Violet's POV: (Day of her Death)
Dear Diary,
I know I haven't been consistent with my journaling, but something is off. Scratch that—everything is off. Let me start from the beginning of the day.
It was a day off from school, so I took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in. Usually waking up at 7 am, this time, I allowed myself to sleep until 11.
As I was deep in slumber, my father discreetly attempted to open the door to my room. The creaking noise from my door prompted me to open an eye and direct my gaze to the person responsible for the noise.
He noticed his failed attempt at being discreet and said, "Why aren't you at school? It's already 11 for crying out loud," his tone hostile as he took in my disheveled morning appearance—blankets wrapped around me, hair a disheveled mess, and squinting because I didn't have my glasses on.
It struck me as odd that my father, typically neglectful and indifferent to my school routine, would come into my room. He has never stepped foot into my room so why now?
Furrowing my eyebrows, It seemed like he scolded me to cover up the initial reason for his intrusion into my room.
Normally, it's my mom who wakes me up if I ever happened to be late and my father wouldn't bother to wake me if I was late.
His gaze then landed on the envelope Emma had given me and it stayed there for an instant and then his gaze met mine. The envelope was still unopened out of laziness.
Since Emma's departure, she had pretty much ghosted me, and assuming the letter was some kind of heartfelt goodbye, I chose not to read it. "I have the day off.
Now, can you close the door, please? I'm trying to make the most of my day off," I mumbled before turning over and burying my face in my pillows with a deep and exhausted sigh.
He nodded in understanding, though I couldn't see him, and a second later, I heard the door quietly close. This unusual behavior left me wondering, "What about that letter caught his attention?" Before I could conjure up any hypotheses, I fell back asleep.
Later that day, around 1 pm, I finally got up and got ready, tidying up my room and storing the envelope in a drawer. The next peculiar incident occurred when I heard a clicking sound as I tidied up—a sound similar to when something started recording.
While my parents did have security cameras around the house, none were in the rooms or bathrooms. Brushing it off to avoid creeping myself out, I finished tidying my room.
Eden, my older cousin whom I considered a sister, then came over to my house the same day and we hung out a bit.
Later on, my parents called me down and informed me that I'd be staying at my grandparents' cottage for a while. This announcement left me perplexed.
My parents were well aware of my aversion to cottages, dating back to a few years ago when a family trip to a cabin resulted in uncomfortable beds, bug bites, and a river with murky brown water nearby.
My first cabin experience had been far from enjoyable, and I had hoped it would be my last.
Before I could voice my protest, my mom intervened, saying, "Look, I know you aren't the biggest fan of cottages, but your grandparents reached out, and they miss you, considering how long it's been."
I absorbed her words. It had indeed been a while since I'd seen my grandparents on my mothers side.
However, the suddenness of the decision felt unsettling to me. I questioned, "Are you two coming as well? You keep saying 'I.'"
They remained silent. "So, Macy isn't going?" I inquired. My father shook his head no. This felt odd—no, it was downright weird.
They had never mentioned any of this to me. At the very least, a heads-up about missing two weeks of school would have been appreciated. "Okay, when am I leaving?" I asked.
They informed me that it would be tonight, which only deepened my confusion. Why so early? Couldn't it wait? Deciding I needed a moment alone to process this, I told them I was going to start packing. That's exactly what I wanted to do.
