owen suggests Trey should ride the swings with Maize because he has a tummy ache.
"How do you think our plan is working?" Owens asks me once they're on the ride.
"I think Trey is definitely jealous," I say as I watch the swings rise off the ground.
They are making me jealous.
At first, I didn't anything of the icky feeling I got when they would smile at each other. But then I got so annoyed that I wanted to push Maize into a trash can, and I realized I was jealous.
I'm jealous because I have to watch from the distance, not because Owen put his arm around Maize's shoulders on a roller-coaster and multiple other rides.
Owen sighs, "I hope it is because Maize is nice and all, but playing boyfriend is getting a little old."
Something in me comes to light and a shoot of excitement runs through me. I quickly mask my feelings and say, "Is my friend not good enough for you?"
Owen rolls his eyes, "No, I just don't see her that way."
I nod and suddenly I hear, "Owen!"
We both turn to find Caleb standing behind us with an unreadable look.
"Who the hell are you talking to?"
Owen pales, "What do you mean?"
Caleb tilts his head to the side, "You were talking to a fucking trash can."
I look beside me and two feet away is a trash can.
Uh oh.
Owen runs a hand through his head and Caleb swallows. "Are you possessed or something?"
"What is wrong with you?" Owen asks, trying to soundboard, but it comes out desperate.
"Don't gaslight me, Huntley," Caleb snaps. "It looked like you were talking to someone at my party too."
I sigh, "Just tell him."
Hesitation flashes through Owens's eyes, "His grandma is super weird so I am sure he will believe you," I add.
Owen sighs, "It's a long story."
Caleb folds his arms, "I've got time."
~~~~
So, Owen tells Caleb everything. At first, he didn't believe Owen, but that was solved by me telling Owen a story from when we were kids that I promised to never tell anyone.
Once Caleb realized Owen was not lying, he nearly passed out.
"So all this time you have been able to see Lainey when no one else can?" Caleb asks.
"All because of a wish," Owen looks down at me. "At least that's what she thinks."
I shove Owens's shoulder and Caleb smiles, "You know if you tell anyone else, they will put you in a mental ward."
Owen groans, "I know."
"So, I guess she is stuck with you till she wakes up," Caleb says while rocking back on his heels.
Owen gives Caleb a look and I suddenly find myself feeling very curious. "What was that look for?"
His eyes snap to mine, "What look?"
A grin spreads across my face, "The look you just gave Caleb."
Confusion crosses his face and Caleb snickers, "I didn't give him a look."
"Whatever," I sing.
He shakes his head and Caleb is practically bursting with joy. "I bet this has been an interesting week."
"You have no idea," Owen mumbles.
As Trey and Maize are getting off the swings Caleb leaves with a promise to call Owen later.
"You want to grab something to eat?" Trey asks with a huff, most likely because of the smile Owen gave Maize.
Owen shrugs and Maize smiles, "Yeah, I'm hungry."
So, we follow Trey around till he finds a place to eat.
Owen falls back a step to walk with me as he says, "Is he always this picky?"
I smile, "It's one of his many traits."
He has always had a hard time picking out a place to eat
Owen rolls his eyes while they order. Once they finish he goes to find a restroom while Trey and Maize sit down.
"I have a question," Trey says as Owen walks towards the bathroom.
"What?" Maize asks as pulls out her phone.
"What the fuck is going on?" Trey nearly shouts.
Maize drops her phone and giggles slip out as I watch the drama unfold.
"I don't know what you are talking about?" Maize says softly.
"Since when did you hang out with Owen Huntley?" Trey snaps. "Your best friend's arch nemesis."
Maize looks down, "Like I said, we just ran it on each other."
"Bullshit," Trey bites out.
I wish I had some popcorn.
Maize's face changes as she leans forward to stare Trey down, "Why does it suddenly bother you?"
I hear a door slam and Owen walks out of the bathroom. I quickly yell, "Wait there."
Owen does a double take then notices the situation and hides behind a table.
"I don't want to see my friend get hurt," Trey says without meeting her eyes.
He has feelings!!!
Obviously, He has feelings, I met feelings for her.
"I'm not going to get hurt," Mazie responds while twirling a strand of hair around her finger.
"Why are you hanging out with him?" Trey blurts.
"What do you mean?" Maize asks.
"Our best friend is in the hospital, and you are hanging out with him and not me" Trey responds.
Suddenly, I don't feel as giddy.
Maize seems to feel the same, "Trey, I didn't know you felt that way."
"How could you?" He sighs, "You never spend time with me."
Maize takes his hand in hers, "Trey, when Lainey got out of the hospital it scared me. It was easier to pull away from you than endure my feelings."
Trey's hand tightens around hers, "I should have been there for you."
Trey nods, "I should have been there for you too."
Maize smiles, "Nothing is going on between Owen and me."
A look of confusion flashes across Trey's face, "Then why did you act like it?"
Maize's cheeks heat and her knee starts bouncing. "It's a long story."
Trey places his head in his other hand, "I don't think it is."
Maize's eyes snap up to his and he gives her a soft smile. "Maize, the reason I was acting like a jealous asshole is because I have feelings for you."
I jump out of my seat to scream and jump around like a crazy person. I have been waiting for this moment for years.
"I have for a while, but I was too scared to say anything in case you didn't feel the same." Trey rubs his thumb over the back of her hand. "I was scared if I said anything, and you didn't feel the same I would lose my best friend."
Maize sighs, "Trey, I wish you would have said something before now."
He tilts his head, "What do you mean?"
Maize laughs, "Trey, I have had a major crush on you since 9th grade."
Something like relief flashes across his face and he lets out a long breath, "I feel a lot better now."
They both laugh and Mazie says, "So, what do we do now?"
Before Trey can answer Owen stands up and yells, "Kiss her you idiot!"
Trey rolls his eyes and they both stand up. Trey then takes Maize's hand and pulls her against him. Trey says something I am unable to hear, and he kisses her.
I clap my hands and cheer. Owen who has come out of hiding stands beside me, wearing a smile that matches mine. "It seems like he has wanted to kiss her for a long time."
I laugh and they continue kissing each other.
They finally pull apart and Owen slowly claps for them, earning him two glares.
"Ask them if it was better than their last kiss," I say to Owen.
Owen masks his surprise and asks my question.
Their response is two eye rolls.
Despite how happy I am for them a small part of me feels sad. I wish I could have experienced this in real-time with them.
I wish I wasn't invisible.
My longest chapter so far!!!!
I hope y'all are enjoying it!
