Chapter 3

[Wendy Byer and Amy Monahan]

I suspect Amy is still angry at her family. The fact that she didn't go back to them after two weeks is making me believe that their relationship took a plunge for good.

I really care for her, but she is in a bad state of mind. She needs to stay away from here and the pointless drama in this house. Every day, there are issues with some inmates. She doesn't need all the stress from this drama.

The only thing I can do now is to try and convince her to go back to her parents' house; however, she won't relent on this matter. Maybe they don't want her anymore, or they hide a painful secret. Who knows?

By the way, as soon as my alarm tone rings in the house, I remember that I have to go and find Sim Daejung. I promised I'd return him fifty dollars he lent me for a gift a while ago and have since felt indebted with him. I don't want to pass off as someone who doesn't keep her promises.

As soon as I'm about to leave and go find him, someone knocks at the door. I'm pretty sure it's him. He's never late when it comes to dues, especially in such a difficult situation. I don't blame him for that; after all, we're all supposed to do our part.

"Wendy! Are you here?"

It's clearly him. I don't know many other people with a such low-pitched voice as him. I have to admit I like it; it's pleasant to hear and gives me good vibes.

Okay, I really need to snap out of my fantasy and open the door.

"Hi, come in. Or are you just in for the fifty dollars?" I ask out of the blue, before realizing that I'm embarrassing myself.

He grins. "Oh, yeah, the bucks. Take your time, Wendy. It's not that I need them right now." I believe he's being sarcastic. I know he hasn't got a full-time job yet and makes do with what he can earn from doing other people well-paid favors. (I don't know what these "favors" consist of and should be ready to consider every single option.)

I scoff. "Drop the sarcasm, Daejung. You know I hate when you act like that." I point a finger at him to emphasize my frustration at his attitude, but he doesn't take my stance seriously enough and bursts laughing.

"Seriously, Wendy? Now that you put it in these terms, then give me the money, right now!" he says in a fake pouty tone which, while irritating me at first, also causes me to laugh back at him.

I extract a fifty dollar bill from my pocket and hand it to him. As soon as he takes it, I expect him to leave and myself to have some well deserved peace.

It turns out I'm wrong. He clearly wants to stay. I don't know his intention, but his presence here in this moment is bad news. If Amy finds out he's here, she'll be even more pissed off.

"Are you going to go or what?" I ask, hoping that he uses some common sense and realize I'm not exactly supposed to talk to him. He, however, shakes his head.

"No. I have an offer for you, something I'm sure you will accept," he says, showing off a grin that somehow makes me regret returning his money. He's acting too cocky for my liking right now.

"What offer?" I reply back, annoyed at his insistence. Even though I cross my arms, he doesn't understand that he really needs to go before he crosses paths with Amy.

"This pandemic is getting on everyone's nerves, especially mine. People lose their loved ones, their jobs, and sometimes even their dignity," he explains. I have to admit, he had me at 'dignity.'

He goes on. "So, I thought of a good way to make amends for causing trouble since I moved here." Okay, why is he admitting that he has wrecked havoc all this time? Does he have second intentions? Oh, come on! Have a little faith in him!

"I'm trying to see if someone is up for a little game. You know, like the ol' good Truth or Dare, Two Truths and a Lie, Plead the Fifth and all that shit." Truth or Dare? This is going to be interesting. He really has me for good.

"I'm in." I mutter enthusiastically. He doesn't even try to stop me from jumping all over the place out of happiness. It takes me two minutes as a whole to calm down. "Sorry, I got a little emotional. I love Truth or Dare!"

"Oh, good, I'm happy you like my idea. See you on Friday. At my place. Oh, and bring Amy." He leaves immediately after pronouncing those two last words without letting me reply back. Why did he have to bring Amy in this game? She won't be happy at all!

Oh, screw Amy and her mood swings. She is an emotional trainwreck and, as such, needs a distraction. Is there nothing better than an old good role game?

She'd agree with me if it weren't for Sim Daejung. She's so prejudiced against him. It all happened because of an incident where he broke a tea cup from her grandmother's precious collection just a few days after moving here. She was so pissed off that, despite his apologies, she curses him out every time she sees him.

To add fuel to the fire, she didn't call her father out directly once when he muttered some racist bullshit after Daejung bumped into him and tripped him purely by mistake. Even with a high dose of apologies, resentment has since grown inside that man, to that point that Amy's attempts to calm him down end up in failure.

I really need to make this clear, though. Amy isn't racist. Only her father is. She only dislikes Sim Daejung. She doesn't like that I try to be civil with him because she thinks that he's trying to lure me into becoming his friends. I love her, but she really needs to change her attitude.

This is why I don't even hesitate to open the door of her room without knocking. "Amy, are you here?"

"Oh, hi, Wendy... you know, knocking isn't an option," she points out, but I ignore her.

"Can we talk? It's urgent." I plead, hoping that this time she'll listen.

"If it's about my parents, then n-"

I shake my head. "No, Amy, it's not about them. Don't worry. I understand perfectly."

"Then, what is it about?" she asks as she grows impatient.

"Well, you know Sim Daejung, right?" She glares at me as soon as I pronounce his name, but I just grown. "Listen, Amy, he did claim his money and I gave him back, but also invited me for a game at his place."

"What game?" Surprisingly, she hasn't raised her voice. Trying to keep her cool must be such a hard exercise for her, but now that I tested my luck, there's no turning back.

"He didn't tell me exactly what's its name, but said it's similar to Truth and Dare and the other games we used to play," I reply, bracing myself for the worst. "I don't know who else he invited, but I'm sure he called in some friends from the other blocks. And-"

She cuts me off. "Is this a way for him to try and get to know people better?" she asks suspiciously.

"Yes... kind of. Let's see this as a way for all of us to try and get to know each other better." I give her my most reassuring smile, but she just frowns. As I expected, she doesn't look convinced, but at least I tried.

I leave her room without turning back. I don't think she'll change her mind about Daejung, but, one way or another, she'll have to listen to me soon.
