7. All Valley Festival
"Inner peace...focus...balance...these are just some of the skills that you will master when you join Miyagi-Do karate."
Takeshi and Kai were huddled around a laptop, watching this new advert that had just been released promoting Daniel LaRusso's new Dojo, Miyagi-Do.
"I'm Daniel LaRusso, and before I was number one auto dealer in the Valley, I was two-time All Valley under eighteen champion."
A clip was shown of young Daniel LaRusso beating Johnny Lawrence with the crane kick.
"Is that Johnny Lawrence?" Takeshi snickered. "He got absolutely destroyed."
"Now you can learn the secrets of Okinawan karate," Daniel continued in the advert, "true karate. By joining the Miyagi-Do team. Don't be a snake in the grass, be a champion. Tweet us a #TeamMiyagi-Do and all lessons are free. That's right, free. Because at Miyagi-Do, it's not about the money. It's about the karate."
"Well," Kai commented once the advert had finished, "that was something."
"Don't be snake in the grass," Takeshi chuckled, "really subtle Mr LaRusso."
Kai snickered, the Cobras wouldn't take this lightly, they would see this as an attack and strike back, because that was what Cobra Kai was all about. Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.
"Kai-San!" Sensei Yazuko shouted from another room. "Takeshi-San! Come here."
The two boys scrambled up to their feet and made their way towards their Sensei.
"Yes Sensei?" Kai replied, looking at his Sensei.
"We are going to Daniel's home, to join him and his Miyagi-Do team." Sensei told the boys.
"Join him?" Takeshi asked, confused, "what about our training today?"
Sensei smiled. "We will be doing it with Daniel, do not worry, I am still your Sensei and we are still Tiger Claw."
This confirmation was satisfactory for the two boys so without further question, they joined Sensei Yazuko on their trip to the LaRusso home.
"Another chance for you to see Sam." Takeshi smirked, as they were about to knock on the LaRusso's door.
Kai sighed, he wasn't sure how Sam would react after the silent treatment he had been receiving from her at school. It seemed like after the kiss, she just didn't want to talk to him.
Once Daniel had greeted them, they were lead to the back garden where Kai saw Robby and Sam sparring each other. There was sudden jealousy that entered his mind as he watched the two of them laugh after Sam blocked all of Robby's punches.
"We only have two students right now," Daniel told Sensei, "not a lot."
"You can do a lot with two students," Sensei told Daniel, it was the first time Kai and Takeshi had heard their Sensei talk in a language other than Japanese since they landed in America, "look at Kai-San and Takeshi-San for example, they are not my only students but they are my best. These two can be your best."
Just then, two kids arrived in the back garden. All heads turned to face them.
"Good afternoon." Daniel said to them politely.
"We're here for Miyagi-Do karate," one of them said, "commercial said lessons are free?"
"They sure are." Daniel smiled.
"Awesome!" the other one stated.
"I've got a couple cans of paint out front, the fence could use a fresh coat." Daniel told them.
The excited expression on the boys' faces fell immediately.
"Keep an open mind guys," Robby laughed, "it'll all make sense later."
"In order to fully learn Miyagi-Do karate," Daniel told them, "you have to unlearn your misconceptions about what constitutes training."
"I knew this was bullshit," a teenager said, "this was all just a scam to get kids to do your yard work huh?"
"No, no, this is part of the process." Daniel assured them.
That conversation ended abruptly with the two boys leaving to check out Cobra Kai karate, leaving Daniel looking extremely crestfallen.
Sensei Yazuko and Daniel LaRusso then both oversaw the training that happened between the four teenagers.
"Pair up," Daniel told them, "we're going to spar."
Takeshi looked at Robby. "Me and you yeah?"
Robby nodded and Takeshi winked at Sam.
Sam looked at Kai awkwardly and Kai felt the need to express what was on his mind. "Why won't you talk to me? Why have you been avoiding me ever since...ever since...that. What have I done? I like you Sam, a lot."
Kai didn't even realise that he had confessed his feelings to Sam. She looked extremely guilty and slightly hurt.
"I didn't mean to Kai..." she said, "I...I just don't want to fall in love with you because you're going to be leaving soon."
Kai sighed. "I get it...I told myself the same thing. It's fine Sam, don't worry. You only have to see for bit longer."
Feeling extremely guilty, Sam tried to apologise. "No, Kai I didn't mean it like-"
But it was too late, Kai had stormed out the back garden after apologising to both Daniel and Sensei Yazuko and disappeared.
"What happened?" Daniel asked, confused.
"I don't know dad," Sam said sadly, "but I'm going to call it a day too."
She walked back inside, leaving the remaining four people looking extremely confused.
Later, Takeshi found Kai sulking in his room, lying on the bed and staring at the ceiling. "Kai, what's on your mind?"
"Nothing." Kai said plainly, not taking his gaze off the ceiling.
"Is it Sam?" Takeshi pestered.
Kai said nothing.
"Come on Kai, I know what will cheer you up, let's go to Valley Fest!" Takeshi decided.
"What's that?" Kai asked monotonously.
Takeshi replied. "It's a massive festival that's going to have like a tonne of cool stuff to do!"
Kai groaned but eventually, to stop Takeshi's never-ending persuasion, he agreed to go.
Once they had arrived, there was already a band playing and an extraordinary amount of students and people everywhere. There were rides, carnival games, food stalls and a variety of other things. Kai could spot his parents in the background, talking to different people. Of course, they were here, they were very influential in the Valley.
"Let's go on a ride!" Takeshi said excitedly, dragging his friend across to where a spinning ride was, it looked quite intmidating. After paying for a ticket, the two boys sat next to each other and awaited the ride to begin.
"Are you sure this is safe?" Kai asked and Takeshi nodded. Neither of the boys had ever been on a ride like this before and Kai was wary of everything that could potentially go wrong.
The ride was exhilarating and Kai exited the ride panting.
"Holy crap! That was awesome!" Takeshi exclaimed. "Let's go on it again!"
Kai shook his head. "Let's get something to eat instead, I don't think my stomach can handle that again."
Takeshi rolled his eyes and laughed at Kai as the two of them made their way to get some pretzels.
Once it was getting dark, a performance began. There were singers, dancers, comedians and a different variety of people showcasing their skills.
"Alright!" the woman who was presenting it said as the crowd cheered for the previous singer. "Coming up next, do I have a treat for you. Please direct your attention to the LaRusso auto booth for a presentation from Miyagi-Do karate!"
Kai's ears perked up at the mention of the karate group Sam was part of as he and everyone else in the crowd applauded and directed their eyes to the LaRusso booth.
The three of them were standing in front of a backdrop with a red background and a silhouette of a tree on it, there was minimal light so only the outlines of their bodies could be seen. Daniel stood in the centre and Sam and Robby stood on each side of him. As music played, all three of them bowed in sync before performing a synchronised and technical performance, outlining and displaying all the skills that one would learn from Miyagi-Do.
It seemed like they were performing a Kata as they finished with an in-sync Kiai.
"HAI!"
There were cheers once they finished and Kai watched them, especially Sam, with great interest. He would be lying if he said that what Sam had told him didn't hurt but he knew that she was speaking logically. He couldn't get too attached to her otherwise it would just make his departure a lot harder than it needed to be. However, the feelings that he felt towards her was something that he had never experienced before and he wanted to act on them. His head was telling him one thing, his heart was telling him another.
Kai diverted his attention back to the Miyagi-Do presentation and they were now using a Bo staff, Daniel was performing skilled movement with it while Sam and Robby were blocking him. The crowd seemed a bit more interested as there was more physical contact in this routine, once they finished, the crowd was cheering louder.
"Now for the grand finale." Daniel announced.
But as Daniel prepared his grand finale, the sound system and the lights cut, leaving Kai and the crowd confused. Kai was sure it was a technical error but his hypothesis was ruled out when he heard the familiar chant.
"COBRA KAI!"
All the Cobra Kai students, dressed in their Gis, started chanting and running down the crowd, rock music started playing from the speakers as they made their way up onto the stage. The crowd were now hyped up and started cheering for the Cobras and moving towards where they were.
On stage, they started performing a series of offensive and advanced movements in sync, yelling their Kiai very loudly.
"Cobras!" Johnny yelled. "Show them what real karate looks like!"
On stage, Miguel had started fighting everyone else on stage, leaving the crowd invested and immersed in their presentation. Both Miguel and Hawk were attacking their fellow students, leaving them in what Kai assumed to be, immense pain.
Kai rolled his eyes. "How do the audience like cheaters?"
"They just appeal more to the audience, Miyagi-Do is more self-defence whilst Cobra Kai is more attack, like Tiger Claw."
After Aisha Robinson's demonstration of breaking boards blindfolded, which only spurred the audience on more, and Hawk's impressive kick, it was time for the grand finale.
There were several blocks of wood and after Johnny's orders, the Cobras lit it on fire. With one great punch, Johnny punched through and broke all those blocks of wood, whilst it was on fire.
The audience was now ecstatic and Kai hated to see so many people cheer because they had ruin Miyagi-Do's moment, they had ruined Sam's moment.
"I'm going to go show them who's better..." Kai muttered, only to have Takeshi pull him back.
"They're not worth your time." Takeshi warned his friend and Kai resisted the urge.
Even despite their second-place finish in the All Valley, Cobra Kai was now considered by everyone in the Valley as the best Dojo.
Leaving Miyagi-Do behind with their two only students.
