Jessica couldn't stop looking through the big monitor that showed the course of the doughnut-shaped ship. In the background, Tony and Strange were discussing their options, but she wasn't listening to them. For one moment, Jessica stopped feeling chaos inside her mind and regarded how they were peacefully cruising through space. Stars were slowly passing by as more came into their frame. She thought about how amazing that was, that she could watch that exact landscape for the rest of eternity, for infinite hours.
Suddenly, the picture was disturbed. The vehicle turned on the spur of the moment, approaching a planet.
Tony walked next to the girl, perplexed by the unexpected movement. "Hey, what's going on?"
"I think we're in Titan." She said, remembering what Thanos' follower had said. The ship was programmed to meet the titan on that planet.
Stark put his arm in front of the young girl to make her back up. "Step back, Jessica. I don't think this rig has a self-park function. Pete, get your hand inside the steering gimbal. Close those around it. Do you understand?"
Peter did as he was told. "Yep, got it."
"This was meant for one big guy, so we gotta move at the same time."
"Okay, okay. Ready."
Jessica watched how they got closer and closer to the surface of the planet in horror. "We might wanna turn."
Peter backed her idea up and attempted to curve the ship's direction with all his strength. "Turn! Turn! Turn!"
The spaceship collapsed against the planet but thankfully Dr Strange cast a protection spell that prevented any of them to get hurt. Jessica did fall due to the unsteady landing.
Dr Strange offered his hand to help her get up. "You all right?"
"That was close." Tony said, placing his hand over the wizard's shoulder, appreciative. "I owe you one."
"Let me just say, if aliens wind up implanting eggs in my chest or something and I eat one of you, I'm sorry."
"I do not want another single pop culture reference out of you for the rest of the trip. You understand?" The billionaire looked directly at Jessica. "Jessica, do something about it."
The girl frowned at him. What was she suppose to do or say against that?
"I'm trying to say that something is coming."
Suddenly a loud sound was heard, making all the present members of the Avengers turn their heads in the same direction. A group of individuals had just gotten into the ship by creating a hole with some kind of explosives. The one who seemed to be their leader was wearing a mask and had boots with propulsors that allowed him to fly, almost in the same way that Jessica. He was also carrying a gun, but it wasn't anything like the guns they had back on Earth. He stepped up and yelled the name of the one he was looking for.
"Thanos!"
Jessica didn't know if they were on the titan's side or against it but when his two other companions proceeded to attack the heroes, she immediately prepared herself for combat.
The biggest creature out of the group of intruders was instantly engaged in a fight with Strange's cape. Jessica decided to ignore that scene, still a bit confused, and decided to attack the leader. She ran towards him and dodged his blaster shots. Once she was almost face to face to him, he lifted up, trying to avoid Jessica's grip. The girl decided to used her powers to pin him down on the ground. The guy groaned in pain before swiftly recomposing. He began shooting at her once more as she created a shield out of nanoparticles to protect herself from the blasts. Unfortunately, one of the shots hit Jessica right in her wrist. Thankfully, the suit protected her from being severely injured.
Since Jessica had been distracted by the incident, she had not realised that the guy had approached her enough to hit her on right on the face. She felt to the side, but before she could attack him back Tony had already committed to that purpose.
She got up and was about to help the Iron Man with the intruder when she heard Peter's voice.
"Please! Don't put your eggs in me!"
She found him crawling away from the third member of the strangers. She could tell it was a feminine figure, but the antennas on her forehead bewildered her.
Jessica stood between them and started fighting the alien girl. She intended to create another shield, but found herself unable to do so. That disconcerted her enough to not see the punch coming. However, this time Jessica did not fall back. She jumped on top of the alien to try and restrain her and she succeeded on that.
"Everybody stay where you are. Chill the eff out." She heard the leader speak to all of them as she got up, holding the alien girl hostage, just in case.
It turned out to be exactly the case when she saw the guy that had attacked her holding Peter hostage with his gun to the boy's head. Even though Jessica was mad at her boyfriend, she still didn't want anything to happen to him.
She held the intruder closer to her, making sure there was no way possible for her to run away. "Hey! Let him go!"
The guy did not bother to answer her. "I'm gonna ask you this one time. Where is Gamora?"
Jessica did not think about what he was demanding. She didn't care if that Gamora was another one of Thanos' followers. She just wanted Peter to be safe. Tony was the one that replied to him with a question of the same nature. "Yeah. I'll do you one better. Who's Gamora?"
The big creature that had previously struggled with Stange's cape decided to add to the conversation. He was also being restrained by Tony, who was pointing at his face with a weapon, but he didn't seem to matter. "I'll do you one better. Why is Gamora?"
The guy holding Peter pressed a button on his mask that revealed his face. He was human. "Tell me where the girl is or I swear to you I'm gonna French fry this little freak."
Alarmed, Jessica manually removed one of her gloves and held her hand dangerously close to the alien girl's face. "You shoot him and I'll kill her!" Everyone turned to her with their eyes wide open. "And trust me it won't be painless."
With a shaking voice and her hand holding onto Jessica's arm around her neck, the alien girl sensed she wasn't lying. "She's telling the truth."
"That's right." Said Tony, backing Jessica up, even though he was shocked at her threat.
"Oh, yeah? You don't wanna tell me where she is? That's fine." Said the man holding Peter hostage as he pressed his gun closer to the boy's head. "I'll kill all four of you and I'll beat it out of Thanos myself. Starting with you."
"Drop the weapon!" Jessica yelled when she heard the gun charging. She concentrated all her powers towards her bare hand, ready to poison her hostage if the man were to hurt Peter. "Now!"
Strange was the only one who had actually listened to the man's words. "Wait, what, Thanos? All right, let me ask you this one time. What master do you serve?"
"What master do I serve? What am I supposed to say? Jesus?" The guy answered, giving away that he was from the same planet as them.
"You're from Earth."
"I'm not from Earth, I'm from Missouri."
"Yeah, that's on Earth, dipshit." Tony insulted him. "What are you hassling us for?"
"So you're not with Thanos?" Jessica asked, still confused by the situation and unwilling to let her hostage go just yet.
"With Thanos? No, I'm here to kill Thanos. He took my girl. Wait, who are you?"
"We're the Avengers, man." Peter told him and he finally let him go. Jessica let the alien go as well, relieved. The alien didn't seem to be affected by what had just happened, instead, she showed interest in the conversation.
"Oh! You're the ones Thor told us about."
"You know Thor?" Jessica asked her.
"Yeah. Tall guy, not that good-looking, needed saving." The leader casually said and both Peter and Jessica frowned at his inaccurate description of the god.
"Where is he now?" Asked Tony.
The now harmless intruder walked towards Stark as he explained the events Thor had gone through. "Nidavellir. He said something about losing his weapon and he was going to build a new one..." Jessica listened to how their voices faded out in the distance since her attention was now focused on the housing unit for the nanoparticles of her suit. It was destroyed. The guy from Missouri had hit her right on her bracelet. Jessica inspected it for a minute to see if she could fix it.
"Shoot." She said under her breath as she tried to make it work. She didn't accomplish anything. She wasn't going to without their lab equipment. "My bracelet..."
"Jess..." Peter called her, making her look up from her wrist. "Were you really going to kill her?"
A little smile formed on her lips but she quickly shook her head and turned away from him. "Shut up..."
"What? It's nice that you would kill for me, I-I'm flattered." She tried to fix the bracelet one more time as the boy kept on insisting. "Please, Jess. Don't be mad. I just did it because I didn't want you to get hurt, I wanted to protect you. If something happened to you I would go crazy and blame myself." She finally turned to face him. "I couldn't leave you alone."
"That doesn't give you the right to drag me into this."
Peter tried to excuse himself. "But you were unconscious."
"F.R.I.D.A.Y. could have taken me home safe." Jessica replied. "You know, Thanos is looking for six stones and there's one on Earth. They are probably going to attack them. They also need help, I could've helped them. But instead, I'm in freaking outer space. How did you think we were going to go back?"
"Maybe-" Jessica pointed at him and stopped him from keeping on talking. She already knew what he was going to say.
"Don't say 'Mr Stark' because I will absolutely kill you." She threatened him. "Tony doesn't have the answer to everything. If you wanted to protect me you absolutely failed. I've never felt less safe in my life."
Peter sighed, exhausted and exasperated, as he watched her make her way to the other heroes. He didn't know how he was going to fix that.
