Light & Shadow

Finally, Link had obtained the final Fused Shadow. I returned to his shadow as he had just finished talking to Lanayru, the fourth light spirit.

Suddenly Link froze in his tracks. What was he stopping for? Light erupted from behind us as the Lanayru Spirit burst from the spring in the form of a giant Python.

Just like that, the light was gone once again. The room filled with the familiar dark twilight that I knew all to well.

I left Link's shadow, turning to my opaque form. Link, Hyrule's warrior clad in green, was a blue-eyed beast once again.

What happened to all the light? Link just barely restored it minutes before we entered the Lakebed Temple earlier that day.

I looked up and received my answer. Unbearable hatred and anger flashed in my chest and flowed throughout my body.

"Zant!" I snarled as I examined the disgusting creature that stood before me. He was the one who ruined my world, my home.

Suddenly my body was thrown from it's sitting position on the rock ledge and up into the air. I dangled above the spring with my arms pinned up against nothing. I struggled against the invisible force, but I couldn't move at all.

The three pieces of Fused Shadow that Link and I worked so hard to get appeared before me, out of my possession, and floated over to the monstrous Twili being that now stepped forward to the edge of the rock ledge.

"Did you honestly mean to take an ancient and withered power like this and turn it against me?" Zant asked mockingly.

The Fused Shadows disappeared. "You are a foolish traitor, Midna. Why do you defy your King?"

"MY KING?" I asked, feeling my anger increase with each word that fell from his fowl lips. "You, who do nothing but abuse the power of your tribe? You must be joking!"

"How dare you?!" Zant exclaimed. "Are you implying that my power is our old magic? Now that is a joke!"

My body was flung through the air once again and I was slammed harshly to the ground on the other side of him by the entrance of the spring.

"This power is granted to me by my god!" Zant turned to face my frail body that lay on the ground. "It is the magic of the King of Twilight, and you will respect it!"

I slowly pushed myself up and turned to see a red ball of power growing before Zant.

Link awoke, his electric eyes shooting open. He jumped up and launched himself at the Twili man. Before he could reach him, he was frozen mid air and tossed back to the ground.

I quickly crawled over and kneeled beside my unconscious companion. I shook him slightly, trying to wake the hero. I watched helplessly as a shard of dark magic impaled itself into the top of Link's head.

I was pulled back into the air, left to hover next to Zant.

"My Midna...Did you forget? That beast is one of the light dwellers who oppressed our people." He hissed in my long imp ear. "No matter how much you may desire otherwise, you will never be more than a shadow in their world. You cannot consort with their kind, but if we can make this world ours, Midna... light and darkness will meet at last."

"Our tribe will take back this realm...and sweet darkness will blot out this harsh light." Zant continued, the excitement clear in his tone. "And that, Midna, is why..."

He paused and I could hear the mouth part of the large mask he wore retract, revealing his hideous mouth.

"...I need you." He finished, blowing his horrendous breath in my direction. I fought the urge to gag.

"Not just for me, but for all of our people...lend me your power." He added when I didn't respond.

Finally, I was able to break free from his grasp and hopped down to the ledge, away from him.

"So be it," he snarled angrily. "I'll return you to the light world you covet!"

I was raised into the air for the third time and levitated over to the spring where I was left to hover. Suddenly I was filled with genuine fear as the water rippled below me and filled with light.

The light spirit Lanayru, surfaced and slithered up toward me. I couldn't contain the loud shriek of pain and fear that burst from my throat and out of my mouth.

Lanayru swallowed me whole, the light was more than my body could handle. A fiery pain burned throughout my whole body. It was intolerable.

As the twilight began to fade, the light consumed everything. Even my dark soul was pierced by the brightness. As the twilight dimmed, my life force grew weak.

It was then that I realized, I was dying.

Just like that it was all over. I struggled to open my eyes, I rested upon the familiar back of the gray beast that I had grown very fond of.

We were no longer at Lanayru Spring, either. Zant was nowhere in sight. Instead I recognized our surroundings to be Hyrule Field.

I heard a whimper from the transformed hero on which I lay.

"Link, hero chosen by the goddesses..." The voice of the Lanayru Spirit spoke, though it wasn't anywhere in sight. "Go to the princess locked away in the castle. That princess holds the key that can unlock you from your shadow form..."

With those last words of guidance, the spirit's voice disappeared completely.

"P-please...pr-princess Zelda." I managed to muster out in Link's ear. Link seemed to understand as he started off toward the castle.

He started at a slow pace, then gradually picked up speed until we were sprinting full speed across the field.

He dodged any monsters that appeared in our path, too hurried to pause and fight.

I lost consciousness soon there after, the pain too much for my body to handle awake.

I barely could find the strength to clutch the wolves gray fur between my small discolored hands.

As we traveled flashes of our adventure so far ran through my disoriented mind. From when I found him in the Hyrule Castle dungeon, to the Forest Temple in Faron, to Death Mountain in the Eldin Providence, and finally the Lakebed Temple in lake Hylia.

Plus everything that occurred in between. Transporting Illia and Prince Ralis of the Zora's from Telma's bar to Kakariko village and finding the children from Ordon all there safe and sound.

All the monsters we fought together, all the obstacles we had overcome. It couldn't be over yet. I wasn't ready for our journey to end. Not like this.

If anything, Link needed to go on. He needed to stop Zant and save this world.

Not just the world of light, but my realm as well. The World of Twilight that was just as much endangered as Hyrule.

Zant, the despicable being, had changed my tribe. My people. From the citizens they were to Twili Creatures.

Link needed to help them, my people. They need him. I knew I had to make sure that Princess Zelda told him where the mirror was. It was the only way to reach the other realm; my world.

The next time I awoke, Link was wandering through some kind of sewage system. It was just like the way we took when I broke him from the cell not that long ago.

This time, Link was on his own. I couldn't offer any help to him.

I never felt so useless in my life.

We emerged onto the roof of Hyrule Castle. I knew now, that we were almost there.

I felt a small sense of relief to know that Link would soon reach the help he needed. I was confident that Princess Zelda could fix this.

That offered me a little comfort, which I held on to dearly. A small break in the pain, allowing a little relief.

Link was my relief, I knew not where I would be without him. A small smile tugged at my lips.

Link pushed the door open to the chamber which Zelda resided in. We were here, at last.

Link paused near the center of the room. Zelda wasn't standing by the window, where we had last seen her.

Suddenly I felt myself sliding, my own weight was more than I could handle at this point. Before I could grasp his fur or anything for that matter, I fell to the stone floor.

Link turned quickly and looked down at me, whimpering.

A gloved hand reached down and touched my shoulder lightly. I could feel the light aura around me.

It couldn't be anyone other than Zelda.

"Please...please tell me...How do we break...the curse on this one?" I gasped to Zelda, I could barely manage to speak through the pain.

I reached up a hand, which Zelda lightly clasped both of her hands around.

"This... is the one...You need him...to save your world!" I continued, with a small cough. "That's why...Princess...please...you must help Link."

The Princess of Hyrule hovered her hand over Link. "What binds him is a different magic then what transformed him when he first passed the curtain of Twilight. It is an evil power. Our world is one of balance... Just as there is light to drive away darkness, so, too, is there benevolence to banish evil. Head for the Sacred Grove that lies deep within the lands guarded by the spirit Faron."

"There you will find the blade of evil's bane that was crafted by the wisdom of the ancient sages...the Master Sword. The Master Sword is a sacred blade that evil can never touch. Evil cloaks you like a dark veil, and that blade is the only thing that can cleave it." The wise princess explained.

I took a heavy breath. "Fine... Link... You can... You can get to the woods... on your own, right?"

Link whimpered slightly, but gave a small nod of his large wolf head.

I looked up slightly, trying to turn toward Zelda. "Princess...I have one last request..."

"Can you tell him... where to find the Mirror of Twilight?" I croaked.

"Midna... I believe I understand now just who and what you are." Zelda said quietly. "Despite your mortal injuries, you act in our stead...These dark times are a result of our deeds, yet it is you who have reaped the penalty. Accept this now, Midna. I pass it to you."

A bright light surrounded my hand which was clasped between both of Zelda's. I looked down to see my whole body had begun to glow. My body slowly floated into the air.

"No! Link, STOP HER!" I yelled, suddenly realizing what the Hylian Princess was doing.

Just like that, Princess Zelda disappeared before my eyes. Once I floated back down, the pain had vanished. I now stood on my own two feet. I looked down to see I was no longer discolored and I felt back to normal.

Link and I gazed to the empty place where Zelda once knelt in my aid. "We go back, Link, to the Faron Woods." I said sorrowfully.

I jumped up, performing a small back flip, and landed on Link's back. He trotted to the door, where we both paused to look back.

"Zelda...I have taken all that you had to give... though I did not want it. Thank you." I said solemnly into the empty chamber.

Link left the room. I now knew it was up to me to assist this hero, and save this land. For Zelda, For Link, for the sake of the light that hurts me so much.

And maybe, just maybe, I'd be accepted as a friend instead of a foe. And maybe, my realm could be saved as well and returned to our more peaceful existence, without Zant.

I was confident that we had a chance, after all Link was by my side. I had never met anyone more kind, selfless, or courageous than this boy of the Light World.

I'm in love with him.

Author's Note: Thank you for reading my little short story! I hope you all enjoyed it. (: I just wrote this for fun because I've been replaying The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and I really love Midna as a character in the game. The attachments are "Midna's Lament" the song from the game and the picture is a fan art of Link and Midna that I didn't draw myself, but I found very cute. I'd also like to disclaim that almost all the dialogue is directly from the game so I don't own it, but everything else is mine. Thanks again! (:

Xo, Zelda
