The Chain Cobra
"We love to be wrapped in our beds."
"Snuggling our pillows with our heads"
"If we keep our eyes open for the night"
"Then we feel the wrath of the chain cobra's bite"
"So please, say good night..."
Hey, the names Joshua. I would like to tell you something....You're not safe right now. How you ask? Let me tell you a story. I was only 10 years old when this happened. A young boy walking home in the evening time from school. I had gotten detention for spilling milk all over the cafeteria floor. Don't ask how that happened please...It was frustrating enough. A phone call home is all that's needed for my parents to get ticked off. They never liked getting calls from school. Anyways, It was a dreadful walk home. I had sweat marks all over my bright blue polo shirt and my feet were cramping. Not to mention the punishment that probably awaited for me at home. With all this in mind, I finally approached the crosswalk that would eventually lead me home. When I had walked across the street, I smelled something funny. It was a mixture of berries and cinnamon. Something you don't smell together often.
I looked behind me and saw nothing but paper floating in the wind. It felt quite odd since there was an ice cream shop behind me. But I visit there every Saturday with my family. We always take a good look at the menu and I had never seen a single flavor that was a mixture of berry and cinnamon. I shrugged and continue walking. The smell got even stronger as I walked down the last street to my house. It was almost like a strong perfume that was clogging my sinuses. It was starting to get irritating.
2 minutes of walking down my street and I finally made it to my house. I looked at the gate as if it was barbed wire. I didn't want to open it. I knew the punishment would be bad. But worrying about it was even worse. I opened the gate and went to the front door. I checked my pockets for my house key, but couldn't find it. So I ended up using the spare key that was on the side of the mailbox near the front window. I put the key in, but the door opened itself.
When I looked forward, I saw nothing but the sun's light illuminating through the kitchen. Everything else was pitch black. I could barely even see the wooden floors. I took a step inside and almost slipped. I swiftly grabbed the door handle and was able to catch myself from falling. When I looked down, I saw golden liquid.
The smell gave off the same thing I've smelled for miles. This time, it was making my eyes water. I jumped over the puddle of golden liquid and continued towards the stairs. Not even 3 steps in and I hear a sliding sound from the hallway. It sounded like something was being dragged. Like clothes being scraped against the wooden floors. It made my teeth hurt. I made my way up the stairs and quickly shifted my vision towards the hallway.
Nothing. Not even a scratch on the floor for evidence of what I just heard. I felt my ankles bounce a little. I took three more steps till I heard a "hiss". I looked down and saw a trail of golden liquid leading to my room. When I looked at it, I thought: "How did this all appear so quickly?" This thought didn't last long when I felt a cold, slimy metal touch my elbow. I jerked up and saw nothing. My eyes were dilated from the adrenaline. I looked behind me and the golden liquid was gone. I took a couple of steps back and almost fell backwards. My left leg was twitching. I slowly clenched my fists before walking to the front door of my room. My hand was like a snail making it across a leaf. Touching that doorknob felt like a blizzard taking over my body. I opened it slowly.
I see you. The moonlight is shining through the room. You look like a baby in a cradle. Safely sleeping away. But I know you aren't really sleeping. Your eyes are still open from insomnia.
We love to be wrapped in our beds
Snuggling our pillows with our heads
If we keep our eyes open for the night,
Then we feel the wrath of the chain cobra's bite....
So please, say good night...
To your body.
