two
When I awoke I was in a hospital bed, my side was healed.
No scar.
I felt the back of my head as well, only for my hand to pull away, this time without the splatter of crimson.
A woman with a butterfly pin accenting the dark of her hair looked to me with a small smile.
"I'll go tell Dazai you're awake, yes?" She asked.
I just nodded.
I didn't know anyone else, nor where I was.
This place was definitely not a hospital, that was for sure.
"I'm Yosano. I'm the one that healed you. Lucky you were asleep, otherwise it would have been dreadfully painful." She said, whistling slightly as she went to the door.
Dazai and Atsushi appeared almost immediately afterwards.
"Well rise and shine beautiful." Dazai smiled.
I just smiled slightly, looking at my hands.
"What happened?"
"You blacked out, and then our doctor Yosano made you feel better with her gift." Dazai explained, as I just nodded, and looked around the room.
It was decorated simply, and from the window I could make out we were at least one level above ground.
The only exit point was the main door.
Why was that relevant?
If these people wanted to hurt me, they would have done so by now.
"Where am I?" I asked.
"You're in the infirmary at the Armed Detective Agency office- you may have heard of them?" Atsushi explained.
"Not really." I mumbled.
"It's an operation that deals with criminals and cases which normal police can't deal with. Everyone in the unit is gifted. Ability users like yourself." Dazai commented.
"I wouldn't say my gift is very helpful. No idea how to use it." I mentioned, shrugging.
"Ah.. I thought as much. So is it just used as a reflex then?" Dazai asked, tilting his head as it lay in his hands.
"Not really. It just comes out randomly." I said quietly.
Why was he prying so much?
He was probably just curious.
Plus, the ADA was full of gifted individuals. He probably wanted to figure out where I stood amongst them.
Atsushi looked to Dazai.
"Should we tell her?" He whispered.
"I can hear you y'know." I commented.
"Good one Atsushi! But yeah, we probably should.. there is a reason why we brought you back here, other than to heal you, Y/N." Dazai began.
"You see, files of you and your ability suddenly appeared in the database. All over the world. What I'm confused about is it mentioned something about a duo-ability user. That you had two. But that's not important right now."
"What's important is that you need to be kept safe. There is a bounty on your head, Y/N." Atsushi finished.
"A bounty? As in money? But no one knew about me.." I whispered, my voice trailing off.
"We have been trying to track down the person who released this information, but to no avail we have not found them." Dazai sighed.
"So does that mean I'm stuck on the run.." I said, my voice half a whine as I hid my hands in my face.
"Well, kind of.. but it won't be that bad I'm sure!" Atsushi said, feebly attempting to comfort me.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed, half standing up as I stretched, limbs aching from the thin bed.
Dazai turned to me, the laughter and playful gleam in his eyes gone, like before.
"Y/N L/N, it's not safe for you to stay out alone. You've got a choice. You stay here and join the Armed Detective Agency. Or you leave here, and get picked up by the dogs of the Port Mafia, and become like them. After that, you'll be our enemy. We can't protect you anymore." Dazai said, frowning my way.
"I wish I could just choose that easily- why can't I just keep living my normal life.." I whispered.
"It's just not safe." Atsushi added.
"Why? Because they know about my abilities?? They only know because of some stupid file, and who knows where that came from! They didn't even know what I looked like until I bumped into you!" I exclaimed, feeling my voice rise.
"Y/N, it wasn't our fault.." Dazai started.
"I bumped into Atsushi, when he was with you, and accidentally activated my stupid ability! Right when he passed by! Akutagawa or whatever, he saw me, I told him my name, and just like that, they know who I am!" I yelled back, my heart racing.
"Please just calm down!" Atsushi exclaimed in panic.
That's when I noticed my hands glowing.
My abilities were about to act up, if I didn't control myself.
If the second one came into play, I don't know what I would do.
I can't afford being haunted by any more faces.
So I did what any rational person would do.
I jumped at Dazai, praying he would cancel everything out.
That's when I hit my head, and it went black.
"Y/N! Y/N!" I heard voices calling.
They sounded so distant, as I blinked wearily, the world a dim haze of colour.
"Dazai how many times have I told you to not knock guests out!" A blonde man yelled.
"She jumped at me and I was flustered! It was an instinct I swear!" Dazai was whining back.
Atsushi had me in his hands.
"Ah you've got to be shitting me." I whispered, feeling the pounding ache in my head.
The blonde looked to me.
"I'm so sorry, Miss Y/N, about Dazai. The idiot knocked you out in self defence when you're here as a guest, in the infirmary." He said, his tone apologetic.
"My name is Kunikida. I'm just as curious as these two are about you. But you heard Dazai. You either join us, or go to the Port Mafia. Due to the mass of money on your head, they would probably sell you off to the highest bidder, unless they found a use for you here." Kunikida explained briefly.
"Can I have time to like, think it over? I also really need to get to work, if I get fired I'll never be able to go to college at this rate." I said, standing up awkwardly.
"We've already called in sick for you. So don't worry about it." Dazai smiled sheepishly.
Kunikida glared at him.
"Don't test me Dazai." He half yelled.
"But yes we can give you time. The only worry is that the Port Mafia will come for you. You are clearly of high importance, as they sent Akutagawa after you first. So it's best we keep you guarded, if that's okay. Either Atsushi or Dazai would be fine, as you know them more." Kunikida said briefly, adjusting his glasses before looking in his book.
"I'm very sorry but I must go. Take care Y/N."
With that he left, leaving me with the two boys who started this agony and pain.
Although, they were just trying to do the right thing.
"I'm leaving. One of you can come if you want, I don't really mind. But..." I said, my voice trailing as the realisation of everything hit.
People were going to try and get me.
Just because someone told them I have two abilities.
I never wanted to use that second one again.
But I knew it was most likely I would have to use it again one day.
I didn't know that day would come so soon.
