Ch.6: Beneath the Falling Stars

The morning sun filtered through the windows, casting golden hues across the apartment. Haeri stood by the kitchen counter, absentmindedly stirring her coffee. Her mind swirled with fragments of conversations, dreams, and the heavy weight of realization.

Was it truly possible that she was the lost sister? Their descriptions, the way they looked at her as if searching for something, the haunting dream of shadows and lights—it all pointed to one thing.

“Haeri, are you okay?” Jake’s voice broke through her thoughts.

She looked up, startled to see him standing there with concern etched across his face. “Oh, yeah. Just... thinking.”

“About the dream?” he asked gently, leaning against the counter.

“Among other things,” she admitted. “Do you ever feel like the universe is trying to tell you something, but you’re not ready to hear it?”

Jake tilted his head, considering her words. “All the time. But the universe doesn’t wait. When it speaks, you have to listen, even if it’s hard.”

Haeri nodded, though her heart raced. She wasn’t sure she was ready for what she was starting to believe.

---

The boys had spent the morning lounging around the apartment, their laughter echoing through the small space. Haemi had claimed Sunghoon’s lap as her throne, while Haesu barked playfully at Ni-Ki, who was attempting to dodge the dog’s enthusiastic antics.

“I think Haesu likes you,” Sunoo teased, watching Ni-Ki leap onto the couch.

“He’s plotting my demise,” Ni-Ki declared dramatically, earning a chorus of laughter.

Haeri couldn’t help but smile. Despite the heavy truths surrounding them, these moments felt light, almost normal.

But her smile faltered as she caught sight of the notebook on the coffee table. She had been scribbling her thoughts earlier, piecing together the fragments of what she suspected. Quietly, she picked it up and slipped it into her bag.

---

Later that afternoon, Haeri suggested a walk to clear her mind. The group agreed, and they found themselves wandering through the city park. The boys marveled at the ordinary—children playing, couples strolling, the rustling of leaves in the breeze.

“It’s strange,” Jay mused. “This world feels both chaotic and peaceful. Like it’s holding its breath.”

Heeseung nodded. “It’s nothing like the celestial realm. But it has its own beauty.”

As they walked, Haeri’s eyes were drawn to a small antique shop tucked away in a corner. Something about it seemed familiar, though she couldn’t place why.

“Let’s go in,” she suggested, already heading toward the door.

The shop was filled with trinkets and artifacts that seemed to hum with history. Haeri wandered through the aisles, her fingers grazing over old books and delicate jewelry.

“Looking for something special?” the shopkeeper asked, his voice warm yet curious.

“Just browsing,” Haeri replied, though her gaze was fixed on a small, star-shaped pendant resting on a velvet cushion.

She picked it up, feeling a strange sense of deja vu.

“It’s beautiful,” Jungwon said, appearing beside her. “Do you feel connected to it?”

Haeri hesitated before nodding. “It’s like I’ve seen it before, but I don’t know where.”

The shopkeeper smiled knowingly. “Sometimes, things find their way back to us, even if we don’t remember why.”

---
The walk back from the park was quiet, the kind of silence that held unspoken thoughts. The boys seemed distracted, their usual chatter subdued. Haeri’s mind, however, was fixed on the star-shaped pendant she had purchased from the antique shop.

As they entered her apartment, Haeri placed the pendant on the kitchen counter and let out a deep breath. “I’ll get dinner started,” she said, trying to sound casual.

“Need help?” Jay asked, though his tone suggested he wasn’t entirely present.

She glanced at him, noticing the faraway look in his eyes. “No, you all should rest. It’s been a long day.”

The boys nodded, dispersing to various corners of the apartment. Ni-Ki and Sunoo took to playing with Haemi and Haesu, their laughter slowly returning to the room. Sunghoon and Jungwon sat by the window, lost in a hushed conversation, while Jake sprawled on the couch, seemingly deep in thought.

---

Dinner was a quiet affair, but the warmth of the food seemed to ease some of the tension. Haeri watched the boys carefully, noticing the way they glanced at one another, as though sharing a secret they couldn’t yet reveal.

Afterward, the boys retreated to the living room, engaging in lighthearted banter that filled the apartment with much-needed life. Haeri cleared the table, her thoughts drifting back to the pendant. Something about it called to her, a pull she couldn’t explain.

Once the dishes were done, she retrieved the pendant from the counter and carried it to her living room. She sat on her couch, the small star resting in her palm.

As she held the pendant, a strange warmth spread through her hand, climbing up her arm and settling in her chest. Her breathing grew shallow as the room seemed to darken. She tried to place the pendant down, but her fingers wouldn’t obey.

---

That night, back at the apartment, Haeri sat alone in her room, the pendant resting in her palm. She couldn’t shake the feeling that it was a piece of a larger puzzle.

Her thoughts spiraled, piecing together the boys’ stories, her dreams, and her own memories—or lack thereof. Could she truly be the lost star?

Her heart raced as she flipped through her notebook, comparing everything she had written down. The way the boys described their sister matched her in ways she couldn’t ignore. The dream of being consumed by shadows, the overwhelming sense of connection to the boys, even the pendant—all of it pointed to one thing.

She was their sister.

Suddenly, the darkness consumed her, pulling her into a world of shadows as soon as she thought those.

But before she could process it further, a loud crash came from the rooms. Haeri bolted out of her room to find the boys standing in defensive stances, their powers faintly glowing.

“What’s going on?” she asked, her voice trembling.

“The shadows,” Heeseung said, his voice grim. “They’ve found us.”

The room darkened, the once-cozy space now filled with an oppressive energy. Shadows slithered across the walls, their shapes unnatural and menacing.

“Stay behind us!” Jay commanded, his voice firm.

Haeri’s heart pounded as the boys fought back the encroaching darkness. Sunoo’s light burned brilliantly, pushing the shadows back, while Jungwon’s knowledge guided their strategy. Each star shone in their unique way, their unity creating a shield against the darkness.

But the shadows were relentless, and for every one they defeated, another seemed to take its place.

In the chaos, Haeri’s bag was knocked over, and her notebook tumbled out. The pendant rolled across the floor, catching the faint glow of the boys’ powers.

You saw the shadows drifting towards her and the pendant in her hand. “Heeseung! Jay!” Haeri shouted, holding up the pendant. “Does this mean anything to you?”

They all looked at you while fighting the shadows away. Heeseung’s eyes widened. “That was hers... our sister’s.”

The shadows seemed to react to the pendant, their movements growing more frantic. Haeri clutched it tightly, feeling its warmth spread through her.

But just as she felt a surge of hope, a shadow broke through the boys’ defenses, racing toward her. Before she could react, it wrapped around her, pulling her into darkness.

---

Haeri’s vision swam as she found herself in a void, the shadows whispering around her. She could see the faint lights of the boys in the distance, but they felt unreachable.

“Haeri!” Their voice echoed, desperate and pained.

She tried to run toward them, but the shadows dragged her back, their whispers growing louder.

“You don’t belong here,” shadows hissed. “You are ours.”

Just as the darkness threatened to consume her completely, a burst of light erupted from the pendant in her hand. The shadows recoiled, their hold on her breaking.

___

Haeri jolted awake, gasping for air. She accidentally bumped the vase on the side of the couch, making her squeak at contact. She looked around breathing heavily and noticed she was back in her living room. She also noticed the pendant glowing softly in her hand.

Suddenly, the boys burst in, their faces etched with worry.

“Are you okay?” Jake asked, kneeling beside her.

Haeri nodded, though her hands trembled. “It was a nightmare... but it felt real.”

The boys exchanged worried glances, their expressions confirming her fears. The shadows weren’t just in her mind—they were coming for her.

Before they could do or think anything everyone's vision darkened, all fell where they stood or sat, unconscious.
