Chapter 7~Homecoming Dance

It took us about one and a half hours to reach the venue. As we climbed out of the car in a classy fashion, like the ones we see in movies and shows, the aroma of delicious food and desserts filled the air from miles away.

As we padded closer to the entrance, which already had a huge line, I saw swarms of people decked out, girls in expensive and stunning dresses, and guys in fancy tuxedos. Clusters of people separately grouped and taking photographs and a few stragglers, trying to find their dates or groups, filled the venue.

The music filled the air with serenity. The DJ perfectly combined and played the true classics and the current upbeat tunes simultaneously, howling "It's homecoming y'all!" every once in a while once the venue was filled enough with people to get lost amongst them easily.

We entered the hall, his hand still holding my hand, and greeted a few people in the hallway on our way. It wasn't long until I found Veronica and a few girls walking towards us.

Do they come as a complementary with her? I sometimes wondered to myself.

"Oh... My... God! Maya! You look absolutely stunning." She complimented, checking me out from head to toe. Her O-M-Gs always gave me the major Janice vibes.

"Thank you! And so do you." I complimented her back honestly.

"Aww! Thank you, girl! By the way, love your makeup. Who did that by the way? If it is some professional, pass me the number girl."

"I didn't do any makeup. I just applied eyeliner and lipstick." I informed satirically.

Her face frowned, clearly revealing she did not believe it.

Not that I cared about that.

"Oh, Good for you." She said, before turning to Shawn, who was, for I didn't know how long, pursing his lips to hold his laugh on the squabble, "Hey, Shawn! You look so handsome tonight."

"Thank you. You look lovely as well, Valentina."

"It's Veronica" she corrected, cocking her eyebrow.

I couldn't help but laugh under my breath. He surely did that on purpose.

"Oops! My bad." He said, looking away, trying to find anything to hold onto just to stop talking to her.

"Excuse me, I need to use the restroom." He said and took off immediately when he couldn't find anything.

She gave me a clueless look before leaving to join her other girlfriends.

I wandered around the food stalls, trying to figure what exactly to start with since they all looked heavenly. Did I forget to mention I was a gourmand?

I loved to eat. I could legit eat everything set on the table even when I'm not hungry. Though I wouldn't do it here. I didn't want to embarrass myself any further.

I would always be seen eating something every hour or so. I couldn't help it. It was a trait. Anyway, back to the topic.

While I was struggling to choose between pasta and ambrosia, my pondering was cut short by a too familiar voice. Again.

"Maya!" He called, creeping right towards me, "Don't you look stunning tonight?"

Not him again. Not tonight.

Bradley stood beside me, scanning which dish I was about to pick.

"You're gonna have that?" he asked, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.

"Yes, I am." I picked both the bowls and escorted them to the nearest empty seat.

He followed me instantly. Does he not understand signs?

I champed the pasta intentionally so that he would understand more distinctly that I didn't want him there, sitting beside me.

"You didn't comment on how I am looking tonight, Matthews." He pointed out.

Even if you wear the fanciest outfit in the world, you would still look like a jerk to me.

"Didn't I? Oh, my bad." I acted obliviously. "You look... uh... you look good."

He smirked at me at my remark.

Is he stupid? Or did he forget to grab his brain from his room on the way out?

"Just good, eh? Wasn't exactly the compliment I was expecting, but I'll take what I get."

Oh, I bet you will.

He got up from his seat and walked a few steps ahead before turning towards me. He extended his hand, bowing down, and asked, "Would you like to dance?"

No no no no no! I don't want to have my first dance with HIM! Doesn't he have a date to get back to?

Before I could come up with an excuse, Shawn walked in right in between the conversation.

Never had I felt so relieved to see Shawn barging in anywhere he wanted.

"Excuse me, gentleman." sarcastically remarking, he acknowledged, "She's my date and I'm supposed to be her first dance tonight." He informed, enunciating every single word.

I watched Bradley's face turn sour at the sugarcoated confrontation.

"Uh...Well... I guess I shall leave you guys to it." He said and trailed off.

We exchanged a look for a while before bursting out in laughter.

"Oh my God! That was so savage!" I exclaimed.

"One of my many talents." He bragged, with a smug look on his face.

"Aren't you a self-flatterer?" I mocked.

"Well, that comes in handy when you have a bunch of skills."

I shook my head in incredulity. He was unbelievable!

He walked two steps forward, dramatically making a turn to face me. He extended his left hand, making eye contact, and charmingly asked, "May I have this dance, gorgeous?"

He could be quite a charmer when he wanted to.

"You certainly may." I agreed, smiling brightly.

He took my hand and escorted me onto the dance floor.

Call it my awful misfortune but the moment we stepped in, the music instantly changed from jazz to a slow song.

Great. Just great.

Shawn let out a soft chuckle and led me to a good spot that wasn't too crowded.

He placed his right hand behind my shoulder and I instinctively wrapped my left arm around his lifted arm and placed my hand around his bicep. We both brought our other arm up and clasped our hands together.

Before we knew it, we started swaying to the beat of the song. We only slow danced for a few minutes for what felt like hours.

His eyes locked with mine, his intense gaze sending a chill through my spine.

"Why do you hate me, Maya?" He asked in a soft voice, his eyes still gazing at me.

I was taken aback by his unexpected question. Where did that come from?

"I don't hate you. I never hated you in the first place." I answered sincerely in a soft voice.

"But you don't exactly like me either."

"Umm.." I thought for a moment about what to answer before finally admitting, "There were moments when you were a little... umm... unbearable." I replied, trying to hold my smile, dodging, and answering the question at the same time.

He cocked his eyebrows and smirked at me.

"And how many moments, to be accurate?"

"Almost all of them," I replied, winking at him.

Before I could see his reaction, he spun me around, placed his hand in the middle of my upper back, and dipped me.

"That was awesome!" I exclaimed after standing back on my feet.

"Was that your first time?" He inquired as he noticed that stupid grin on my face.

“I mean, if my Disney price from my dream does not count, then yes.”

He chuckled.

"Well, then I am honored." He replied, bowing down.

I let out a soft chuckle and bowed down as well.

"Shall we move on to the best part?" He asked.

I raised my eyebrow in puzzlement. "And what that might be?"

"Food!" He replied enthusiastically.

Without waiting for another second, I grabbed his hand and directed him in the direction of the food stall, "Off we go!"
                                   ~

After we spoiled our appetite with a satisfactory substantial meal, we made our way to the backyard to breathe in some fresh air.

Surprisingly, the backyard was deserted and for the first time, I didn't encounter a hot couple engrossed with their make-out sessions. I always had this really bad timing of walking into a make-out session, leaving me awkward. Anyway, we walked towards a huge tree, decorated with string lights, made ourselves comfortable, and sat down.

I massaged my foot, trying to relieve the pain caused by wearing heels. How do people even walk in this thing for hours?

I placed my hand on the base of my neck and started pressing it to relax my tensed body.

Putting the fun aside, this thing was exhausting.

Shawn stretched his arms and lied down on his back while I sat still.

Nobody exchanged a word for a few moments. We enjoyed the silence appreciating its tranquility.

Shawn cracked the silence after a while. "Sorry for being such a jerk to you for the last few days." He apologized in a low voice. His eyes sincerely looked right at me.

"Oh, do you mean about the other day? Or the day before. Or the one before that?" I teased, trying to lighten the mood.

"You know what I mean."

"Hmm... Let me think."

"Oh come on! Don't act like there are so many!"

I raised my eyebrows at him with a devilish grin.

"Is that so? Should I do the honors to cast some light on that very topic, Mr. Shawn Daniels?"

He raised his eyebrow in return.

"Remember when..." I started.

I sluggishly walked towards my locker as I felt grumpy since I binge-watched my favorite show 'The Vampire Diaries' till 4 a.m and was forced to get up at 7 a.m! Urgh.

As I reached the locker with a hazy vision, I started spinning the numbers on the dial that I've memorized by heart by now. I pressed to unlock it. It didn't work.

I cocked my eyebrows at it. What the hell?

I spun it again. It still didn't work. I scratched my head pondering until I scrutinized it.

I cannot read a single thing! It was a white-out. Someone white-out the freaking numbers on the dial!

Some smart ass pulled out a prank on me!

Before I could guess who would even pull such a stunt on me, I heard Shawn chuckling from behind.

I should have known better.

"Happy April Fool's Day, Tinkerbell!" He said with his tone flowing with sarcasm.

"It's September, you jackass!" I howled.

"But my prank was due." He said and walked off immediately.

Scumbag!

"And..." I continued,

We sat by the kitchen counter when Shawn was done with his practice. I was trying to explain to him the formation of the image through a mirror and lens for the umpteenth time while he was determined to distract himself by looking around and checking his phone.

"Okay!" I said, pursing my lips, "Let's take a break."

"Yes, finally! That's what I was thinking." He said, jumping out of his seat, smiling at me a little too brightly.

"I am hungry." He admitted.

"There might be something in the fridge. Let me check." I said.

I got up from my seat but was interrupted shortly after.

"Don't bother." he said, taking out something from his bag, "I have biscuits."

"Oreo!"

"Haha, yes. I have it during my practice."

"Are you even allowed to do it?" I asked, taking out a piece.

"During practice? No." raising an eyebrow, he added, "and that's exactly why."

I shook my head, chuckling.

"Hey, I've to use the restroom real quick. Will be back right away." He stated and took off.

I munched the biscuit while looking down on my notebook and that's when I felt something weird.

I took it out of my mouth and separated the cookie, only to find it filled with toothpaste!

No wonder why it tasted like mint.

That asshole!

"SHAWN!"

"Do you want to hear another tale of how you were determined to make my already messy life more miserable? Because right now I can think of a few more." I teased satirically.

"No that would be enough. I get it." He said apologetically.

"Do you?"

He nodded with sincerity.

"Why did you even start it in the first place? I mean what did you get out of it?" I asked in puzzlement.

He just shrugged.

"What?"

"Even if I tell you, you would call it silly, and maybe it is, but in my own weird way, I got what I wanted." He said, winking at me.

Wait what?

"Okay, now you got me curious. Tell me what it is?" I demanded.

"In my own weird way," he continued, "I wanted you to think about me."
