Roommates

When Magnus walked by one of his many guest rooms, he paused, then backtracked to peer inside the open door.

His guest, Jace Wayland (or Morgenstern. Maybe even Lightwood. Magnus wasn't entirely sure what his last name was) was laying in bed wearing nothing but a pair of black boxer briefs and sprawled out on his stomach, snoring.

Magnus rolled his eyes. It was 2 in the afternoon. He had places to be and things to do. He didn't have time to be babysitting Shadowhunters all day. "Get up! I have errands to run. A life to live!"

Jace yelped as Magnus threw a pillow at him. "I'm up. What time is it?"

"Time for you to set an alarm clock. Or at least get up and quit moping around like the sad Shadowhunter that you're acting like," Magnus scoffed as Jace stretched and yawned. "I think you're overstaying your welcome a little bit, don't you think?"

"Not at all. I needed a place to crash and you graciously opened your doors to me," Jace said, halfway through a yawn.

"Actually, you just barged in. Without knocking. Right when I was kissing Alec-who is my boyfriend by the way-who occasionally visits from time to time. I'd much rather have the house to myself when he's here."

Jace smirked. "Sorry about-"

"No you're not."

"I am a little bit. But I really needed a place to stay until the Clave straighten out my predicament. I'm sure you understand."

Magnus rolled his eyes again. "You're going to have another predicament on your hands if you don't get the hell out of bed and out of this apartment."

A pair of jeans landed on Jace's face. "I have a friend coming over later. They're going to help me with this Clave situation."

"Oh really," Magnus squinted at the young Shadowhunter. "I don't believe a word you're saying. But if you're not gone by the time Alec and I return later, I will toss you out myself. I can't be housing Shadowhunters under my roof. It's not good for my complexion."

"You house Alec. He's a Shadowhunter."

"But the difference between you and him is that he's less annoying and he's a hell of a lot cuter. Though you're not entirely bad looking yourself. You're one of my better looking roommates that I've had over the years." Magnus snapped his fingers and had Jace's bag packed in less than a second. "Don't forget what I said about being gone when Alec and I get back."

Jace ran a hand through his blonde hair. "You're really kicking me out?"

Magnus noticed the hurt tone in the young man's voice and turned to look at him. Jace's eyes were filled with pain and loss. "Listen," Magnus sighed. "I'm not doing this because I don't like you or anything. I'm trying to teach you something here."

"Teach me something," Jace half scoffed, half laughed. "That's quite the lesson. What exactly is the lesson? Never trust a Downworlder?"

"No. You were taught that already. Can't teach you what you already know." Magnus sat down on the bed. "I want you to fight, Jace. I know you're not the type to just roll over and die. You're a fighter. Alec told me. That's why I want you to get out of this bed. I want you to go fight for your life."

Jace raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why do you want me to fight?"

Magnus sighed but smiled warmly at him. "Because I believe in you, Jace. I believe that you're not entirely evil. Yes, we all have a dark side but not everyone chooses to embrace it. You clearly haven't."

"But-" Jace began, but he was cut off when Magnus raised a finger and placed it on his lips, silencing him.

"No but's. Just get dressed." With a smile, Magnus pat Jace on the cheek and got up from the bed with the grace of a cat. "Oh and before you go, clean up this mess. It's atrocious in here."

"Alright, alright. I'll clean up. You don't have to insult me," Jace grumbled.

"I wasn't. I was speaking the truth," Magnus smiled. "Remember what I said, Jace Wayland."

"Kind of hard not to," Jace said in a sweet voice as he stood up to pull on his jeans. He waited, straining his ears as he listened to Magnus out in the other room. The familiar sound of a Portal opened up, followed by a whooshing sound, then silence.

Magnus was gone.

Jace collapsed back down onto the bed with a sigh, pulling out his phone from his jeans pocket on the floor. Scrolling through his list of contacts, he smirked as the name he was looking for appeared on the screen. He clicked it with his thumb.

After the third ring, a female voice finally answered. "I thought I told you to stop calling me."

"Kaelie. Don't be like that. I know you're glad that I called. Aren't you?"

Kaelie sighed. "I hate it when you use my flaw against me. You know I can't lie."

"Exactly," Jace chuckled. "Glad I called?"

Another sigh. "Yes. I am. It's been a while. I was starting to wonder if you forgot about me."

"A beautiful girl like you?" Jace scoffed. "Listen, I'm at a friend's and he's gone for the day. You should come over."

Someone laughed in the background on the other end. "I can't. I'm at work."

"Skip it."

"It's not that easy, Jace."

"I'm all alone...." Jace deepened his voice.

Kaelie sighed again. "Fine. I'll be there in five. Where are you?"

"You know where Magnus Bane lives?" Jace asked.

"Magnus Bane? Oh ho. Jace Wayland. What are you doing there?" Kaelie giggled. "I'll be there in a few."

"Can't wait," Jace smirked as he hung up, glad that he had the place to himself. Glancing around the room, he shrugged at the mess around him on the floor.

He'd clean up later.
