"MY BELIEF IS THAT YOU LAUGH AT RACISM, AND THAT'S HOW IT GOES AWAY."
- Sung Kang

MI-YOUNG PARK WAS EXCITED.

She was excited to move to a new city, a new school, to meet new people, and to make new friends.

Mi-young loved new.

Busan will always be her home, but Mi-young knew bigger and better things were awaiting her in America.

As she stepped out of her new dwelling, the sun blazed down on her.

While her alabaster skin absorbed the fiery gaze, she feared she would lose her beautiful pale complexion.

With the beating inferno slowly melting her, she mentally scolded her brother for taking too long to get ready.

What's he doing that's taking him so damn long?

As if the front steps of the Park's humble abode was a catwalk, Jimin sauntered down the steps, painfully slow if Mi-young might add, to greet his younger sister with his dazzling smile.

"It's about time. What took you so long? It's school, you know, not a some sort of fashion show."

Glancing at her brother's bright apparel, Mi-young slightly gagged at the nauseatingly flashy and exposing clothes her brother managed to put on.

"Hey, it's not my fault I'm trying to make a good impression on my first day. One of us has to bring glory to the Park name around here, and it's not going to be you, clearly."

Mi-young glanced down at her more clean, pristine, and conservative attire.

"If I wanted to grab a pair of scissors and cut up all my clothes, then I would, but only idiots would wear what you're wearing."

"Just you wait and see Mi-young. It's called style, something you clearly know nothing of."

With an eye roll, she decided to skip over anything vexatious Jimin could possibly muster.

"Can we get going? I'm not trying to get tan on the first day"

Jimin cocked his eyebrow up with surprise.

"But people here like being tan! Having pasty skin is a Korean thing Mi-young."

"Well I prefer this pasty skin of mine because I think it's beautiful and so does mom."

In order to avoid anymore pointless bickering, Jimin took the lead in walking the duo down to school.

While walking into the busy and buzzing halls of school, there were many whispers about who the new Asian couple was.

They must be excited to meet us, they sure are talking a lot about us.

Jimin shoved Mi-young out of her thoughts and waved her farewell as he strode his way in search of where to go first.

Mi-young noticed the sign titled Main Office' and assumed that she was supposed to pick up her schedule there.

Idiot, he didn't even realize we needed to pick up our schedules before going anywhere.

As Mi-young mentally scolded her brother for being so careless, she picked up her schedule and noticed her first period was art class.

Mi-young was always fond of art. She found herself at peace while she delved deep into oblivion of the outside world as she drew to her heart's content.

Dashing through the doors of the art studio, she placed her belongings at the front of the room. She was the first one there, just the way she liked it.

Early bird gets the worm right?

As students started to shuffle in, she couldn't help but feel giddy inside.

She almost missed the teacher's instructions for the first activity of the day as she daydreamed about what her new life here would entail.

Drawing portraits of our partner? How easy!

She took note of the boy next to her and studied his features closely.

As she was sketching the boy's face, she noticed the boy skipped drawing her eyes as he finished drawing the last few strokes of her hair.

Well this is new.

Mi-young frowned as the boy failed to draw in her eyes.

Maybe he's saving the best for last?

When it was time to exchange their drawings with one another, she took the opportunity to ask the longstanding question that pestered her mind.

"How come you didn't draw my eyes?"

The boy stared at her as if she was asking what day of the week it was.

It was as if she asked a question with such an obvious answer.

"Because I draw what I see. And I don't see any eyes."

"Exus—"

"Can you even see at all?"

Mi-young gasped at such a rude response.

"Yes I can see, you asshole."

The boy's eyes widened at her words.

"Hey, it was just a joke! Chill out, you don't need to get all defensive."

Mi-young sucked in her breath and realized she already offended someone on her first day.

She started to ponder whether it was wrong of her to get so defensive.

She decided it would be best to play it off as if it was a joke.

"Hey, I was just kidding too! But I can see perfectly fine, thanks for your concern."

She forced a giggle to escape her mouth as she attempted to appease the boy in front of her.

With a curt nod, the boy decided to talk to another student next to him.

Great job, Mi-young. You already made someone hate you. He doesn't even want to talk to you anymore.

Mi-young started to pick at her nails out of boredom as everyone around her was catching up with old friends and talking about how their summers went.

Next time, you need to take things more light-heartedly. Just laugh and then move on.

Just laugh and then move on.

A/N: SORRY IF THIS CHAPTER DIDNT MAKE SENSE. IM TRYING BUT FAILING. *CRINGES* If you were wondering why Mi-young doesn't want to get tan, it's because in Korea's beauty standard it's preferred to have white skin rather than tan skin. Just wanted to clear up any confusion around there. Please let me know how this was! I appreciate any feedback :") love you guys.
