They looked at the last infinity stone being carefully placed on the finished nano gauntlet. Between Jessica, Bruce, Tony, and the talking raccoon, they had finally managed to create an object capable of wielding the stones' powers. Nonetheless, after the last of the gems found its place in the glove, the raccoon decided to exclaim, making everyone else present skip a beat.
"Boom!" He laughed.
Jessica jumped, still not used to seeing the animal act like a human. "Shit!"
"This is it..."
"Did it have to be red?" Jessica asked, earning a look from both Tony and Bruce. She knew exactly that the nanoparticles' colours could be changed.
They took the glove out of the lab and brought it to the room where all the remaining Avengers were. "Alright, the glove is ready." The raccoon said, making everyone gather around. "The question is: who's gonna snap the freaking fingers."
"I'll do it." Thor volunteered.
"Excuse me?"
The God of Thunder stepped towards the gauntlet, decided to put it on and do the job. They knew he needed to be stopped. "Wait-"
"Thor!" Exclaimed Lang. "We haven't decided who's gonna put that on."
"Oh, I'm sorry, were we just waiting around for the right opportunity?" He said, sarcastically.
"We should at least discuss it."
The god shook his head. "Sitting here, staring at the thing is not gonna bring everybody back. I'm the strongest Avenger, okay? So this responsibility falls upon me. Just let me do it."
Tony walked right in front of him. "It's not just the fact that that glove is channeling enough energy to light up a continent. I'm telling you, you're in no condition."
"What do you think is running through my veins right now?" Asked Thor and Jessica couldn't help but answer.
"Mayo?"
"Lightning." He answered to his own question, unbothered by Jessica's comment.
"Lighting won't help you pal." Said Bruce, making his way to the glove. "It's gotta be me. You saw what the stones did to Thanos. It almost killed him. None of you could survive."
"How do we know you will?"
"We don't," He answered, honestly. "but the radiation's mostly gamma. It's like... I was made for this."
Jessica reacted before he could touch the gauntlet. "If radiation is what almost killed him, then I might have a shot. "
Tony was quick to rise up against her. "Jessica, don't."
"I am immune to radiation." She reminded him.
"There's a lot of other components to it, it would kill you. Even if you're immune. Are you seriously gonna look at me in the eyes and tell me that you think you can handle the energy better than the Hulk?" She didn't reply. He was right, the Hulk was bigger in mass and would stand higher chances to survive the intensity of the snap. "That's what I thought."
He then looked at Banner, who took the gauntlet into his hands and prepared himself to wear it. "Good to go, yeah?"
"Let's do it."
Tony reminded him of what he had to do. "You remember everyone Thanos snapped away five years ago and just bringing them back to now, today. Don't change anything from the last five years."
"Got it."
"F.R.I.D.A.Y., do me a favor and activate protocol 8."
"Yes, boss." The A.I. system did as it was told, blocking all the entrances, windows and apertures of the compound. The heroes standing in the room braced themselves for the snap. They put on their helmets and Jessica created an energy shield to protect herself.
"Everybody comes home."
With that, Bruce put on the gauntlet, which adjusted to his size in a matter of seconds thanks to the nanotech it was made of. They saw him cry in pain as he assimilated the power of the stones. They thought it would take him a minute to adjust to the energy of the gauntlet, but it was taking much more than that.
"Take it off." Said Thor as he saw his friend in agony. "Take it off!"
"No, wait." Steve stopped him when he saw Banner's moans were diminishing. "Bruce, are you okay? Talk to me, Banner."
"I'm okay." He assured them, panting. "I'm okay." He raised his hand up and with one last scream, he snapped his fingers.
Immediately after it, the glove slipped off his hand and he fell backward. His arm was disfigured and almost half its original size. Seeing that, Jessica couldn't help but feel relieved that she didn't snap.
"Bruce!" She ran towards him to aid him, but Tony warned her before she could get too close.
"Don't move him." He sprayed a cold air-like fluid substance over his arm. Bruce seemed to be less in pain after Tony had helped him.
"Did it work?" Steve asked.
"Worth a shot." Thor comforted his friend Banner. "It's over. It's okay."
"Guys... I think it worked!"
For some reason, Jessica felt the need to look up. There was something, a presence. At first, she thought it might have been everyone who was dusted coming back. But then she looked up.
And she saw it coming towards them.
A giant spaceship was hovering over the headquarters and it was shooting at them. The first impact finally came, destroying the whole building in just one strike. It made a deep hole in the room where they just were, all the way to the subsoil. Thankfully, Jessica did not fall into the hole. She coughed, feeling a sharp pain in her back whenever she tried to exhale.
"Jessica! You okay?" She heard Tony call her as she kept coughing. Once she was done, he already made it to her side.
"Yeah."
"That's my girl."
She tried to get up but felt that she was laying on something really uncomfortable. "What the..." When she rolled over she unveiled Cap's shield.
"I told him to never lose it again." Tony sighed and offered her his hand to help her get up. She looked around. The compound was totally destroyed. Her eyes landed on an opening to the outside, where Thor was standing still, staring at something.
"Thor?" She called him, walking towards him. Once she saw what he was looking at, she felt a raging energy take over her body.
Five years.
She thought to herself. Five years of suffering. Five years of grief. The five worst years. And all because of the titan staring back at them.
"That son of a bitch."
"Jessica! Don't!" Her first instinct had been to attack him but she had been stopped by Tony. "Focus!" He demanded her. "Look for the Gauntlet! Don't let anyone take the stones."
Jessica looked at him and then looked at Thanos. Even though she wanted to be the one to kill him. Even though she wanted to make him suffer as much as she had, she nodded her head and left, following Tony's orders.
The anger made her focus. The first thing she did was to go find her weapon. She was going to need it, at least she was right on this one. She found it in the lab and took it with her, as well as her cadmium bullets. Then she tried to reconstruct what just happened, tried to think where the gauntlet might have ended. She looked around the room where Banner had snapped only to find nothing there. Then she looked into the hole in the middle of the room. It could only have gone down. Carefully, but not too slowly, she started to go down into the abyss. She kept on going on until she made it to the subterranean tunnels. Before she could even decide which way to go, an explosion surprised her and Clint came running in her direction, finding her and dragging her along with him.
"Clint!" She yelled as she ran with him. It didn't take her too long to find out he was carrying the gauntlet and they were being chased by alien creatures. Thanos' creatures.
They found a vertical tunnel, a way to escape. "Go up!"
With the help of her powers, Jessica started to levitate up the tunnel, while Clint used a cable hooked to his belt. The creatures had caught them up and were trying to get a grasp of them. Jessica shot them with her brand new weapon. She didn't think it would be that powerful, but the first shot made a hole the size of her fist into one of the creatures' head. Clint, with his katana, also contributed to killing them and in no time, they weren't being chased anymore. They made it up the tunnel and laid on the floor, breathless.
"What..." Panted Jessica. "the heck were those?" Suddenly, she found a familiar face looking down at her. "Nebula..." She took the gauntlet and Jessica allowed it. Because it was Nebula.
But Nebula wasn't on their side. "Father. I have the stones."
"What?!" Both Jessica and Clint exclaimed and looked at each other. Nebula pointed her gun at Clint, who was unarmed, and Jessica pointed hers at Nebula.
"Stop." Someone said, interrupting the scene. A girl with green skin entered the dark room, also pointing a gun at Nebula.
"You're betraying us?" Nebula asked the girl.
Jessica yelled at her. "You're betraying us!"
"You don't have to do this." Behind the green girl, a second Nebula appeared. Clint, taking advantage that they were distracted, moved away from bad Nebula, going next to Jessica.
"I am... this." The Nebula holding the gauntlet said.
"No, you're not."
"You've seen what we become."
"Nebula, listen to her." Demanded the green girl, almost in a cry. "You can change."
"He won't let me." Bad Nebula held her gun firmly, ready to pull the trigger. Yet, before she could, the other Nebula shot her.
"No!"
Facing that incident, Jessica took the gauntlet from the now dead Nebula. She looked at Clint, expecting him to tell her what to do. "What am I supposed to do with this?"
"Let's find Cap. He'll know what to do."
They made their way out only to find an army that evidently outnumbered them. Jessica walked next to the rest of the Avengers. As she was getting to the center of the battlefield, Thanos finally saw her, carrying the gauntlet. She dared to glare at him waiting for him to attack. If he did, she would defend the stones and avenge everything she lost. Even if it took her life to do it.
She waited for the titan to move. But he never did. Instead, he stared at something behind her.
Out of nothing, yellow circles appeared only to open up portals to different locations. From these portals, everyone, every single avenger that got dusted walked out. Now their armies were balanced and the fight was ready to begin. Steve, leading their new troops stepped forwards. "Avengers..."
"Assemble!"
