The dread that was a life under their rule...
The humiliation of being caged like birds.

On that day, we learned what real fear of the titans felt like.

Year 845 Shiganshina District

"What... the hell?!" The boy, with beautiful green eyes and black hair, shouts in surprise with his fists clenched. "Quit calling yourselves the stationary troops, then. Wall-building squad would be more like it!"

He had sticks and tree branches on his back (probably for cooking and fire at home) He had a confused yet amusing expression plastered on his face, whereas the girl behind him looked calm and collected.

"Yeah, sounds good!" The half-drunk soldier - in front of him - submissively agrees with him.

Your brother, Caleb, starts to chuckle lightly at the determined child. "He has the guts to say that, I like him!"

"I guess... The man's drunk, what's so scary about that?" you say, with a shrug, as you keep observing them with narrow (narrowed?) eyes.

A small smile start to form on your face. You put your index finger under your nose sheepishly to hide your smile from Caleb. It was true, he has guts.

You two kept watching them from a safe distance. You both have nothing better to do anyway.

"The girl, behind the guy, is kinda cute." Caleb grins, a tint of red sprayed over his cheeks.

You paid no attention to what he was saying, instead you kept on staring and listening carefully to the black-haired boy. He looks like he was the same age as the both of you, but the way he thinks was different... way different.

"Even if we can't get outside these walls, we get food and rest, and that's enough to stay alive, but... a life... like that..." he stopped for a moment before opening his mouth again to release his thoughts, once more. "Is no different than if we actually were cattle."

Your (e/c) eyes widened in realization. He was absolutely  right; the walls were a pen, we were the cattle. The walls couldn't stay tall for eternity. We were eventually going to be all wiped out.

Fear started to devour your heart as these thoughts kept on repeating in your mind.

"Let's go." All of the sudden, Caleb pulled you away, bringing you out of your trance.

"Y-yeah..."

You watch the courageous boy, who was now walking away from your direction.

Caleb grins unexpectedly at you as he pulls you to the direction of your house.

"What are you grinning about, weirdo?"

"You have a crush on him! I know him, his name is Eren and he's kinda of a dork, but he seems like a guy we could hang with. I saw the way yo-" his jabbering was cut of, when you strongly pull your arm away with a frown formed on your face.

"What the heck is... wrong with you?" You say after you harshly flicked him on the forehead, thus leaving a red mark.

He stuck his tongue out at you. "Meanie! Brute! Bully! Jerk fa-" you didn't let him finish his words, you already kicked him in the groin.

Like any man would react, he covered his "private parts" from anymore "danger" as he lay there on the dirt, writhing in terrible pain.

You sneer at your older brother. He grimaced at you for a second, droplets of tears slowly streaming down his red cheeks.

"T-That was the strongest one, y-yet..." he said with his voice breaking.

"Me like him? Get a grip on reality, big bro," you scoffed with quirked eyebrows. "Are you done whining? I'm hungry, let's just go home already."

You two strolled through the city as you chat about the boy you observed earlier.

At your house...

"Eren Jaeger? The son if Grisha Jaeger?! The man who single-handedly saved hundreds of people from the plague?!"

"You seem surprised, (y/n)." Your mom smiled, while she continues to stir the chowder in the pot. "It was a long before the two of you were born."

"Chowder, again? I want roasted goose! Chowder's gross!" Caleb complains as he loudly pounds  on the table.

"Shut up, idiot." You grab his ear and mercilessly twisted it with everything you got.

He winced in pain. He stuck his tongue out again and made annoying noises.

"You just like Eren!"

"You just like Mikasa," you retorted.

"No, I Don't!"

"Bastard!"

"Idiot!"

"Shut up, both of you!" Your mom slammed her hand on the table, making the whole house shake.

You two froze, paralyzed in fear of your mother.

The bell ringed suddenly ringed loudly. The sound of the bell, signaling that the troops came back, was music to your ears.

"Let's go!" You run our of the door, shrugging of the anger of your mother.

"H-HEY, WAIT! You two!" Her voice went unaudiable as, the distance between the both of you and your mom grew.

Caleb wasn't really interested in fighting the titans, but you were. You wanted to see and feel adventure. You wanted to take risks.

You were so excited! You dash like lightning through the streets of Shiganshina. Unfortunately, the crowd was too tall for you.

You stood on a crate, behind the many people that were watching the soldiers return from their departure. You too short to see, while Caleb on the other hand was tall enough.

Amongst the crowd was Eren. You smiled at him, and he smiled back. Mikasa glared at you with dead eyes.

Your smile morphed into a sorrowful frown, when you saw how badly everyone's injuries were. The soldiers' eyes were just depressed, filled with shame. So little of them returned. Where were the others? Devoured by the grotesque giants? Was this a failed expedition?

"They did make progress, didn't they?" you asked your brother with hopeful eyes.

Your brother cleared his throut nervously. He didn't know how to answer it to you, without making you feel bad.

"I-I'm afraid not... from t-the looks of it..." he stated under his breathe.

All you could do was watch with disappointment and sympathy.

"Moses! Moses! Moses Braun!" An old woman ran towards a man with short brown hair, riding a horse - and like the others that returned, had a sad and shameful expression across his face. "Excuse me, my son... where is my son, M-Moses Braun? What... What happened to him?!"

The woman was asking for her son, sweat running down her forehead. She was on her shaking knees. You knew exactly where her son was.

Your heart ached at the melancholic scene. It was just too sad. You wanted to run to avoid seeing the reaction of the woman, when she knows about what happened to her son.

"Bring it to her."
