3. Tiger Versus Snake

There was outrage as Hawk slammed his foot into Kai's shoulder. Sensei Yazuko rushed up to Kai and Takeshi went up to Hawk.

"What do you think your playing at?" Takeshi shouted at Hawk whilst shoving him.

"You want to go? Fight me you pussy!" Hawk retorted, making his way towards Takeshi.

"CALM YOURSELF!" the referee yelled, dragging Hawk to the side. "That was illegal contact! You're disqualified!"

"He won't be able to fight in the final." Hawk reasoned. "I'll take his place."

"You won't," the referee said sternly, "you're disqualified."

"Bullshit." Hawk said bitterly before Johnny Lawrence and Miguel Diaz came up to drag him away.

"What the hell do you think your playing at?" Johnny demanded.

Hawk scoffed. "What was I supposed to do? Be a pussy?"

"The match was over!" Johnny yelled. Hawk rolled his eyes and returned to where all the other Cobra Kai members were, they all started criticising Hawk for what he did.

"Kai-San, are you ok?" Sensei Yazuko asked him as he knelt down by the younger boy's side. Kai groaned as he tried to regain himself and get back onto his feet, however, there was now a searing pain in his shoulder. Hopefully, it was just the shock and he would be fit and ready to fight in the final.

"You don't have to fight Kai." Takeshi told his friend, he looked at Kai with a worrying look.

"Don't worry about it guys, I'll be able to fight. I'm going to win it for us." Kai told the other two.

"Are you alright kid?" one of the referees asked him.

Kai nodded. He then turned to see his parents giving him worried looks from the sideline.

He gave them a reassuring smile before he was carried away by Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi to the changing room.

In there, Takeshi managed to find Kai an ice pack and applied it to the boy's painful shoulder.

"Can you move it?" Takeshi asked Kai.

Kai shut his eyes and tried to rotate his shoulder, he winced in pain.

Sensei Yazuko inspected the shoulder. It wasn't severe but it wasn't exactly in fit condition either.

"Let go of the pain," Sensei instructed Kai, "remember what we did in the Dojo? We take deep breaths and we forget everything and only one thing is on our mind, karate."

The older man knew that Kai wished to fight and wouldn't go against the boy's wishes. He knew Kai still had it in him to fight and even with a slightly disadvantaged shoulder, he still was a strong contender to win the All Valley. The shoulder wasn't severe, Kai would still be able to use it but the speed and accuracy of his movements using that shoulder would be slightly slower and less precise than usual.

The Sensei had come to the conclusion that Kai's shoulder had been slightly dislocated and offered to pop the shoulder back into place. It wasn't a risky procedure since it wasn't fully dislocated so Kai agreed. Once it was back in place, Kai felt significantly better but there was still a dull ache from his shoulder.

Once Kai had recovered in the changing room, he asked for both Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi to give him a few moments of solidarity in order for him to prepare for his final match.

Takeshi went up to Kai and offered him a few last words of encouragement before the two boys did their signature handshake that they had adapted and perfected over the years.

Kai removed himself from the changing room and found an empty space in the corridor. He sat himself down and began to take deep breaths, in and out.

He cleared his mind and blocked out the pain of the shoulder and instead focused on his opponent, Miguel Diaz. Kai had watched a couple of matches that Miguel participated in and was aware of the other boy's style. He had the same style as Hawk only he was less aggressive and more of an all-rounded fighter. Kai would've been confident before that he would triumph, but now with his shoulder, he wasn't sure.

"Are you ok?" a timid voice asked from above Kai. Kai reopened his eyes, standing above him was the pretty girl he had almost bumped into earlier.

"I'm fine," Kai said with a weak smile, "I'll be fine to fight in the final."

The girl sat down next to Kai. "I'm Sam by the way, Samantha LaRusso."

"Malachai Hilton," Kai replied, "but I prefer Kai."

"You're a good fighter, where did you learn?" Sam asked Kai curiously.

"Well, I was brought up in Okinawa in Japan with my Sensei and ever since I was around four years old, he's been training me." Kai explained.

"Okinawa? Do you know Mr Miyagi?" Sam asked the boy, "he used to train my dad."

Kai smiled. "I know, Sensei talks about Mr Miyagi sometimes, and I've heard him talk about your dad. The famous Daniel LaRusso."

Sam let out a laugh. "Isn't your fight supposed to begin soon?"

Kai noted them time and nodded, it was time for him to face the crowd and to face Miguel Diaz.

After getting up, he helped Sam up. As the two of them were walking out, they were confronted by an annoyed-looking Miguel Diaz.

"Look Sam, I'm sorry for the other night." Miguel tried to apologise.

"You mean when you hit me?" Sam retorted, arms crossed.

Kai was shocked. "That's messed up..." he commented.

"No one asked for your opinion." Miguel said, glaring at Kai.

"It was an accident, I didn't mean to hit you." Miguel added, trying to defend himself.

"You shouldn't be trying to hit anyone!" Sam replied, looking at Miguel exasperatedly.

Miguel was annoyed. "You bring some dude to the party the other night and expect me to be ok with that? And now you're hanging around him," he gestured towards Kai, "the enemy and expect me to be cool with it?"

"I expect you to be a normal person," Sam countered, "you don't even know Robby and you were trying to start a fight with him. And let's not forget that one of your Cobra Kai members attacked Kai, the so called 'enemy'!"

"Hawk wasn't thinking properly!" Miguel protested. "And you have to strike first! You don't wait for the enemy to attack!"

"I seriously don't think defending your friend is going to help your case." Kai said reasonably to Miguel, giving him a stern and serious look.

"The enemy?" Sam asked, disgusted. "Are you hearing yourself right now Miguel? I don't think I know who you are anymore Miguel..."

Sam turned to Kai and smiled at the boy. "Good luck out there."

She walked away before glaring at Miguel who shouted in anger. "Just you wait! Watch what I do to pretty boy in the final!"

Miguel shot Kai a look before storming off to find his Sensei, Johnny Lawrence. Kai fought the urge to make a spiteful comment back at Miguel but instead went to find Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi.

"Kai-San, remember to focus yourself. Focus on only karate, not the pain." Sensei Yazuko advised the boy.

Kai's brown hair was slicked forward due to the sweat from all his previous matches. The standard of karate in Los Angeles wasn't as high as the standard in Okinawa but there were a few decent competitors here. However, none of them would stand a chance in Japan.

Kai made his way onto the mat and Sensei Yazuko accompanied him. On the mat was Kai, Sensei Yazuko, Miguel and his Sensei, Johnny Lawrence, a former All Valley champion.

"This is it folks," said the announcer, "the moment we've all been waiting for. The final match to determine who will be victor and champion! Will it be Malachai Hilton from the Tiger Claw karate or Miguel Diaz from Cobra Kai karate?"

Cheers erupted from the crowd as Miguel Diaz smirked at the crowd before turning to Kai with a deadly and menacing expression. Kai turned to the crowd and bowed as they cheered for him, in such as short space of time the audience had seen the talent in the kid and couldn't help but love to see him fight. Kai turned to Miguel, met his gaze, and wasn't the least bit intimidated. He merely just nodded at Miguel.

Kai turned to Sensei Yazuko for any last words of advice.

"Remember everything I have taught you," Sensei told Kai, "and focus yourself Kai-San."

Kai nodded at his Sensei and looked at his best friend Takeshi, who gave Kai a thumbs up.

"You got this!" Takeshi said encouragingly. "Don't let those Cobras take your win!"

Kai nodded and stepped towards the centre of the mat. He shot a glance into the audience and met his parents' gazes who looked at him as they cheered for their son. He also met the gaze of Sam who smiled and cheered for the boy. This spurred Kai on, he was going to win this for himself, for Sensei, for Takeshi and for Sam. He wasn't going to let the sneaky Cobras get the best of him.

As the two boys made their way to the centre of the mat, they stopped opposite each other.

"Face me," the referee told them, "and bow."

Both boys bowed.

"Each other," the referee continued, "and bow."

Kai looked at Miguel and bowed at him. Miguel bowed half-heartedly and grudgingly.

"Fighting positions."

Kai inhaled and exhaled. He cleared his mind as he readied himself for the final.

"HAI!" Miguel yelled as he got into his fighting position.

"Ready...and fight!"

The fight began and Miguel charged forward towards Kai, sending two punches and a kick towards the Hilton boy. Blocking them all with ease, Kai tried to strike back but Miguel kept on pushing on the offence, however after waiting with patience, Kai found the right moment to launch his counter attack. He dodged Miguel's punch and spun around, sending a kick right into Miguel's torso before rushing forward and sending multiple punches and a final kick that sent Miguel flying onto his back on the floor.

"Ay!" Kai yelled as he sent his final kick.

"AND STOP!" the referee yelled. "POINT HILTON!"

"Hilton and Tiger Claw get the first point." the announcer said.

Miguel slammed his fist against the mat. The Cobra Kai students behind him all yelled words of encouragement and Hawk roared in fury when Kai had gotten his first point. The pain in his shoulder was slowly going away and only one thing consumed Kai's mind: beating Miguel Diaz.

"HAI!" Miguel yelled again as he got back into his fighting position.

Kai looked at Takeshi and Sensi Yazuko who both nodded approving at him.

"No mercy!" a girl from the Cobra Kai team yelled to Miguel.

"Remember our training!" Johnny Lawrence shouted to his student.

"Positions..." the referee said, "and fight!"

The second round began and this time Kai sprung forward and attacked first, sending a wide variety of punches, chops and kicks in Miguel's way. The boy struggled to defend Kai's strikes and cowered back to the point where he was trapped, if he moved back any further he would be out of bounds. Miguel tried to fight back but Kai blocked him with ease before performing an incredible sweep of Miguel's leg, causing the Diaz to fall back, Kai then proceeded to finish the round with a strike to Miguel's chest.

"POINT!"

"And that's another point for Hilton, it's two-zero."

Miguel roared in anger. "Just you wait!" he threatened Kai.

"What are you gonna do?" Kai sneered. He would normally refrain from talking to his opponent during matches but Miguel was getting on his last nerve.

The third round began and Miguel attacked and Kai blocked all his strikes but then Miguel sent a kick which landed near Kai's injured shoulder, causing the boy to fall on his knees and yell in pain.

"That's what I'm going to do," Miguel yelled at Kai, "and that wasn't everything. No mercy!"

Kai refused to look at anyone else but Miguel, behind him both Sensei Yazuko and Takeshi were worried for the outcome for this fight.

It was two-one in Kai's favour as the fourth round began. Miguel used the same tactic and targetted Kai's shoulder. After succumbing to the mind-numbing pain in his shoulder Kai fell back, but that wasn't it for Miguel. He went out of his way to make sure he was able to land one extra punch directly on Kai's shoulder before the round ended.

"HEY!" Takeshi yelled, rushing forward to Miguel. "YOU CHEAT!"

Miguel smirked and dismissed Takeshi as the crowd booed for Miguel's unsportsmanlike behaviour.

"Time out!" Sensei Yazuko said loudly before making his way towards Kai.

"Kai-San!" the Sensei said to the boy who was groaning on the floor. "Clear your mind! Forget the pain! It is merely an obstacle your mind places on you. Clear your mind and focus!"

Kai nodded and took in his Sensei's wise words. He sat himself up and took a few deep breaths, regaining and recollecting himself.

"It's two all!" the announcer told the crowd. "The next point wins!"

"HAI!" Miguel yelled.

The round began and Kai's mind was clear from the pain, he ignored the pain and striked first. Sending his strongest punches and hits towards Miguel leaving the boy defending frantically, trying to find a space to counter. Miguel finally got into the round and began attacking, targetting Kai's shoulder and landed a solid hit on Kai's shoulder, it seemed like Miguel should've won but Kai grimaced and, ignoring the pain, charged towards an unexpecting Miguel and landed a solid spinning kick to the boy's face, the crowd roared in celebration when Miguel fell to the floor.

"WINNER!" the referee yelled, grabbing Kai's arm and throwing it up into the air. Kai was filled with a multitude of emotions as the crowd cheered for him.

Kai Hilton had won the All Valley Championships.
